Definitely not Kuwait, but Key West make a lot of sense. Thanks!

I'm looking at getting a new credit card. The interest rates are absurd! Anyone have any ideas on how best to find a credit card with reasonable interest rates. Fortunately, I have a high credit score.

Does your primary bank have any deals on their cards?

The bank has one with no interest for a period of time then a high interest rate. I'd rather not have situation where I'm changing cards every year or so chasing better rates.

Honestly, I don't see anything out there for less than 18% APR.

I just make sure to pay off in full. I did use Care Credit to pay for my cataract surgeries, zero interest for a year, but I am never comfortable owing, so I paid it off pretty quickly. Also my surgery was not as pricey as anticipated. But Care Credit is there if I had a sudden vet or dental bill. Credit Unions can be a bit more reasonable with rates, I think.

Paypal credit is nice. It has a high interest rate, but anything you charge over $99, you have 6 months to pay off interest free. Forever. Not just for a limited time. I've been using mine often for 4 years now and haven't paid a penny in interest.

You still have to make a minimum payment every month in the meantime, though.

I just pay in full, but it is always good to have options. I do use PayPal, so that is good to know.

New Q: Who is the Global Internet thing that is out and causing problems? I never heard of it before. TIA

Actually it was CrowdStrike that caused the disruption. CrowdStrike is an industrial level security software company, kind of like Norton or Mcafee but on steroids and meant for the big servers that are the backbone of the global Internet system. CrowdStrike sent out an update but there is a flaw in the update and it caused Microsoft software to crash. That in turn caused the servers to crash or stop communicating.

Yeah, my hosting service got hit and my website is still off line. Which I don't understand since most companies have already recovered!

Thank you Mack, no one on the news seemed to have a clue what was going on and couldn't explain it.

What a mess. My desktop died, but I doubt that I had that software.

It’s not clear what MicroSoft products and systems were impacted but it sounds like maybe MicroSoft Windows and Office were corrupted. Since some are reporting the “blue screen of death” when they try to start their computer certainly sounds like Windows was impacted. Again, CrowdStrike is security software for major servers not for consumer level users so you most likely would not have their software.

So interesting, I wonder if it depended on what Microsoft system you are running. I also noticed that my station that aired Perry Mason couldn't "connect", whatever that means, but all other channels were working fine. The channel was fine the next day so it may have been coincidence but thought it was odd at the time, and the middle of the night, hadn't even heard about the shut down.

Not all server farms use CrowdStrike so if a provider or service is using a non-CrowdStrike protected server then they probably weren’t impacted.

Does anyone know of a brand of rubber bands that don't rot and disintegrate after a few months? It's a very annoying problem.

I don't know, Grooch! But I have another question. Do you think it's reasonable for me to charge a roommate $100 more during May-Sept because the AC more than doubles the electric bill in those months? Especially with the increasingly hot summers. I don't want to charge the people that who are only here in the cooler months. (I try to only rent to traveling health care workers)

It seems fair to me. Does your heating bill go up that much in the winter? Maybe you should just raise your rates?

No, I'm on level pay for gas and it stays a reasonable rate throughout the year.

Can you do that for electricity? Or balance your rates to cover it (ie, total your annual electric bill, divide by 12 and then adjust your rates by that much?)

Now that sounds reasonable. Raise it $35 for everyone and that would be $420 a year. I'll start that with the next tenant/roommate. Thanks!
