No!! We probably had them in the D.C. area but I have no memory of that. From 4-13 in Detroit, no fireflies. But we visited aunt uncle, grandmother in Marion, Indiana and the had them! Loved them. None in Orange County California or in Berkeley. As an adult I went to a conference in the D.C. area and one night we went to the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall area and there were fireflies. (I just got a horrific flash of the wall being removed and some monument to #47 in that area). Anyway I feel fortunate that I have had firefly experiences. Grooch, do you have them?

Looks like Marion, Indiana isn't in their target area now.

No, never saw them in Colorado. Loved seeing them when I was growing up in Pennsylvania.

Yes. As a kid, our house was surrounded by woods on 2 sides. The Fireflies would be near the edge of the woods. We would catch them and put them in glass jars and then let them go the next day. The house I'm in now is not far from my childhood home. My bf has a small semi woodsy area. It's never mowed or raked, so they must begin life in there. And I don't really do much of a fall cleanup. I leave the garden beds alone and clean them up in the spring. You never know what good bugs are sleeping in there. And it lets the birds find seeds too. No wonder my neighbors are blocking the view to our house.

No fireflies in Colorado. I saw them the first time when I was in Philadelphia -- I was in my 40's. I was amazed!!!

Yes, in Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. We called them lightning bugs. I don't remember if there were any fireflies in Louisiana.

I've had them everywhere I've lived. Illinois, Missouri, and a very short time in Indiana. We also called them lightening bugs

I was born in Illinois, lived there from age 1-27. Yes, there were lightning bugs all of those years, and I never knew then that other people had never grown up with lightning bugs. Lightning bugs are classified as the order Hemiptera, meaning true bugs. They are distinguished by the visible triangle in their upper thorax. For some bizarre reason, I continue to know/recall a LOT about entomology, and it is ALL from my childhood in Illinois. Freakish, but I own it. Oh, and also because of them being actual "true bugs" it is perfectly fine to honestly call them lightning bugs. Who knew? I didn't; just either figured it out or made it up right now while making this post. Old age is a hoot, hoping y'all make it there.

We used to catch them in a small field down the street when I was a kid here in Maine. We put a little bit of grass in the jar and poked tiny holes in the lid so they could breathe. They we let them go in the morning. We called them both names. I haven't seen any where I live now. Maybe if I went to a field in the dark, I would see some, but I don't know.

We get a few here in San Antonio but it depends on the summer. Some summers too hot and dry for many if any. Nothing like my grandparents farm in south central Michigan. Their yard was full of them and since way back when I was a kid nit much tv and certainly no internet so we were entertained by the smaller aspects.

New Q: Have you ever been upgraded FREE to a penthouse suite or similar upgrade, in a hotel? I'm away on a mini-trip for a few days. The hotel upgraded me to a penthouse suite today, as I was checking in, when they realized my birthday is this weekend. It includes membership to the lounge with breakfast and happy hour nibblies. They said this room is usually 100 bucks more nightly, than the room I paid for. I feel like a Rock Star. Lol A galpal is catsitting for me at home. She gets a fridge magnet from each place I visit. She insists it's all she wants. But I usually keep beer 🍺 in the fridge for her too.

Yes, in Santa Fe when there was a water leak in our original room and in Hawaii for our honeymoon we were upgraded to an ocean view corner room with a wrap around balcony.
Happy Birthday Mame!

Thanks ladies! When I came back to my room tonight, there was a tray of chocolate covered strawberries, pretzels, almonds, and raspberries and blackberries. Parked my diet outside the door... and had a couple. I will try to only have a few at a time. Oh, and there's a wineglass and a single small bottle of merlot. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but after I get back from the theatre, I'll treat myself to the merlot. (Going to see the musical WAITRESS tomorrow afternoon. I'm in London, Ontario for a couple of days, then heading to Windsor Ontario to see friends for a couple of days.)

Thank you! Just waiting for the cab to the theatre. This is actually the 2nd time I've been upgraded. Years ago when I was covering the Daytime Emmys in New York for a soap magazine I was upgraded to the VIP Floor with all rhe fabulousamenities. It was pretty magical.

Wow that sounds wonderful, Mame! That’s a nice upgrade too, Sugar! Many years ago we used to drive to Nova Scotia for Christmas with family and it turns out that everyone is in a great mood before Christmas and the hotels were pretty quiet. So we got some nice upgrades.

Hi Mame, first of all, a belated Happy Birthday to you! As for upgrades, many moons ago, hubby & I were upgraded to a beautiful hotel room due to our room being assigned to another couple for some reason. We enjoyed all the extras given to us.
