RN Sea, I paid $400.00 for Beth. That was for her and all the work done on her. Oh, and they chipped her. I asked the lady to double the bill so I could donate an equal amount to the shelter. Her spay would have cost a lot somewhere else. Yes, at an animal hospital, the bill for all she had done, not counting the dog herself, would have been at least $500.00 I liked to spay dogs before their first heat. The uterus is small. A dog that had puppies is much more difficult to spay. The uterus is larger and has a greater blood supply. We charged more.

RN My vet recommends spaying between 4 and 6 months depending on the size of the dog. But I got both of my dogs when they were 12 weeks old and they were already spayed. Dogdoc, do you think spaying so early could have been the cause of my Dolly being incontinent at such a young age? She has to take Proin every day since I got her or she pees in her sleep.

RN Naja, I liked to spay cats and dogs between 5 and 6 months of age. Any younger, it could sometimes be hard to find the uterus. I never liked early spaying. I don't know if doing so would cause incontinence. The main reason for early spaying by humane societies is to make sure that the animal gets neutered. They do it before they are adopted. Naja, was Dolly x-rayed to check for bladder stones?

Irvine shelter is municipal, pretty well supported by the city and only taking in strays and animals from the city... But they fund raised .. Two big adoption events a year with many organizations, sponsorship of kennels, of animals, for surgeries, donation boxes, puppy and kitten showers, corporate sponsorships, Subaru was a big one, Science Diet.. In fact it was awkward for them to buy other brands of foods, so on their wish list for donations was "junky" as in cheaper food for animals that needed incentive to eat . I was there before CHURU and other lickables but I imagine those are in high demand on their Amazon and Target wish lists. And back then at least, they would also bring in adoptable animals from other shelters. They participated in an airlift of 41 Chihuahuas to Canada, funded by an actress, because we had so many of them and the Canadian shelters actually needed more small dogs. The work is never endjng. Karuuna, the dogs going through your rescue .. We could see all you put into them behavior wise to make them more adoptable and more likely to stay adopted. Work every fee they paid. They didn't let animals ok save without spay or neuter because people often neglect to get that done. Katniss was EST 11 months turned in as a stray, so she was spayed at that time.

RN Dogdoc, I don't think they did xrays. But aren't bladder stone painful? She's 3 yrs old now and been on Proin almost the whole time, and I haven't seen her in pain. Every time I test if she doesn't need the Proin anymore, she starts peeing in her sleep again by the second or third day without it.

Naja, FWIW, yes, our vet has noted that some female dogs become incontinent after spaying. Typically it is because of lack of estrogen, but not in all cases. It's not been associated with spaying earlier, however, but it's not well understood.

I have always felt that a dog should be able to go through her first heat, after puberty in essence. My girl is now 10 months old and got over her first year about 3 weeks ago. I had a dog I got at Northshore Animal league and they spayed them before adoption so they spayed her at 8 weeks and I thought it traumatized her. she was a very nervous and insecure dog.

RN I feel the same way, Maris RN Had a close call last night with one of the dogs. I let all 5 dogs (2 are mine) out to pee at midnight. I don't let them stay out very long in the middle of the night in case they start barking. Maybe 3 or 4 minutes. So I sat on the deck waiting out the few minutes, and I then called them back. Only 4 showed up! I called and called for the missing one. Nothing! So I ran through the house and out front door, and there was the missing dog across the street 2 houses down running away at full speed. I yelled his name as loud as I could and he stopped in his tracks and came running back. Thank GOD! He had jumped the fence. Dammit, now I have to walk him in the yard with a leash when he's here. Thank goodness he goes home today.

RN tell me about, it, Juju! I wasn't able to fall back asleep for a long time. Today's holidays: International No Diet Day, National Nurses Day, and National Tourist Appreciation Day. OH! And George Clooney's 64th Birthday.

RN, Just got in from feeding my 30 year old horse, and he's bleeding from a rear fetlock and is non weight bearing. Waiting for the vet to get here, and a friend of mine who will try cleaning it up a bit and see what might be going on. With his age, if it's a serious injury.... I'm scared.

Vet just left. Said the laceration, on the inside of his hock, was down to the bone in 2 places. Couldn't be stitched because of the location and the amount of skin gone. Did xrays, didn't look like anything was fractured, but she's sending to the senior vet in the office to look at them also. She did say from the location that she was concerned that there was injury to the joint capsule. Had a choice of doing more extensive testing to see, or taking a wait and see approach given his age, and the expense of additional testing. We decided to wait and see. Forgot to take a photo of his bandage, but will later. I'm so grateful to have a horsey friend who came out immediately when I called, and sat with him till the vet got here, and for the whole vet appt. She'll be coming out twice daily to feed, water, and medicate for the next week. Friday she'll take the existing bandage off and send to the vet. If the swelling goes down, and he starts using his leg, we'll be in the clear. But if no improvement, then a more difficult decision will need to be made.

RN I'm up and I have to go back to work today. I'm dreading it. I'm out of shape from being sick all winter. It rained the past 2 days (landscapers are behind now) and it's mothers day this weekend, so it's going to be very busy this week. Not sure I'm up to it. Ugh!
