Now that that had to kill a ton of turkeys from bird flu it finally dawned on me why we haven't had much chicken for dinner. It is probably expensive since they had to kill so many chickens from the bird flu.

So Dipo, do you only pay for food when you actually go down there to eat? I had assumed it was included in your monthly rate.

It looks like they are trying to provide options for vegans which isn't a bad thing but even they will get tired of black bean burgers daily.

I get the vegan thing, but give the rest of us a meal we can enjoy!

Tonight is home made spaghetti bolognese. I just finished the sauce and it will simmer for the next couple of hours. No canned sauce here, I make my own. Tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, onion, fresh sliced mushrooms, seasonings, and a pound of my home ground beef. Makes for a great cool weather meal and works well now that Mrs Mack is going into work every day of the week. She gets home and all I have to do is fix the pasta so no pressure on her to get home by a certain time.

The way it works is it is included in the rent. They call it Premium Service Package and it includes Dining Services, Housekeeping and Personal Car Service. It is valued at $800 per month. So, when you went a place here it will now be added to your initial monthly rent. It was included when I moved in so there is no additional charge.

BUT ... the Dining Services are provided by Sodexo who gives us $400 dining dollars to spend however we want to thru the month. There is no carry over and I haven't yet figured out what happens if you run out of dining dollars... supposedly you will somehow be billed for additional charges but how that will work hasn't been explained either.

The Daily Special - which is the actual dinner meal of soup, entree with 2 sides, a beverage and dinner roll is $13 and 30 days would be $390.

Now if you want to have a breakfast everyday for $5.50 or $8.50 (the breakfast special) you will run out of dining dollars before the end of the month.

I argued at the start of all this that the dining dollars were not comparable to what we previously had, which was a continental breakfast that included hot cereals, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, etc. and a dinner meal that included soup, SALAD, entree with 2 sides and DESSERT.

Now to add salad and dessert to your dinner meal would cost an additional $6.00.

Did I mention we have ROBOTS

I didn't end up going down for dinner, I was only interested in the Potato Leek Soup so I had some after bingo and it was excellent.

I will say they really do the soups well. Now if we can just get the menu changed so there is a cup or bowl option.

My long time boss of 16 years, who is a year older, and his wife have moved into I guess what you would call a retirement community. They do have a stand alone cottage but virtually everything in the community is provided by the community. According to him one of the attractions was the restaurant that comes as a part of living there. He is not and never was a cook so his wife did it all for years and years so moving into the community took that off her shoulders. They are perfectly happy with their choices and have pretty much nothing more than snacks in their cottage. Iā€™m not ready for that and in fact cook more now than I ever have. We are always collecting new recipes and trying new foods and dishes. We both like Italian food so do a lot of those dishes but also like and cook German, Mexican/Spanish, and French dishes. We still also fix some of the tried and tested mid West dishes from our youth many of which are family recipes handed down for generations.

Mack, that is one of the best parts of community living. I liked cooking but noticed I was just ending up eating microwavable stuff because wen I cooked I had a hard time making it for one so had to eat it for days. I tried freezing leftovers but then I forgot about them, LOL.

Once we get thru the introductory phase of this new group - meaning after I try all their meals and figure out what I like, I will go back to eating in, dining out and cooking a few things.

So far the chefs have not figure out how to make basic Pinto beans and Ham. They keep trying to fancy it up, LOL.

Looking forward to tonight's meal, I had asked for Italian Wedding Soup and this may be their answer.

Don't know about the manicotti but will give it a chance.
