RN Thanks, Seamonkey. She was 15 years older than I am and here she was in the early 70s. She was a man magnet. Men flocked around her. She was so pretty.

RN, oh no, Naja... I'm sorry for your loss, and that you weren't made aware that she was ill. That makes the loss so much more difficult. My heart goes out to you.

RN So sorry to hear of the loss of cousin. Prayers for you and the family.

RN just got our Christmas tree up. We use an artificial tree that is easy to do. Mrs Mack will decorate it later today and tomorrow. Our typical outside decorations aren’t going to happen this year due to my concussion. We’ll get something done outside but just enough we don’t look like grinches. Basically I’m doing good but still not there with my balance and stamina. I expect it will be at least a week or two before I’m 100%. I self-imposed not driving right now so Mrs Mack will have to pick up those chores, etc.

RN, that’s such sad news, Naja.

Glad you’re doing better, Mack. Concussions are rough.

RN Thanks everyone. I am sure going to miss her

RN So glad to hear you're improving, Mack :-)

RN On a lighter note, these 5 snow babies are very wet after playing in the snow all day. I gave them a towel down, but now they have to wait in the kitchen until they dry a little more.

Back row: Sky, Patsy, Dolly
Front row: Rylee and Willow

All girls! The only boy went home yesterday.

RN, you sure know how to get your dogs in a row, Naja. You are a great leader of the pack.

I have friends who have one tiny Yorkie and also a male cat who has not stepped up to become leader of the pack, and the humans have not the least freaking idea that dogs need a pack leader, so this tiny doggie must assume the role of pack leader and run the entire family and household. It is entirely chaos at all times, although she runs the place as best as one tiny dog can do.

RN Juju, that tiny dog in my photo thinks she is the boss here. LOL But luckily, she still knows I outrank here. :-)

RN I have a room inquiry from a Mom who wants her 19 yr old son to have a room here for 13 weeks. My first reaction was "no way" until I read more. He's going to fireman's training school in my town. And, I looked up his Mom, and she's a special education teacher in Kansas. These sound like good people so far. We'll see if she follows up.

RN Juju, that pack leader thing has been debunked for a long time now. What the animals need is training, not a pack leader.

If the 19 year old does stay, you’ll need to have very clear rules about what you expect.

RN, Many 19 year olds are very nice and responsible. No guarantees, of course, but I’ve known some good ones. :-)

Thanks for the link, Karuuna. I especially liked the last parargraph:

quote:

Real leadership instead of pack leadership
Real leadership and "being a pack leader" are two different things.

Do we need to provide leadership and guidance for our dogs? Of course. Should we teach and reward our dogs for making the right choices as much as possible? Absolutely! Real leadership means teaching, guiding, and helping dogs through positive, supportive, and force-free methods.

Do we need to force dogs to be submissive and view us as a dominant figure in their lives? No. In fact, techniques designed to physically dominate or intimidate our companion dogs contributes to behavioral problems. What's more, dogs know we are not dogs!

If we want to be true leaders, for the good of our dogs and our lives with them, we must lead without violence, domination, or intimidation.

If I should ever slip again and type pack leader, rest assured this paragraph is what I meant. It strikes me Naja is an expert at this technique.

I have no qualifications as a dog trainer, and hated dogs for my first 25 years. 50 years later I have shifted to the position that humans don't deserve to have dogs, but are lucky if they can be with even one.

RN, Naja, I bet that littlest dog is kinda happy that you are giving her a break from having to be in charge.

As for the 19 year old, if he is okay with the dogs, and has a nearby mother for support, I also think he could be a good fit. You are NOT his mother, but you are also a person who would not harm him and are somebody he could benefit from knowing.

RN The 19 yo's Mom actually followed up! That's more than 99% of inquiries do! We'll be talking on the phone during the week. I'll report back after/if that happens.

You are welcome, Juju, and forgive me if I slip and don't remember that we already had this conversation. I often operate in a kind of brain fog, and my memory has been eviscerated by the cancer meds. So if you don't remember and mistakenly use "pack leader" again, please forgive me if I gently remind that caring dog lovers no longer use that terminology, lest people misunderstand what it means.

RN, It’s interesting how theories and methodology evolves. I rather apprehensively wonder at times what we are doing now that we think is right but will later be found to be wrong.

RN I guess understand what was wrong with JuJu's statement. I didn't take it in the literal since. When I was walking with our rescue group, and we got a new volunteer, we often said welcome to the "pack".

Lol Jimmer, I often spout something out that has always been in my vocabulary/wheelhouse, and then look at Rae and say is that still ok to say?

Nothing wrong with calling a group of dogs a "pack". It's just a myth to think that "pack leader" is a real concept, either in the wild, or with your pups. :-) the problem is that this terminology came along with Cesar Milan, who has been widely discredited for his "training" techniques.

RN I have been stewing with anger for a couple hours because when I came home from the grocery store, someone had scooped up the wet dirt and wet leaves from along the curb and put them in a big pile at the end of my driveway next to the mailbox.

I couldn't fathom who would do this. So I finally decided to go scour the security cam footage and I found the guilty party. I'll be back shortly with the video of who did it.
