RN, wow, that sort of explains it, but I would be careful how you return the money.

AND I wouldn't return it until she actually talks with you. This sort of sounds like one of those situations where you return the money and they somehow change the amount on the check. OR if you sent a check then they have your account number.

So proceed with caution.

RN The weird part is they haven't asked for any money back yet. And if the friend still had my contact info, then the lost phone excuse is stupid!

RN I sent the message directly to the number I have for Connie, and not the friend. Surely she kept her old number with her new phone.

"Hi Connie! Please get in contact with me so we can arrange for me to send your deposit back to you."

ETA: I would use Zelle. That's how she paid me as well.
https://www.zellepay.com/

eta again: Zelle is service your own bank offers to you. The only info the person sending you money needs is your email address associated with it.

RN, I wouldn't send the deposit back. You took the unit off the market, expecting that it was rented. You are entitled to that deposit.

Let alone the concerns I have about this whole deal. I'm wondering if she'll come back and say she can't take Zelle, which would be another red flag.

Just wash your hands of it, and move on.

RN Well, for sure that's the last contact I am going to initiate. If she contacts me and will take the deposit back with Zelle, I'll give it to her. If I hear nothing, I'll keep it all, and then wash my hands of it.

I just put it back on the market this morning.

RN Only 11 more months of this lunacy until I get DH's SS. I remember when I was saying only 2 and a half years left, so it's going by fast.

Why are you giving the deposit back? You could have rented the room to somebody else. But you didn't.

The money is yours. Fair and square.

Hotels don't give you the deposit back if you don't show up.

And, she lost her phone is bs. Anyone who loses one buys a new one within a few days.

Keep the money and ignore/ block the "friend".

RN See the giant weed tree behind my shed? I just squeezed behind there and used my chainsaw to cut it at the base. It's going to be a pleasure watching it slowly wilt and die.

It's actually growing all mangled in the fence, but it's the back neighbor's fence and I'm sick of waiting for them to take care of it, so I took the first step.

I wouldn't return the deposit. Didn't you turn down a renter you really wanted in favor of her and her friend?

Glad you got the deck situation handled.

I would probably wasn't to keep that weed for the privacy it affords.

I would say you likely do not owe any refunds to anybody on the occupancy contract you had with the person who failed to appear. Certainly do not pay out any money if you cannot match it up with the person who sent it to you.

I guess we don't need to worry too much about you, Naja. Got your chainsaw and your dog pack. You are not a woman to be messed with.

RN HAHAHA, that is so funny Mack!

RN I haven't gotten a response back after offering the deposit back yesterday. I think a normal person would jump to get that amount back.

RN, so funny Mack!

Naja, I know you looked her up online, but I do wonder if it was someone spoofing her that contacted you. It happens.

RN, Yolanda is a national treasure of a paying renter. Look how thrilled she is to be loved on by all those big dogs.

Wait, you have two Teddys?

RN we “survived” the 4th of July without incident. Relatively speaking it was quiet in the neighborhood with probably half the typical amount of fireworks. Fireworks are legal in Texas except where banned or limited by local jurisdictions. In our case the city of San Antonio bans them but Bexar County that surrounds San Antonio does not. Means the fireworks booth set up just outside the city limits and, of course, don’t ask for ID to show a buyer lives in the county. We’re about three blocks outside the city so legal though our HOA bans them but able to enforce the ban. County sheriff is not going to chase down HOA violators.

RN Juju, the big doodle is Teddy, the smaller one is Waffles. And yes, Yolanda (aka MsSonic) is a treasure!

I had a rough night. Fireworks are legal here, and Waffles is so scared of them she spent the night behind the couch and having diarrhea. And since she refused to go out, it happened inside the house. It was about 2:30 AM before they fireworks calmed enough for me to get her to go outside.

My dogs aren't afraid at all, and Teddy was only a little afraid. He would go outside to potty, but he'd run back in as fast as he could. I've had 6 dogs as an adult, none have ever been afraid of fireworks.

Naja, my dog is terrified of those noises, altho oddly enough he wasn't when he was younger. I did give him trazodone, and that helped, but he did still hunker down in the master bath with his head in the corner. Poor thing. Luckily the trazodone eventually knocked him out.

Our city bans them but no real enforcement and we are surrounded by cities that allow safe and sane. However there are plenty of unsafe and insane fireworks going off. And it has been sporadic for weeks and yesterday was non-stop and last I heard was at 2:20am, kind of distant.

My friend lives in an enclave surrounded by commercial development. She has a front yard on a main street, and a BIG (dry) pasture.

She had to call police four times last night to get people off her property who were setting illegal fireworks. She'd go out nicely and ask them to leave and they'd refuse every time even tho no trespassing & private property signs are posted.

They could have easily set her pasture, and thereby her house... on fire. People are stupid.

There was a fire at a park (with brush) just last week down river and There were fireworks down that way. Abd California has plenty of brushfires going.

Stupid and selfish.
