It’s been a stifling weekend as a major heat wave engulfs California – so hot, in fact, that the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office had to shut down its Doppler radar on Mount Umunhum for several hours due to technical issues.

It's hot, but not excessively hot. Temps starting to come down a bit. Was supposed to be cloudy but it has been full sunshine all morning, not much of a breeze and temps going up to 93.

Evacuations on Rhodes was the first thing Bigdog told me when I got up this morning. We have been there a few times, and I know exactly where the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, was supposed to have stood. I don't think of it as a heavily wooded place, and the coastal villages and resorts are indeed where the tourists and service industry workers are concentrated. Not good at all for fires to be in that area.

Juju, I saw a resident interviewed this morning. He said that the island has pine trees so there was nothing that could stop it.
