Here, people target small businesses run by people whose second language is English and threaten to have them shut down. They demand payment.
One scheme had "inspectors" with official looking forms. I heard this one at a meeting with the police and fire departments .

that could have been true as we do have a lot of immigrants, but in this case it was not, it was a 50 year old born in the USA male.
I just got stuck on google play cards. 10K has to be a lot because I think google play cards top out at $100 - to 100 of them.
inspectors that want to get paid off, I could fall for. I know there is enough of that kind of stuff in lots of places. But not if they wanted to be paid off in google play cards.

So I was cleaning out my junk email this morning....I had a couple of hundred.....and noticed a new series I hadn’t seen before. I had maybe six to eight notifications from Qatar Airlines about an issue with the payment for my upcoming flight. Problem is I have no flights planned and have never flown on Qatar so they don’t have a profile on file from me. I also noticed the supposed ticket information had different reservation reference numbers. Rolling my curser over the link provided to help solve the problem actually showed an RU extension which means a Russian email address. Naturally I deleted them all.

Oh, and donate your hair to charity scams, er hair donation fake charities, are scams. Well, maybe not really bad bad scams like running a fake University that cheats desperate people of their life savings. More like donating something that was of no intrinsic value to you and mostly of no value at all to somebody who knew how to market it for profit while leaving you with a feeling that you had done a realllly huge good deed at personal sacrifice.
But, it would be sort of interesting if Joe's famous hair did get donated somewhere and what actually happened to it. If I were the donee, I would probably put it up for sale on eBay, maybe a huge price for the whole thing, or lots of small lots, and tout that the proceeds were going to charity.
Um, everybody here knows Juju2bigdog is permanently banned from the TVCH hair thread, right?

Obviously I would never do what it says to do, but its freaky... Just wondering if anyone else has got something like this? Can I post it?

Chewy, my 83 year old friend, Lorna, but the exact same email awhile back.I
She was very shaken and showed me the email, convinced that She would have to stop going online.
As Kar said, I was able to convince her that it was a scam.
She took her laptop to be checked.
The scary thing is that there is a very real random thing going on and those have been very real threats to take down hospitals, cities and more. It was covered in 60 Minutes.

But I think opportunists are piggybacking into this and sending out these e-mails.

I don't remember how long but this scam has been around for awhile. As I recall it hit pretty hard and frequently a couple of years ago and then kind of faded. Sounds like it's back again at least in some limited form. It is purely a scam. Having somebody's email address is absolutely no indication that the hacker has been able to get into your or anybody else's computer. This is different than the attacks where indeed the hackers have been able to find the "backdoor" into a computer system and hold the system hostage until they got paid. While that is true and did happen apparently computer security efforts have significantly reduced the number of successful hacks of that kind. The only times I know of where that has happened to an individual on their personal PC is when they've fallen for scams like the "Microsoft security" scam. In that one they "voluntarily" give over control to a remote user who then locks up the computer unless a ransom fee is paid.

Yeah I’ve been getting variations of those for a while now. Very corny and in bad English. I was like “yeah right ..... good luck with that” 
It’s a shame that people get scared and scammed by these things.

Like I said though'. I don't even have a web cam..
And, pretty sure my life would be quite boring to invade on..
Lot of dog stuff and yard work...I am 'far' from being Rich so they would probably be deeply disappointed..
But still very unnerving to get somthing like that. Thanks guys.

Chewy, if you can still have the e-mail, and you can find a setting to turn on full headers, I bet you will find something in there which will show you that the e-mail was not sent from your e-mail address, and your address is spoofed.

My friend knew it wasn't true. She has a laptop but no Wi-Fi so the laptop is only used while sitting on a desk. But she was pretty upset.
The randomized thing is real, according to the 60 minutes report and companies have paid large sums to get control back.
But this email.. Is just phishing.

So we go over to visit friends in Georgia and the husband tells us about all these robo-calls he is getting about his Social Security account being frozen. We hadn’t gotten any of them at the time. Interestingly that didn’t last and now my wife and I have gotten maybe six to eight calls each. I suspect they are trying to get your SSN.

I've been getting those Social Security calls as well. They leave messages on my answering machine that say there is illegal or suspect activity on my number and it will be frozen. They act like it's a credit card. Of course, I'm supposed to call back. Don't do it. They'll probably ask for you to confirm your number and then they've got ya!
