Here's one I enjoyed. "The Remains (2016)" It's has that never fail plot of a sad widower and his children moving into a haunted house, but the father doesn't believe the children that it's haunted until things get far out of control. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3894312/reference

I normally don't like modern werewolf movies ( totally adore the original "The Wolf Man 1941" with Lon Chaney) but this one was ok. Not great, just ok. "Howl (2016)" This one stars that young Simon Baker lookalike, Ed Speleers, best known from Downton Abbey. The movie is about a passenger train that breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Then the werewolf enters the story.... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2393827/reference

I watched such a good ghost story last night! "Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)" It's about a recently widowed woman and her 2 daughters trying to make ends meet in 1967 LA. The mother tries to make a living in her home as a "fortune teller". Her daughters help with the act. All things are going ok until one of her daughters suggests including a Ouija board as part of the act. Things get very scary! The tagline is "When you talk to the other side, you never know who will be listening." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4361050/reference One more thing, this one is safe for tweens that like scary movies.

Here are 2 more I have recently watched. "Edgar Allan Poe's Lighthouse Keeper (2016)" A creepy old lighthouse keeper and his recently marooned guest must keep a light burning at all times to keep away the scary things in the dark. This one has a really good story line (heck, it's Poe), and I really enjoyed it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3181898/reference ------------------------------- Now this one was so slow, and I mean SO SLOW, it was hard to stay awake for the end. "Shelley (2016)" It's about a couple living off the grid somewhere in Sweden. They hire a very young Romanian woman as a live in maid. After getting to know her awhile, they ask the maid to be the surrogate for their baby. As the pregnancy progresses, things start taking a turn to the dark side. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5013688/reference It's a good story, but the utter slowness was frustrating.

I have some older scary movies set to watch that I have never even heard of. When I get to them, I'll post what I thought. Suspiria (1977) Wait Until Dark (1967) Don't Look Now (1973) The Innocents (1961) Near Dark (1987)

BTW, I want to explain why I say "scary" movies instead of horror movies. It's just because I feel sometimes scary movies don't have "horror" in them.

That's an interesting distinction.

I watched another dud the other day "Let's Be Evil (2016)" I really didn't quite understand it, but I'll try to describe it. It's about a group of grade school age gifted children being supervised by a few teenagers at a very cold facility. They all wear augmented reality glasses and live within them. At some point the children start terrorizing the teen supervisors. The film actually got decent marks IMDB, but I cannot fathom how or why. I thought it was horrible. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3655682/reference

On my oldie list above I finally got to one of them. "Wait Until Dark (1967) " It stars Audrey Hepburn, Richard Crenna, and Alan Arkin. It's about some criminal men seeking a doll full of heroin that a blind Audrey Hepburn seems to unknowingly possess. It was in the horror/thriller category, but I would just call it a thriller. But it was very enjoyable. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062467/reference

I saw that last year. I can't remember if it was SFJF or Uncle Ricky that recommended it, but it was a good one.

Naja - Just finished watching Ouija - Origin of Evil, and you were right, it was an excellent ghost story. I think horror movies work especially well as period pieces and this one definitely did not disappoint.

Scout, I actually made a point to say it was a good ghost story since I remembered your post that ghost stories are your favorite. They are my favorite, too! eta: I'm also trying to include whether they are slow paced since Lakecat and Mr. Lakecat don't like those.

I was about 5 minutes into one of the older movies I had listed above, Don't Look Now (1973) , and I realized I had seen it already some time in the 90s. It's part of the "little person in a red raincoat" horror film trend. It's a creepy and exciting movie that stars Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland as parents grieving the death of their young daughter....But is she really dead? hmmmm http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069995/reference

Thanks, Naja - I appreciate you putting the descriptions (especially ghost story) and your views of the movie. I always like the ones you recommend. I thought Henry Thomas was really amazing as the priest.

I watched another one of the oldies on my list. I really enjoyed it. "The Innocents (1961)" It stars Deborah Kerr as a woman who takes the job as a governess for two strange children who have lost their parents, and their Uncle doesn't want any part of raising them except to finance it. There seems to be something evil taking over the children, and the new governess tries to save them from it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055018/reference I can't really guess when it takes place, but they are very rich but don't have electricity in the mansion, so it must be pretty long ago.

Here is one everybody should just skip. It's horrible. "Dead Story (2017)" It's about a young couple that moves into a country home and they end up terrorized by an exact clone of the creepy girl that crawls out of TVs in The Ring movies. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4282872/reference Skip it. Bad.

I can't remeber if I posted about this movie, but it's one of my favorite old scary movies. And, it's a ghost story. "The Uninvited (1944)" It's about a brother (Ray Milland) and sister (Ruth Hussey) that move into a seaside mansion. The brother starts to fall for the daughter of the man who sold them the mansion, but the deep dark secrets of the mansion's past haunt them all. It's so darn good. Look for it in your listings. AMC and TCM play it now and then. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037415/reference BTW, there is also a newer movie from 2009 with same name, and that one is good, too! It's not a remake at all. It's a whole different story.

Since I mentioned "The Uninvited (2009)", I thought I would give more info. It's really good! It's about a teenage girl who returns home from a stint at mental hospital after her mother died in fire in their boathouse. But when she returns home, her dad has a new girlfriend that seems to be plotting against her and her her older sister. Things are not at all as they seem! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0815245/reference

I loved the Uninvited from 1944! As a kid this would be on tv and me and my sisters would scare ourselves silly after watching it!

Where do you find all of your movies Naja? I was looking through Amazon Prime and Netflix for a teen friendly "scary" movie and couldn't find anything that looked appealing. We don't like slasher horror. I'm constantly disappointed with Netflix's movie selection. They are good for streaming TV shows and series shows.

Naja, The Innocents is one of my all time favorites. I recommended it several months ago. I haven't seen it in a long time. Ok ,I got the invitation and uninvited mixed up. Are both of these available on Netflix?
