I rewatched the finale of season one, to review what Jenner said now that we have a bit more info. In Jenner's blog (episode 5, Day 4 after Rick wakes up and before our gang get to the CDC) he says "Day 194 since Wildfire was declared, 63 days since the disease abruptly went global, there's no clinical progress to report." He messes up doing an experiment on a sample, and that causes the first decontamination event that destroys all his useful samples. He describes the other samples as "useless, necrotic dead flesh," not fresh like the good one he was working on. They arrive on Day 5 after Rick wakes up. Jenner says they can't come in without blood tests, but when Rick asks Jenner, "how's the blood?" Jenner says "no surprises" instead of saying anything like "all clear" or "all negative." So Jenner shows them an MRI of the "extraordinary" brain of his wife. She was bitten and infected and volunteered to have them record the process. In the First Event "it invades the brain like meningitis, the adrenal glands hemorrhage, the brain goes into shutdown, then the major organs. Then death." Then "the Second Event, the resurrection times vary widely, we've had it reported as happening in as little as three minutes, the longest we heard of was eight hours." Lori: "it restarts the brain?" Jenner: "No, the brain stem, basically it gets them up and moving," Glen: "but they're not alive." Jenner: "you tell me." "The frontal cortex, the neocortex, that doesn't come back, the you part. Just a shell driven by mindless instinct." "It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal." "There may be some [other facilities]. Everything went down... I've been in the dark for almost a month." Later, he says the last people he heard from were the French, and they thought they were near a cure, but they also ran out of power (he presumes). The thing Jenner whispers to Rick before they leave the CDC is about 20 words long, so could have been quite a lot of info, like "you're all infected by the virus, when you die you'll turn into zombies unless someone shoots you in the head," for instance . So... the "in the black for almost a month" doesn't quite jive with Shane recently saying that the stories in the news started only a couple of weeks before he left Rick for dead, but are pretty close. (Jenner would have gone black about 24 days before Rick woke up, Shane was talking about 20 days, if we say Rick was alone and in a coma for no more than six days.) I guess we'd have to assume Jenner was being more accurate than Shane, and actually the stories on the news had been going on three or four weeks before he left Rick for dead and for some reason it was about that time the CDC lost power (maybe because it was in a city, and resources were used up more quickly than out in the country where Shane and Rick were??). Back to what Jenner said in his blog, it was 194 days since Wildfire was declared, so whatever Wildfire was, it happened just over six months before Rick woke up. I had kind of assumed it was when some sort of state of emergency was declared, relating to the release of some contagion that started all this, but as Jenner says that the disease could be from a number of different things ("microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal") I guess it can't be a release from a lab unless the CDC were kept in the quiet about it. Then "63 days since the disease abruptly went global" means that it took just two months from whatever event seemed to start it to it going global, and another month before it made a big impact on society. It's interesting that he describes the death of the patient and the reawakening as two seperate events. It supports the theory that the virus/disease that makes them die could be different from what makes them wake up again as zombies. Anyway... finale tomorrow and I can't wait!

""It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal." " What I took from that remark was that they simply don't have a clue as to what's causing it. Unless they actually isolated the alleged pathogen and identified what type of organism it was, they're just assuming that it's "microbial, viral, parasitic, or fungal." "Later, he says the last people he heard from were the French, and they thought they were near a cure, but they also ran out of power (he presumes). " I think if the French were close to a cure, they must have known what kind of pathogen it was and they would've passed that information along to Jenner when they said they were getting close to a cure. The cure for a fungal infection is very different than that of a bacteria and that is different than the cure for a parasite....so they had to know what type of pathogen it was before they could "cure" it) Of course, there simply no such thing as a "cure" for any virus (polio, the common cold, HIV, herpes), although with viruses, it's sometimes possible to develop a vaccine against it. For all they know, it could be supernatural in origin. They're just assuming it's some kind of contagious "germ" because that's the only thing that makes sense to them....but it's still just an assumption. For all they know, Satan got loose and decided to stir up some shit!

The lady who stayed behind with Jenner to be blown up said something like "or God's wrath" (as a cause) and Jenner said "there is that!" I didn't understand the "could be..." remark because they showed Jenner looking at slides of the disease taking over the cells, where you could see the stringing virusy thing engulfing the blood cells. I'd have thought from just that they'd be able to tell what it was, but I don't know, I might have watched too many movies ;).

When I think about it, I guess I don't really mind if The Walking Dead writers base their zombie apocalypse on a germ...as long as they don't go in the direction of a bunch of scientists in a secret bunker looking for a cure. I, for one, was very happy when the CDC was destroyed because it left the survivors on their own. They had to stop lounging around in the CDC underground bunker and go back out into what's left of the world and either learn to cope with it or die. I have always liked the theme of the Romero films - zombies just happen and there's nothing anyone can do about it but learn how to survive and adapt while their families and neighbors are trying to eat them.

When the helicopter appeared at the beginning of this week's show I thought "ah oh, Sanfran's not going to like it!" I'm also glad they didn't go that way. Lots to say but will wait a while!

"I'm avoiding spoilers on the hooded one with the 2 armless zombies in tow - now I can't wait til fall to find out who he/she is!" Then DON'T watch tonight's The Talking Dead! At the end when Andrea was saved by the hooded figure with two armless "walker pets" on leashes (TOTALLY creepy, by the way), I was guessing it might've been Merle who had somehow learned how to control the walkers and set himself up as some kind of crazy cult leader! (The Talking Dead spoiled the identity of that character!) "When the helicopter appeared at the beginning of this week's show I thought "ah oh, Sanfran's not going to like it!"" I didn't! However, it was pointed out on The Talking Dead that in season one Rick also saw a helicopter.....so I'm thinking that the helicopter isn't going to spoil my fun right away. And then at the very end, I thought they revealed some kind of government facility near Rick & Company's camp and I got worried again....but I learned on the Talking Dead that it was actually just a prison. Hmmmm, a prison full of convict walkers might be a lot of fun! Definitely DON'T drop the soap! All in all an excellent episode! I was worried that they weren't going to let us know how Andrea made out after running into the woods before the episode ended, but thankfully, they did. Dang....it's gonna be a loooooong wait until fall! Did anyone see the Mad Men promo during Walking Dead? They flashed "Zombies are Back!" and then showed Roger, Betty, and Don in different scenes looking totally hungover as they were either just waking up or stumbling into the office to go to work. It was hilarious!

i was quite surprised that the talking dead spoiled next season. I decided to watch for the FIRST time since its the finale/ and then they go and not only ruin who the figure in the hood is, they show the actress. also, i was guessing what that building was. they spoiled it was a prison. I thought this final episode was risky. we all saw the decline of "V" when they decided to change the personalities of soem fo the main characters. At this point, i think Rick has ZERO credibility and only idiots would follow him now. the hooded figure intrieged me but seriously, the indentical twin walkers creeped me out. now why wouldnt they bite her?? missing arms would make them safer, but they still had teeth.

I wasn't sure if the helicopter was the same one as in the very early episodes, and they were illustrating a kind of chaos theory type thing, where one small event weeks earlier caused those walkers to stream out of the city, and that eventually ended up causing such damage to our group, OR if it was a recent helicopter. Either way, I like it as a nice teaser that there might be organised life out there, or it might have just been some rich guy with a private helicopter on a sort of joy ride. And I'm glad they didn't resolve it. I recognised the place as a prison (or at least guessed it was) because I'm watching Prison Break on Netflix at the moment, and their prison looked just like that! (It's also very confusing seeing unlikeable Lori as the very likeable Sara Tancredi!) Well if they want something safe and walled in, you can't ask for more than a prison. The thing is, who's inside? Nice folk who've gathered there for safety or is it full of criminals? And with that big fence it looked like quite a bad person's prison too, not a cheated-on-their-taxes type prison! I guess the hooded woman is based there. I noticed a Mad Men trailer playing Walking Dead music, but my fingers were too quick on fast forward to see what was going on there! I really sympathised with Rick. He's tried to find the line between being a good guy and protecting them all this time, he's listened to their opinions and done things that were probably against his better judgement to help others, all the while finding out his wife cheated on him with his best friend and is pregnant with what could be his baby. And whenever anything goes wrong he gets the blame, and whenever anything goes right they're still critical. I'd have snapped long ago! And Lori practically told him to kill Shane and when he does she just looks like she's disgusted with him! Poor guy. I think the armless walkers would have little aim. If someone fell over and they dropped on them there'd be trouble, but if they were following you it would be hard to get a bite without limbs to pull the victim closer, a bit like bobbing an apple. Pretty disgusting though. And to complete my habit of using this thread for my own personal notes, here's what happened this episode. (If this thread gets deleted before next season I'll be in trouble!) Day 22 S2E12 Shane turns into a walker and Carl shoots him in the brain. S2E13 Walkers hear Carl's shot and herd overrun the farm, Rick sets the barn on fire, Jimmy and Patricia are killed trying to get away. Rest of the group escape. Day 23 They meet on the highway except for Andrea who runs through the woods. Rick reveals "we're all infected, at the CDC Jenner told me whatever it is, we all carry it." Andrea is saved in the woods by a hooded woman with two chained armless walkers. The rest head East, stop for the night, Rick tells them it's not a democracy any more. Camera pulls out and reveals a prison complex nearby.

later on i was thinking about the hooded character and her 'pets'. I suddenly thought OMG it would have been great if Andrea got Shane zombie as HER pet. She has NO idea how he died. Can you imagine everyone's faces when she finally gets back together with them and she has Shane in chains ??? but alas, my sister popped my brilliant plotline bubble by pointing out shane was given a headshot ..... rats. would have been a great scene i dont like the rick character. He has gotten a certain amount of blame for things going wrong when its his POOR leadership, POOR decisionmaking ability that gets them in the situation to start with. A good example is taking that enemy into camp. what the HECK was he thinking? it all went pearshaped after that

Lol, Whrlwnd, thank you!! I think it's going to be very difficult to be completely spoiler free before season three, the new storylines seem to have exited the people who read the comic books so much the talk is everywhere online this morning.

If anyone wants to know why the hooded woman has the chained up zombies, here's a little bit of the comic book that explains it. Clever. Obviously SPOILERS: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/custom/LESLEY/Walking_Dead_Full_Story.jpg

The thing that bothered me most about the finale - your running for your life from the zombies and your climbing to the loft in the barn and YOUR STILL WEARING THAT OVERSIZED COWBOY HAT!!! seriously? I just want to flick that off his silly little head even when he tripped and fell from the zombie in the swamp, he was STILL wearing that stupid extra large hat- get real! Okay, just nit picking and bringing out my critic mean side-

In addition to the kid wearing an oversized hat, here's what bothered me throughout the entire second season: I know Herschel's farm is a FARM, and there's a lot of "front yard" to park all the vehicles. But, dear God, knowing they might be overrun by a zombie horde at any moment, did it never occur to any of them that maybe they should park their cars and trucks as close to the house as possible? (Last week they knew enough to board up all the windows of the house in preparation for being over-run, but they still parked every car roughly 1/8th mile away from the house. And so they all had to fight their way to their respective vehicles when they were trying to leave.) There. Now I've vented.

my issue is all the noise. they know noise attracts the walkers, so instead of quietly walking to their cars, they yell, scream, shoot, drive around the house in circles thus attracting every walker within hearing distance To the house. it would have been worth it to put a box of ammo in the barn, all the shots probably would have pulled all the walkers back towards the barn due to the noise. BUT its a tv show, lets empty brains and keep watchin LOL

AMC will marathon all 19 episodes of The Walking Dead‘s first two seasons the weekend of July 8, leading up to a special edition of Talking Dead and a never-seen-before black-and-white conversion of the series pilot. The Dead-athon kicks off Saturday, July 8 at 11:30am EST, running to 1 am that night. The action picks back up Sunday at 11:30 am, leading into the 9 o’clock Talking Dead special and then the 10 pm showing of the B&W series opener. The marathon event will also be laden with behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews, and maybe a peek or two at Season 3, premiering this fall. http://tvline.com/2012/05/31/walking-dead-marathon-emma-stone-icarly/ I'd love to see the behind the scenes stuff but I don't think I will sit through two seasons worth of shows for it. The special Talking Dead I will tape though.

Thanks for the heads up, Kitt. I'm looking forward to reviving my addiction. Lol...I have a confession to share ...I became so addicted during season 2 that when it ended I decided to begin collecting the graphic novels (to satisfy my withdrawals). I bought the first compendium, which includes the first 48 issues...over 1000 pages! I've only read the very first issue, and the show was very accurate to that first issue. I don't plan on reading anymore (I don't want to ruin the show for myself). I just like knowing I have them.
