Naja, I stayed up for the whole darned thing too...great racing when they got an opportunity...weirdest Daytona 500 race ever though...that fire was scary. I kept thinking about the family that was on The Amazing Race a couple of years ago whose husband was killed in a crash where he was driving a safety vehicle. I'm sure it brought back nightmares to them. So glad everybody is safe. I foresee new safety rules for when the cars are trying to catch up and going around safety vehicles.

I don't know if any rule change will help with a situation like that. Something broke on JPMs car and that's why he hit the safety truck. He was giving them a wide birth before then. That was the most bizarre race ever! I'm just happy no one was hurt! ;)

I don't know if it will either, but he was going at a very high rate of speed and that certainly contributed to the severity of the crash. On the other hand, how often do you think that would happen? Who would EVER think it would happen?

Exactly. He couldn't or shouldn't have been going more than the caution speed, but 55 is fast for most of us even if it looks slow when they're going that rate! It still amazes me how they keep control going as fast as they are and so close together. I'd be freaking out for sure! Guess that's why I'm not a race car driver, huh? LOL

Actually he was driving in excess of the caution speed. If he had been behind the pace car he would have had to drive the caution speed, but because he was driving around the track to catch up with the pace car (having spent considerable time in the pits) he didn't have to observe the caution speed rule (I'm not a NASCAR rules specialist by the way...but they explained it a LOT in the 2 hour red flag) until he rejoined the pack.

Lap car pace at Daytona is 70 mph per Charlotte Observer today and Montaya was going about 100. Nascar officials have said that he was doing what he was supposed to in order to catch up to the back of the field.

It will be interesting to see what changes they make. They may need to put in fuel tanks that can't easily rupture on the dryer trucks like they have on the cars.

Tony seems to have picked right back up where he left off at the end of last season...and I LOVE it!

Glad that boring race got interesting at the end. I know there was a lot of sentiment for a Hendrix win, but quite honestly that race was BORING until the last 5 laps.

Well, Kurt Busch has done it again and gotten himself suspended from racing this next weekend in Pocono. I guess being sent down to a "B" level team didn't teach him anything. Granted, I'm sure certain reporters are trying to make him lose it, but he's the one responsible for his own actions...sad for James Finch.

I am still pinching myself!
I could barely watch the last 17 laps.

So, I have a confession to make. I'm quite jealous. A friend of mine is at the race today in Pocono. But if that isn't enough to be jealous over, she has Pit Passes.... but WAIT there's more.... she's visiting a friend of hers who works as an athletic trainer for the 48 & 88 teams, so she's gotten to meet a lot of members of both crews.

AND.... she's sitting on the 88 pit box for today's race. Yep. I. AM. JEALOUS.

But the bad news for your friend is that (1) Dale Jr. had to go out of the race for 18 laps with transmission problems and (2) rain. Lots of rain!

But it was good news for Jeffie. Not a fan of his but even I felt bad for the guy - could anyone have any worse luck up to this point this season? It was time something went his way.

And the other good news is that JR kept first place in the points!

Thankfully, they had left the track before the lightning strikes, since Jr was out early. She sent me a couple pics from Pit Road, including one of the 88 in the Garage before the race.

I'm thinking that Tony Stewart should start looking into a baseball career - his aim with his helmet was phenomenal!

Yeah but I don't think they'd let him pitch 2 handed in MLB.

Wow, did you see that crash yesterday? Besides the fact that it put Tony out of the lead (and he even admitted it was his mistake) - it sure does confirm that the safety of racing in NASCAR has come a long way since the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt. I can't believe Tony's car flew up, on top of and rode on several cars and he walked away seemingly uninjured.
