A friend sent me 'Joseph Anton a Memoir' by Salman Rushdie. It is Rushdie's memoir of when he had to go underground after writing 'The Satanic Verses' and was sentenced to death by Khomeini (Joseph Anton was the name he used). Has anyone here read it?

My friend who sent it is a voracious reader, so I'm sure she must have felt it will be a great book to discuss after I read it. I haven't had a chance to talk to her about it yet. I'll post my thoughts on it once I get a chance to read it.

I finished reading The Voodoo Wave: Inside a Season of Triumph and Tumult at Maverick's by Mark Kreidler and learned about big wave surfing and surfers.. of course I was around surfers in high school in Newport Beach and have had any number of friends who were obsessed with the sport.
Started a book I'm enjoying and I really appreciate the author so far in so many ways.
Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog by Susannah Charleson.
Not lendable. I got it when it was $1.99 for a day.. back up to $9.99 and would be worth that.
But just getting started. Just like her..

I read that a long time ago and remember enjoying it. One nice thing about historical novels is they don't get dated.

I just read Objects of My Affection by Jill Smolinski. It was just okay for me. It had a lead character that was hard to feel anything for.
I'm reading Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante now. I've heard only good things about it.

"Born in Ice" by Norah Roberts. Not an author I'd normally read however it was recommended by two of my pool aerobics cronies. Thought it would give us something to talk about together. Enjoying it so far; just have to skim the romance parts.

Just finished Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and it's a MUST read for everyone. I waited months on "hold" for it at the library and it was worth it. Now I want to read her earlier 2 books which are also "hold" books. To those who like "memoirs" I recommend Wild by Cheryl Strayed which describes her hike on the Pacific Crest Trail by herself. I am currently in the trilogy of Fifty Shades and on the second book. Lots of disputes on this, but I'm enjoying it and reading them as a very romantic love story. The porn is soft and not like what people have told me, but everyone has different opinions. (First time poster)

It was definitely one of my favorite books this year. I didn't love Wild but I know many who have.
Cheryl, I enjoyed both her other books but Sharp Objects was my favorite of the two.

Cheryl, I'm also on the second book of Fifty Shades of Grey books. It also reads as a romance to me. I actually hadn't read a romance book in a long time, but my sister got the books and gave them to me to read. Okay so far.

Only a couple hours away from being done listening to New York (Rutherford). I've LOVED it! I read his London book years ago, and they both remind me of Follet's Pillars and World without End. Epic historical fiction with enough characters to care about that the story is engrossing. I'm also finishing up The Book (M. Clifford) for the second time - AP kids are reading it, and I needed a refresher. As soon as I'm done, I'll be re-reading Dorian Gray this week - also for AP kids!
