I think Elementary was originally only going to be 13 episodes and this was it. Then they upped the order to 21 and renewed it to boot. But they already had the serial killer plot line planned out with the Finale in place. So, they filled in the season where the needed to (which is why there was a gap with the serial killer storyline) and ended it the same way they planned.
I read that they'll start in London next year, but will try to figure out how to get back to NY.
I'm so glad it got renewed, but was pleased with how it ended. When he was in the Captains house and the Captain said "She's my daughter" I got goose bumps when he said "She's my best friend". And when he told her that he loved her when he was leaving. Man, that got me. I love them as partners. I'm so glad she went with him.
