I always find it curious when they remake a historical movie or show. It's not like they need better special effects or they want to show improved technology. Anyway, I'll probably have a look (which is of course why they are remaking it). Is the original available to watch as well?

I don't see the original available except for pay on-demand, Jimmer. My listings only go to the 24th right now, but I have a feeling someone will air the original before Memorial Day.

I often think it's just sheer laziness or lack of imagination, that they remake movies. Most of the time the original was far superior, anyway.
Oh, as with artist's who remake someone else's song...that irks me.

I agree Repertbear2. My husband and I often lament the lack of imagination. I am also peeved by the trite humor, usually of the potty variety, pandering to the lowest denominator.

it will never be the same as we experienced it in the 70s. Most everyone in America watched that mini series weekly. I remember being embarrassed to be white when I went to school the day after the first ep. I think many of us had read about slaves and the history but seeing it was so much more horrifying than reading about it.

Pamy, I watched the original Roots back in the 70s when it was on (in black and white--we didn't have color yet!). It was on every night for a week! It was a real commitment to watch something like that in those days, cause VCRs weren't yet common.
It was truly landmark television. Why I'm not interested in watching the remake.
I just checked Wikipedia and found this:
Roots originally aired on ABC for eight consecutive nights from January 23 to January 30, 1977. My mom and I watched every single episode.

I'm thinking this Roots is geared towards a younger generation so I am also thinking most of us that watched the original will probably pass on the remake. It will be new for a lot of people.

With the combination of being on a cable channel now and the rules about what can be shown on TV being much more lax after 40 years, I bet it will have things from the book they weren't allowed to have before. I am looking forward to seeing.
I only just saw the original a couple years ago. I remember all the adults watching it when I was a kid.

Roots came on my freshman year in college. I can remember everyone crowding into the lounge to watch it on tv. (No one had tv's in their rooms) Not only was it an amazing show, the experience of all of us..men/women, black/white all crammed in watching together is what I remember most.

That is what was really cool about the old days. Because there was no recording/time shifting/streaming people had to watch and experience shows at the same time. It was a mutually shared experience and that is missing today.
At least now with Twitter, some shows are getting the actors to tweet live when the show airs and that is getting people to share more again.
In a way technology has both isolated us and brought us together.

I graduated in '77 so I understand all of this and real time watching. A whole group of us would get together at a friends house and watch shows like SNL & Mary Hartman/Mary Hartman. There were other shows too but it was a group gathering and we would enjoy the times. Boy so much has changed and so much has stayed the same. I feel I have done a circle. I am back to antenna like the old days and splash in technology. Jimmer I like how you worded it.

On Showtime tonight there is a movie I have been waiting for.
The Stanford Prison Experiment

I am wondering if Kevin James' new comedy, "Kevin Can Wait", is going to be like a "King of Queens 2.0".
I loved KoQ so it's something I wouldn't mind.
