The Orca, and I just now realized that the great white shark has only one natural predator, which is the orca, thus the name of the boat for the movie.I learned that when a group of my workmates and Bigdog and I went out whale watching on the Neptune Society's boat in San Francisco, and we went out to the Farallon Islands, which are 28 miles offshore from SF, and which we could sometimes see from out living room window in SF. Where was I? Oh ... so we had a great trip even though we never saw any whales, but saw dolphins everywhere. One of the attendees said she was never going again, because what we saw on that trip could never be topped. The next week that same boat went again to the Farallon Islands. Very close to the boat, an orca and a great white shark got into a tussle, and it ended with the orca coming up out of the water and biting the great white shark in two. Our team won trivia on the cruise ship today!!! There are around 9-10 teams playing with up to 10 players each, so it is a bit of bedlam even getting your answers to the team captain, let alone convincing the team captain your answer is correct. Bigdog at one point said if his answer wasn't going to be used, he was leaving the team (MAJOR trivia crime, the cruise director says trivia is the only blood sport played on cruise ships). And then Bigdog was wrong!!! Bwahahahaha.
So this was day 3 of the tournament, and Bigdog and I had been sitting at the far end of a large oval, and I would take our answer over to the team captain, and then she would confer with others sitting around her, and sometimes they would use our answers and sometimes not. And we lost miserably both days. Even though Bigdog pulled us out with the correct HUGE bonus question on day 1, we still didn't even make top 3 scores. We were pretty demoralized but resigned to our fate. Then today when we arrived the captain and her son rearranged the seating, so I was sitting next to them, and Bigdog was next to me. And it turns out the players the captain had been relying on, had only had one right answer between them! No wonder we all changed chairs. The cruise director has a helper who keeps the scores, and the value of each answer goes up for each round, so even if you get all four questions right in round one, that can be wiped out by another team getting one right answer in round three, and the bonus could wipe out most previous scores. If you were the only team in the room to get the right answer, the score for that answer got doubled. So nobody in the room really knows which team is ahead.
But we did pretty well, and Bigdog was the only one in the room who knew what the WD stands for in WD-40, and our team went with it and got double points in the intermediate round.
Then the final bonus question, worth 80 points, was: in computer talk what does HTML stand for? So I shrieked out, "I've got this one", wrote down an answer and handed it to the team captain, and told her just copy this out; it's the answer. And then her son wanted to quibble if I had the third word right, and I deprecatingly asked him if he had a better word, and he didn't, so I suggested we just go with what I had, although in truth I was going have to punch him out if he managed to convince Mom to change it. It was correct, and one other team got it right, and a couple others had a couple of the right words.
So, at the end, the scores were tallied, and I honestly thought we might make top 3 today, and there was a tie for third place, but we were not one of the teams, nor did we make second place. The team next to us had been winning 1st or second place both previous days, and they came in 2nd today. And so we thought we didn't even make the top four, when, all of a sudden we got announced as the winner today by 10 points!!
Our team all won Seabourn baseball hats (which sell in the gift shop for about $30 of course).
Whew!!! Thank goodness I sometime in the past 10 years decided to just memorize what HTML stands for because it might come in handy playing trivia one day. Today was the day. Bigdog said he knew I would know it, bless his heart.

Mamie, you are not going to freaking believe this, but you are exactly ONE DAY late with this question - we had it yesterday for trivia, and missed it, but won first place anyway, and I have been kicking myself ever since, because I was sitting there telling the captain that sesquipedalia means big words but then I kept getting thrown off by the hippo and monstro at the front of the word, and told her to just go with horses, which is the same answer the leading teams gave. So all of the stuff at the front must have been about "irrational fear of". And if we had put down big words, we would have been the only team who got it and received double points. How bizarre you have it today!
