I spent the summer of my 19th year in Kauai, when a girl I met freshman year of college invited me to stay with them for the summer (both of my parents had just died), so I accepted. The first night I was there a bunch of my girlfriend's friends came over for a party, and I did not understand a word they said. Turns out they were speaking English, sort of. By the end of the summer I was fluent in Pidgin, even had a little Japanese-American boyfriend.
