Do they have to be in a single layer? I am having some family over tomorrow and I really don't want to use my oven and heat up the house. But my bigger crockpot is broken. Can I stack them? How long would you cook them?

And I'd like to know from anyone who's done it -- is a crock pot baked potato like an oven baked potato or more like a potato cooked in the microwave?

I've cooked them several times in the crock pot. I usually stack them because I don't have a big crock pot. They come out great and taste like an oven potato. I usually cook them on low for about 9-10 hours, but sometimes it takes longer. I think it depends on the size of the potatoes. I would allow a lot of time, and then when they are done enough for you, just leave them in the pot and turn it off. They will stay hot for hours.

I wrap mine just like I would for the oven, and then cook them stacked 10-11 hours (like Gumby said - depending on the size). They are delicious, and taste no different from my oven-cooked potatoes.

I'd never even thought about putting them in the slow cooker but now I will, especially in these summer months when you just don't want to turn on the oven.

This is the closest thing I can find that my mother has http://www.amazon.com/Stove-Top-Potato-Baker/dp/B001T8B3ZS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1247763262&sr=8-6 Her's is an old enamel wear one from the 1940's and holds up to 4 potatos. We use it all the time on our gas stove and they always come out perfect and it doesn't heat up the house.

my crockpot cooks on the hours (10, 8, 6, 4) rather than high/low. well, i put them infor 10 hours, then got nervous they were taking to long so i put them on 6 hours and now they are done, and i don't need them till 7:30. i put them back on 10 hours. LOL

I tried it. I put one russet potato (pierced and wrapped in foil) in my one quart crock pot for ten hours. There's no temperature settings on it. After cooking / baking, the inside of the potato was a pale brown. It was a little different from a microwaved potato. Somehow better? Probably wouldn't do it again just for me.

I cooked them unwrapped but rubbed olive oil and then salted them with Tony Chatchere's for 4 hours. They were really good. Nice brown color.

So, If I pierce each potato, rub with olive oil and sea salt, stack four of them in the crock pot...how long is the best time for a regular pot with high and low setting and would I use high or low? Thanks!

JMHO - but I'd use low and cook them 8 hours or so (if they were extra large, I'd go longer.)

I always thought a crockpot required liquid! So, if I do potatoes without the foil...do I not add even a tablespoon of water? Can't wait to try this! TIA

No water! When I do a fatty pork roast, I don't add water either...the fat from the roast keeps it from sticking to the bottom. Keeping the lid on with a low heat can produce condensation if there's any kind of liquid in the meat. With the potatoes, all you need is the heat.

Now for the holidays, I use my crock pot for sweet potatoes. Just clean them, pierce them, stack them and bake them through the night. Early in the morning, I turn the pot off. Later remove the skins and make my casserole.
