My oldest brother gave me a Roku box. My tv's also get some of the apps. My cable just went up $30. It's now $102/month. Thinking about letting it go. I have a converter box that lets me get all over the air channels. Just ordered a Tablo recorder that is supposed to work with it. We will see. As a widow,I cannot afford all this stuff anymore.

An increase of $30 is a lot! I agree that you can find better alternatives.

I googled streaming channels. I am surprised a lot of those have deals where you can get lots of channels and even recording for less than the cable services. I had no idea!

New Q=OK so after a storm the power went out. Now my tv won't turn on. Is it true that that's it? It is now trash!?! Nobody can fix it, nobody wants to, not worth the price IF you can find a tv repair place, so what, I just have to trash a tv I paid $6-800 dollars for 5 years ago?! Can flat screens be recycled? Am I the only one this has happened to? What to do???

Yep, most likely fried. Did you have it plugged into a surge protector? That usually doesnt happen when you have it plugged into a quality surge protector. Lucky for you, you can buy buy huge 55-60 inch tvs for under $400 now. Maybe even less. Walmart has 40 and 50 inch tvs for between $200-$250. You can drop off old TVs at the the big appliance stores.

It's frustrating but these things are now so complicated to repair, with prices continuing to come down it's simply more cost effective to buy a new one.

I have a tv that occasionally won't turn on. If I power cycle it, it will turn on again. Now I just stopped turning it off... I just mute it when I'm not in that room (my office).

Flat screens can be recycled. Just google TV recycling in your area to find one.

I have receipt for my last in-home TV repair on 4/06/96 which was of course before my flat screen. $80 parts, $35 labor.

We just got a new tv because our old one was just about to turn 3 years old. It was a Vizeo 55 inch flat screen. It just got the red line going vertical down the middle of the tv. When that starts, it's just going to get wider as time goes by. Luckily, we had the extended warranty on it, and Best Buy gave us full credit of the price we paid for it to go to a new tv. $900.00 We had done the same thing with the tv set before. When the repairman came to the house to verify the problem, he told me that the manufacturers stuff so much stuff into the tv these days, that they are bound to die after a few years. So, if anyone is going to buy a new, expensive tv, it is well worth it to get the extended warranty. Plus, Best Buy delivered the new tv and took away the old one.

I have receipt dated 3/07/08 for my first and quite certain only so far flat screen TV, 40" Sony Bravia. To go with it I have TiVo Premiere XL DVR I got on 5/14/12. It is still going strong -- KNOCK ON WOOD.

Grooch, you realize you are replying with plural pronouns and possibly none of us know who the "we" is. Not that we need to know, but of course we actually really do need to know. Because we are your secret figments, and we would never tell anybody and we can't, actually, because we are all merely figments of my imagination.

Not so much techie as DUMB at this point. I have (pay for) a number of streaming apps / platforms.. I like big choice in what to watch. I like Hulu and what's on it. I'm paying $14.99. Have had it for a few years. Facebook newsfeed ad today -- $7.99. It's going to go up over the years, but that much difference bothers me. It is only $7 more. Paying for TV now. NEVER had cable or satellite.

$7.99 is with commercials. You pay $14.99 for commercial free.

Naja, shudda figgered that myself. I pay to skip commercials. Only place to watch "Code Black" was on FreeVee. It was OK that way. Very much liked Code Black. I did cancel Paramount+ with Showtime because it continues to air the last two episodes of "Your Honor" as live / on demand. Couldn't watch it. I added Showtime again to Hulu. Those two episodes aired normally on Hulu.
