And of course we’ve Anglicized them and they sound sometimes quite different from indigenous pronunciations in their native tongue.

Record rainfall prompted evacuation orders for about 100,000 people as the Skagit River north of Seattle is forecast to crest almost two feet (0.6 meter) above its historic record Thursday evening.

And so, tonight, after seeing a LOT of stuff on Facebook about the rivers flooding in Whatcom county, where I live and Skagit County, where my great-niece lives, 25 miles south of us, I thought to ask her on her Facebook page how bad the flooding is for her and her husband, since I think they live only about three blocks from the Skagit River, and very close to downtown Mount Vernon, She replied that they had already evacuated to OUR town yesterday, just a few hours before the mandatory evacuation order was issued! Yikes!!! Anyway, they are safe and have a place to stay in our town, and can stay in our house if that falls through.

I watched Seattle TV on the Internet and they were pretty much 100% covering the flooding. Looks like the rivers will crest this weekend.

Hearing people say that this current historic storm in Washington caught people by surprise.
So lets get the word out that more is coming. Spread the word!
Multiple strong atmospheric rivers are likely across the western/northwest U.S and British Columbia through late December.
The extent of any potential dangerous flooding is still in question, but chances are increasing. Also, landslide threat also increasing.
After this atmospheric river, another one follows late next week.

I lived in the Tacoma area from 1963 to 1983 and of course I remember rain. The joke back then, especially in Western Washington, was if you could see Mt Rainier it was going to rain and if you couldn’t see Rainier it was raining. A drought in my years was maybe a week or two without rain. Even had the t-shirt that said “Washington Rain Festival 1 January to 31 December”. 😬 And yes we had earthquakes, snow storms, icy roads, and once a volcano explode but other than maybe minor flooding nothing like these atmospheric rivers of the past few years.

The SUN is Shining and fog is gone leaving some nice blue skies. Now it is chilly, currently 44, and temps are only going up to 45, and then back down to 38 tonight!!!!

We have a little breeze and it doesn't feel that cold as long as you can feel the sun, LOL.

As for birds…..the majority here have headed south. I did fill the feeder at noon and I’ve only seen five or six birds, and those might be the same birds coming back for seconds and thirds, instead of the typical dozens. I figure the way I go through seed I feed maybe 100 different birds in a day.

Conditions across southwest Pennsylvania and southeast Ohio rapidly going downhill as winter storm moves in.
Here's a view east of Washington, Pennsylvania on I-70 showing whiteout conditions.
Heavy lake effect snow can be expected across northern Ohio and northern Pennsylvania, as well.

An arctic air blast is sweeping south from Canada, spreading into the northern United States. Meanwhile, residents of the Pacific Northwest are bracing for possible mudslides and levee failures as floodwaters slowly recede.

It was 52F at 7 AM which I had thought was the high for today. It was as the forecast actually has it dropping into the low 40s as the day progresses. 🙁 Another big change as we actually spent time on the patio yesterday with temperatures in the high 70s.

Gale force wind warnings for most of today here in the Texas subtropics. We used the unheated swimming pool early morning, water temp was still around 77, but will drop tomorrow after overnight lows in the upper 50's.

It's 18° right now and we got 6 or 7 inches of snow yesterday. It was a wet snow, so I'm certain it's all a deep sheet of ice now. I'm glad I have today and tomorrow off. Gives me time to try dig my way out.

Today was the day! When it was four degrees colder here in subtropical south Texas than back home in the Pacific Northwest. 51 here, 55 there, high winds both places. BUT, we live in exactly where all the big floods are occurring in WA state, and more atmospheric rivers are coming this week, so more rains will be dumped on the area.

59 - wow that cloudy rain cover really warmed us up! It did rain a bit overnight, my balcony railing has some drips. The sky is still cloudy and gray since there is a prediction of some rain.

The rain won't be here, LOL, only a 2% chance. Temps are going up to 64.

Okay… Portland weather has been interesting. Big windstorm overnight, taking down trees and power lines. Tomorrow, another Pineapple Express will hit with massive rainfall all day. No rest in the near future for the flood weary areas of the PNW.

As people across the country prepare for holiday travel, dangerous wind gusts and heavy snow will produce hazardous conditions and potential infrastructure impacts from the Northwest to the North-Central U.S, the NWS says.
