The advantage is correcting the path of the rock. Since the actual competitors are calling it cheating and it's purposeful, I'll go with their language. Tough match for the women today!

I’ll gently mention that the rocks usually weigh more than forty pounds. They can’t be corrected by accidentally grazing it with a finger. People who have experience with curling understand it’s a nonissue. The Scottish player who got called for it was astonished. For that reason, after discussing it with all the teams, the officials decided to discontinue monitoring it unless specifically requested. Anyway, it’s supposed to be a fun game and it’s a shame if this creates a distraction and spoils it for the players and the fans. It’s great that everyone here is having fun watching it. https://share.google/aimode/vh6LT5emcwQS7rJ24

This article explains it differently, it does make a difference, it is cheating, it didn't appear to be accidental, and the officials are going to increase in number and watch more carefully. And the Canadians were quite rude about it: "It was an unusually tense exchange at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium on Friday: Canadian curler Marc Kennedy cursed out Oskar Eriksson from the Swedish team, telling him, "You can f*** off." The hot mic moment, streamed live to shocked curling fans, came after the 9th end, as the Canada vs. Sweden match, which Canada won 8-6, drew toward a close.... According to the Swedish team, Kennedy had been double-touching the stone — releasing the stone's handle, which contains electronic sensors, but then "poking the rock itself" and keeping a finger on it as it cruised over the line, Swedish curler Niklas Edin said after the match. "That's not allowed. It's pretty clearly stated," he said. ....Edin accused Kennedy of doing the move on purpose. "You don't touch 20kg of granite with your fingertips without feeling it, it's completely impossible," Edin said, "We, in the sport, know how very few grams of pressure can change the speed when it already has a movement forward. You can move some degree of the angle (too)." " The article also says that they are ADDING officials and will monitor more carefully. I think NPR got it right. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/16/nx-s1-5715941/a-curling-scandal-rocks-olympic-ice

I just can’t. That article is like me telling you how to look after a horse after I googled a few things. Anyway, it will be interesting to see how this plays out over the course of the next few tournaments. Whether it continues to be an issue or whether it’s just quietly forgotten. They did temporarily add officials to watch more closely, but then at the request of the players, they decided to remove them. In all the years of curling, this has never been an issue. That’s why they’ve had so much trouble figuring out how to handle it. I will say that this hasn’t been a great moment for Canada. The Canadian curler’s response was totally out of line.

NPR is a highly credible source. No, it's not the same thing as an average person with no background in journalism or reporting looking up a few things about any subject matter. They clearly cheated, and now have been put on notice. And teams can still request the extra monitoring, so they haven't done away with it entirely.

Kar, the announcers, at one point in the game, kept saying something about how both teams had to deal with the ice conditions in this morning's men's game. That the ice was different from yesterday and both teams need to adjust for it. I don't know exactly what was wrong with the ice today, but I've said from the beginning of the games that these Olympics has an ice problem.

Grooch, the announcers said it wasn't the ice, it was the stones. Midway thru the tournament, they re-sand them, causing them to curl more. The players had a hard time adjusting to the additional curl.

You see the difference is that the Olympics will end and most of the people watching Olympic curling will forget about curling for the next four years. The people who have more experience with the game will continue to watch as they always have on a regular basis. Having said that, I'll add that there is nothing wrong with that. Part of what makes the Olympics wonderful and so much fun is it encourages people to be exposed to and learn about things they wouldn't otherwise. Curling is a surprisingly awesome sport. Hopefully, no one will touch anything going forward (be it intentionally or inadvertently) and we can just enjoy the game.

NPR is a credible source. . Cheating is cheating. Yes, I think the threat of additional observation did the trick. Shame it was necessary. People will forget about all the Olympic sports for four more years when this is over. that's the way it always is.

I think they have been asked to stop talking about the ice. At the beginning of the games, Tara and Johnny were talking about how the ice wasn't quite right and that is why you could hear the blades on the ice. They don't mention it anymore but you can still occasionally hear the blades and I haven't ever noticed that before.

Just out of curiosity, do you think that the player from Scotland who was called for the same infraction was also cheating?

Oh honey, I am SO sorry you have to be asking that question. The answer is, obviously, Canadians would never even dream of cheating. They would not cheat. Ever. Ever. I just sent an e-mail to my older than me Canadian ice sports expert friends, husb who played professional hockey and wife champion curler, asking them (ONLY IF it would not raise their blood pressure too much) if touching the stone is cheating.
