I was just at Best Buy picking up a new receiver for our outdoor music and stopped by their gaming desktop computer section. Got talking to the guy covering that area and I mentioned the Klugway V. Told him I was curious to see what it would have cost to buy off the shelf. We went over the specs of my build and he showed me their closest match…..$2,500. My rebuild cost $1,000 all in. 😀

And in the meantime, I am coaching 86 year-old widows in (almost) full control of their faculties how to use the $25 wireless mini-boom-box speakers (that I bought) with the (probably also mine) obsolete android phones, to play the water aerobics tape that my husband put on the obsolete phone music app, so that they can have a fun water aerobics session when I am out of the country. Mack, how soon can you get out here? It's Pacific Northwest, always cool. Life is good.

There are times I miss the Pacific Northwest but not enough to move back there.

Bwahahaha, that too, Kooklie. Took me a minute to get it. I do find the older women to be inspirational.

Back to Windows 11…. So far I like it though there is a bit of a learning curve from years of using Windows 10. It seems to be much smoother and faster though admittedly I have also upgraded the whole system as posted above. I think it really helps that I did a clean install of Windows 11 on an SSD that have not been used before. The version of Windows 10 I was running on the old system was actually a multi-generation of upgrades probably from Windows 7. That means it was full of basically old operating system files that just took up space or had a bunch of “go to” code to bypass old aspects of Windows 7 and how even many Windows versions up to Windows 10. Of course Windows 10 lasted for a long time and had a boat load of updates, corrections to updates, etc., etc. All in all despite the expense I am happy with the outcome.

LOL, there is definitely a learning curve. I search google a lot to say where is xxxx in word or excel, took me a while to figure out how everything moved around. I do use Editor now, don't know if is was in 10 only found it with 11, for all the minutes and newsletters I prepare. I really like it.

We have two desktop PCs and now both are up and running Windows 11. I have an older laptop that I used to use when traveling and while I kept it up to date I really haven’t used it much lately. I finally decided that I either was going to update it to Windows 11 or get rid of it. I ran the systems check required by Microsoft for updating to Windows 11 and it came back saying it wasn’t supported. In other words not able or eligible to be updated. After some hunting around on the Internet I came across a video on YouTube that demonstrated a workaround. Basically it uses a utility called FlyBy11 to tells the Windows 11 install to ignore the system requirement. It’s free and indeed works so I now have Windows 11 on the laptop. 👍🙂

I'm mostly on my desktop, but I did that, too! It was some time back and I can't find the posts where I was explaining it. I used a different free utility, though. 11 gave my laptop a lag that I don't like at all. Good thing I had 2 ssds in it so I could dual boot. I'm just going to replace the laptop. Maybe for Christmas

My laptop is maybe 10 years old and I don’t think it has SSD slots or at least I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. I need to do some research on the model before I take it apart. If it does I’d switch to an SSD in a heart beat. I really can’t justify buying a new laptop.

Mine is very old as well. I think 2013 I got it. But I had replaced the Harddrives with SSDs. 2.5" SSDs fit in exactly the same spot and hook-ups as the old 2.5" harddrives. Here, I took a pick of them next to each other.

Going to open up the laptop but barring a surprise I’m looking to install an SSD and boosting the RAM. Good thing about basically obsolete technology there are plenty of upgrades for not much. 🙂👍

Thanks to YouTube I was able to see how to remove the panels on the back of my laptop. Other than you have to do it in a certain order and you’re working with very tiny screws I was able to access everything I needed to get to. Again, thanks to YouTube, i figured out what and how to replace two critical parts. First, per Naja’s recommendation, I’m upgrading to an SSD. Secondly, I discovered the laptop only has 4 GBs of RAM which is pitiful. My iPad, iPhone, and smart watch each have more RAM than that. All in all the two parts will cost me about $60 and Amazon should deliver today. Again, what you have to go through t9 get to Windows 11. 😳🙂

ugh. My "processor" isn't compatible, but everything else has the green check. I really didn't want a new computer from Santa (me), but I guess that's what I'm getting for christmas.

The Windows 11 compatibility report said my processor wasn’t supported but the Flyby 11 utility got through that and I got Windows 11 loaded. Before you buy you might want to try that or a similar utility. That said there are still some processors that are so old that even the bypass programs won’t work. Worth the try and if a utility can’t get Windows 11 installed it’s a “no harm, no foul” situation and the utility will leave you with Windows 10 so you can still use your computer.

OK thanks MAck. My laptop is not great. The keyboard doesn't even work right and I have to use an external one. I had to have someone rebuild it for me after things went awry a couple of years ago. It is 7 years old. Just not the kind of thing I want to spend on when I barely use it. So perhaps I will give it a try this fall (the flyby).

Nope, that doesn’t sound like it is not worth the effort. My laptop was actually older but once I went to an iPad it was rarely used and despite its age it looks and works great. I want to use it more often now but it really needed at least a partial upgrade. I got the new SSD cloned and installed and it is already much faster plus it is super quiet. I still have to upgrade the RAM but Amazon sent me the wrong RAM…..their mistake not mine….and I expect the replacement to be delivered this evening. I learned a long time ago when upgrading PCs to do one thing at a time and if possible test before making the next change so I already planned to swap out the HHD for an SSD and upgrade the RAM but not at the same time. Opening the back is a bit of a pain but in the last few days I’ve done it four and five times so used to it now.

All done! Works good and worth the effort. Is it great? No but it is an occasionally used laptop that I have squeezed 12-14 years out of. The investment in parts and pieces wasn’t all that much and the effort probably kept me out of trouble. Is it up to the speed and power of my recently reworked desktop? No way but no way did I it expect it to be.

Thanks, all who have posted here. I am getting very close to the too old to care age, while sitting in my "home office" with a half dozen or more Dell "road warrior" Latitude laptops that Car54 encouraged us ALL to get 20+ years ago. It would not surprise me at all if Car54, if she is still alive, is still reading here, and I thank her for making me get those laptops. It is probably time for me to make the leap and get rid of all of those old ones. Oh hell, I probably still have a Sony Vaio TN stored somewhere here that was like the sweetest tiny laptop EVER, and I bet it still works.
