LOL, I have managed to recycle / shred my receipts for things like restaurants, etc, those show up on my credit card statement. And then if it's tax deductible I log it in my excel spreadsheet and file it away in my folder. Now you remind me, it is probably time to shred a tax folder or two, that I have in my file cabinet.

RN Always trust your instincts, no matter what. I usually trust mine, but sometimes I think I’m just blowing something out of proportion. Here’s my story… About 6 years ago, I was having problems with my foot. My regular doctor thought it was a Morton’s neuroma and sent me to a podiatrist. I went and as soon as he came into the room, I had a really bad vibe about him. But, he did his thing, charged me way too much and wanted to see me again in 6 weeks. I left and decided this was not for me. I’d just deal with it myself cause I did not want to go back. Couldn’t place anything specific, just didn’t like him. Well, tonight, the local news is reporting a local podiatrist has been arrested for multiple counts of sexual abuse with his patients. You guessed it, it’s the same podiatrist that creeped me out. The moral of the story is to Trust your instincts. That, and I’m pretty creeped out right now.

Wow, Kooklie, good instincts. And good to act on it too, sometimes we don't because of politeness.

Kooklie, good for you!! Good instincts. My family doctor owns the buildings where his offices are and in his building besides a husband and wife psychiatric and psychologisst there is a practice of several podiatrists.. They share the waiting room, so I see all the post surgery people and others limping around. I was walking a LOT a few years ago, probably 10 years and my doctor was very specific about which of the podiatrists he sent me to, one who wouldn't push surgery and such and I went to that one and he basically gave me good advice about shoes, said I had a bunch of hammer toes, which is true and said could I do surgery? Yes, but do I recommend it, no.. So I was satisfied. Getting good referrals is so hard! And making sure they are in network. And then you get a good one and they retire. But your podiatrist, Kooklie! Dodged a bullet for sure. As for Home and Garden.. good for those accomplishing so much but long ago I realized that thread left me feeling super inadequate, so it is best that I stay away. No one's problem but my own, clearly. Very late last night I had pain in my scalp under my hair and it occured to me it might be shingles, shich I have been through before (before I had the Shingrix shots in 2017) and then I called my doctor on his day off and he quickly called in a prescription and the case was mild. So I first felt this at 3am and at 8:05am I called my doctor, who faxed in the prescription and by 9:05 the CVS Robot called to say my prescription was ready. By then I was ready to leave.. So I'm grateful that in this instance, healthcare worked for me!!

"And then you get a good one and they retire." Spring of 2020 I lost three of the four doctors I see regularly. Liked them all so much. Optometrist retired. PCP, not old enough to retire, simply moved from here (Chicago 'burbs) to Key West! Dentist...pancreatic cancer. I guess I've replaced PCP and dentist. Optometrist -- still looking.

I’m pretty cautious about doctors. If I don’t like one, I won’t go back. When my regular doctor retired last year, he referred me to another one in his practice. I’ve gone to her 3 times… at first, I was on the fence but, gave her more time because of the referral. I’m getting used to her, but don’t like that her answer to everything is a prescription, even when all my blood work has been exactly the same for the last 5 years. I’ll push back when I have to.

Would someone with Firefox mind going to Amazon, doing a search for something, and then see if you can change the drop-down from "featured" to anything else, like "price: low to high". No matter what I do, it stays on "featured". It's ok in MS Edge, but not firefox. Things I've already tried: Deleted all the amazon cookies and site data, signed in and out more than once. It's been this way for me for at least couple weeks. I even reinstalled windows and all my apps from scratch Tuesday night, and it's still doing it. Thanks for checking

It doesn't matter now. My PC died It was such a good pc. I spend the last 5 hours doing everything I knew to revive it, but it's not working. I can't even get to the boot from a USB recovery drive.

Mine died awhile back. The motherboard died, so that was that. I don't use Firefox.

Can someone tell me if one of the dogs I babysit ruins something like a throw rug, or anything else, can I write off the cost of the replacement with the rest of the business write offs?

Naja, you can expense the cost of the replacement. Do you have a separate checking/credit card for your business? Just use that to purchase. Keep in mind that, altho very unlikely, you might have to show that the item that was ruined was not at the end of its useful life. So, I wouldn't call it a replacement. Just call it a need for your business.

Possibly, if you specifically bought it as part of your business expenses, but there are still issues. Writing off rugs that are used in a home that you live in would be very questionable. If you purchased dog rugs specifically for the business and they were damaged, they might be able to be partially written off. That is, if they are not 100% used by your clients all year, you may be able calculate a portion of the damage due to the clients. Having said that, since you have your own dogs using the same rugs, it still might be questionable should you be audited.

PS... I think it highly unlikely you would get audited. And evenso, if they did disallow the expense of the rug, they would simply require that you file an amended return omitting it and paying the tiny fraction of taxes due, plus penalties and interest. In my experience, having been thru audits, for such a small item, they would just say, don't do this again. That said, I think you can still make an argument that these are necessary for your business, as I mentioned before, for the safety of client dogs not skidding on slippery surfaces and injuring themselves. And you could argue that you weren't worried about this for your personal dogs.

Well, what happened was the puppy snuck past the kitchen gate and came downstairs where dogs aren't allowed, and pooped and peed and a non-washable rug. I tried spot cleaning like the instructions say, but the poop stain does not come out. I may not be the most fancy person, but I don't leave out rugs with poop stains. LOL Kar, I don't have a separate account, but I do buy anything I plan to write off on a separate bill from anything else I buy. I print the invoices and hand the pile to the accountant at tax time.

I think that's a legitimate expense, Naja. I will recommend you try something like MyPetPeed or FurryFreshness... Never found a poop stain that they won't dissolve.

You could possibly book it as compensation to you the individual from you the business. But the compensation would be the cost of a professional cleaning or a used rug, not a the cost of a new rug. If you wrote a new rug off as an expense, then that would (officially) have to be a rug that's wholly used by the business, in a business area. Kar is correct that an audit is very unlikely, but auditors do sometimes pick through business receipts and say things like "show me this rug," and if it's in a personal area it would probably be disallowed. Personally I'd either not expense it at all, or book it as cleaning expenses (if you paid to clean it) or "Compensation for damages" if you compensated yourself the cost of a used rug (detailed in "Other expenses" on your tax return). I wouldn't book it as "Supplies" or "Office expenses." JMO

Kitt's advice is the best! And more clear than mine! I still recommend the FurryFreshness or MyPetPeed, which would be a full business expense, I believe, since your dogs don't soil in the house.

One thing I learned while looking up what I could about write-offs, is that any gifts I get the regular clients for this coming Christmas are 100% deductible.

Up to $25 per client, Naja (which of course is plenty, but just in case!). And also that limit is per year, in case you give them something for doggie birthdays too. You no doubt know, but the cleaning stuff Kar recommended would be fully deductible too.

Thank Kitt! And by the way---- Can anyone think of an inexpensive gift for the clients? I don't have time for baking, and I'd really like for the gifts to be useful. I was thinking this these personal rechargeable fans. They were the BIGGEST hit as stocking stuffers last year for Mom and Aunt Nancy. Everyone wanted one after seeing these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D142ZWB9
