Hurricane Helene wiped out much of downtown Chimney Rock, North Carolina — a village so small it doesn’t even have a stop light.
Businesses, homes, bridges and main streets were completely torn apart in the town with just 140 permanent residents.

Oh! I forgot to mention that Sunday morning we woke up to a street flooded up to the curbs, and our younger than us, but way less well than us, and way more unsteady on his feet than us, barefoot with water up to his calves, raking a drain in the middle of the flooded street. It is deep into autumn here, and we live in a beautiful private community with many huge and old oak, sweet gum, and maple trees, all of which are dropping leaves.
He was clearing the street drain, which was clogged with fallen leaves, to allow the water to drain out and unflood our surrounding houses. He also had a caretaker with an electric car coming to take care of his wife, and he wanted her to be able to park her car at his house. He was successful.
I did seem to recall hearing some really heavy rain beating on the skylights overnight. Turns out we had 2.2" of rain overnight, more than half of all the rain we received in the whole month of October.
When I got to my e-mail, I found out that a landslide had overflowed retaining walls on I-5, the ONLY major freeway between Seattle and Vancouver, BC, and a tractor-trailer rig was stuck in the mud.
It was a pretty big deal for our town. This looks to be a pretty good account of the whole thing"
