RN Yes, it's $75 for subsequent cleanings. BUT, I did go ahead and cancel. I signed up for monthly cleaning and thought I would cancel before then, but there is a big cancellation fee. So I cancelled now.

Yes, and they charge monthly the only way I was able to cancel it was to change my cc number to a cc that was over the limit LOL.

RN, Naja, if you are a member of nextdoor.com, that is a good place to ask for house cleaning recommendations. You might find people who LOVE their house cleaners, and would like them to have more clients so they will stay in the house cleaning business. If you speak enough Spanish to get by, you could also state that in your post. Dogs speak all languages, but are most fluent in the language of love. Also, RN, Bigdog is the cook in our family. He does our artichokes in a pressure cooker. But your Mom's method is likely very much the same, just slower. I suspect the lemons can probably be dispensed with if you are serving the artichokes with melted butter. Also, RN cancelling the credit card you never use might be a good idea, but maybe not if it is your only back-up in case something goes wrong with your main account. If you decide to keep the card, go check it to make sure you are the primary account holder, and all of your information is up to date (which you have probably already done because you are you).

I was reading along, remembering my first artichoke, which was cooked by a Japanese co-worker at my first job as a programmer trainee.. So good and the heart! She cooked in water with maybe some salt and some oil but we ate dipping into mayo not butter. So good. Then continuing and was about to suggest nextdoor but saw Juju's post..

Juju, how many minutes does Bigdog cook the artichoke for in the pressure cooking? I used to try doing it that way, but if it's to long, they come out mushy. If not long enough, they are still hard, and it's a pain and time consuming to let all the steam out and then getting the whole thing going again.

I always add a little lemon juice to the butter, because, besides tasting good, I feel like it helps cut all that fat in your stomach.

RN Okay, I must be the only one who does not like artichoke. Had it in a restaurant where it was their specialty. Couldn’t finish the bite I took. Made me gag. But then, I’m not a fan of a number of vegetables.

RN I love artichokes fixed all sorts of ways. Of course, I also like a pretty good variety of vegetables too. I thank my parents for that. They fixed it, you ate it. There were a few things like my distaste for lima beans, which actually became a sort of family joke later in life, that I won’t eat at all or generally just avoid.

RN I really can't stand cooked carrots. When I was kid I would actually gag when I was forced to eat them. As an adult I can get them down, but I avoid them. I pretty much like most other vegetables. OH, eggplant is another I can't take. I don't care if it's all cheese and sauced up either. Just yucky!

RN. Don’t get me started on cooked carrots! We always had them mixed with peas when I was young. Bleech! Shouldn’t be a big surprise that I don’t like cooked peas either. But, had to sit at the table until we finished them. Fortunately, she would leave the room and we’d fling them to the dogs. I do like raw pea snaps and raw carrots though.

Kooklie, I felt the same way about eating meat! Was forced to "clean my plate" and I had to choke that nasty shit down, and each bite with a big swallow of milk to wash it down. Never really like meat after that, so good thing I became a pescatarian!

RN Oh goodness! I can hardly think of a way I don't like meat(meaning beef, pork or chicken). Although, I have never had steak tartare, so I don't know if I'd like it totally raw. But I do like rare steak.

RN Kar, my parents were from the meat eating Midwest (Iowa, Nebraska). They would buy a side of beef… yes, half a cow, every 6 months or so thinking that was cheaper for a family of 6. We had every single freaking, horrible part of that cow. Meals were beef, potatoes and an overcooked vegetable. Every once in a while, we’d have chicken on Sundays. To me, that was a real treat. I rarely eat beef and mostly will have chicken now. Beef has no appeal for me taste wise. Oh and I never had Mexican food until I was in my 20’s, but that’s a different story.

RN, Naja - I just never liked it apparently, and being forced to eat it just made that worse. Later in life I would enjoy a quality steak now and then, but then I toured a meat packing plant... and uh, never again. Kooklie, luckily my mom was raised on potatoes in rural Germany where they couldn't afford meat (probably why she couldn't cook it very well). I could eat potatoes all day long and no one has ever made potato pancakes or German potato salad that I liked as much as hers!

RN Kar, My mom wasn’t the best cook. Actually, quite horrible. So, boiled or mashed potatoes were the choice. Then she learned about boxed potatoes. 🤢 To give you a clue, my mom’s idea of Spaghetti sauce was a can of chef boy ar Dee mixed with about 4 cans of tomato sauce. When they were older, I’d bring over already made chicken spaghetti sauce from scratch for them. My mom raved how good it was. I replied that it’s how it tastes when you use Italian spices and not a can. From then on, they had frozen containers of my sauce in their freezer until the day they passed.

RN my mother was also not a good cook. My father cooked most of our meals as he had worked as a line cook to pay for college. All pretty basic mid-West “meat and potatoes” meals because of his German heritage. When they separated and eventually divorced I was 14 years old so I started learning to cook. I imagine some of those early dinners were really horrible but we survived. My late sister and I used to laugh about some of the more spectacular failures even years later. Today I cook quite often and enjoy it. My wife and I rotate who is cooking and who is assisting and very few meals are only totally prepared by one person.

RN, it's so funny to read about the Moms that basically cooked stuff to death. I remember that as well, plus I don't know why you have to cook a canned vegetable more than 5 minutes, but they did, LOL. And don't start in on fresh, the only fresh veg we had was a potato.

RN we really like fresh produce and it is much easier to get today than back when I was a kid. I can remember even as an adult the days when you got what you could get when it was in season. Today with massive industrial greenhouses, imports from Central and South America, and better distribution systems you pretty much get anything year around. The produce section at the locally popular HEB grocery stores typical take up to 20%+ of the store’s square footage.

RN Well, it ends up the bank took it upon themselves to just give her the money on or around Jul 25, and she didn't tell me, or she didn't know when we talked. The bank should have let me know!
