It took more than 80 firefighters about 50 minutes to extinguish a large fire that had fully engulfed a commercial building in Downtown Los Angeles late Sunday evening.

Beryl has been temporarily downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, which will reduce the threat to the Windward Islands somewhat.

It’s undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle, which means a brief spreading of the radius of maximum winds and subsequent reduction in maximum speed.

So now on top of the high temperatures and drought we are going to get hit with Saharan dust for the next couple of days. The stronger than normal west winds off Africa and not only breeding potential storms but also pushing the dust into the Caribbean and eventually into the Gulf of Mexico. This is the first of a number of cycles so it will back off then come back in a week or so. It will make the skies look a little hazy and the sunsets will be a little more spectacular. Surprisingly it is heavy enough it actually make it less humid as it dries out the air.

Central California is beginning to feel like we're living in Arizona. I'm escaping to the ocean while it's 108+ degrees for multiple straight days. I can handle a few days of it but not this many in a row coming up. My biggest fear are the hundreds of idiots around us who shoot off illegal fireworks for days around the fourth and how dry all of our yards currently are.

I agree Kappy, we have some stupid fools already setting off fireworks here at night!

Thank goodness my forecast shows only 108 instead of 111 for Wednesday!

Hurricane Beryl lashed the southeastern Caribbean as a Category 4 storm — an unprecedented strength this early in the Atlantic season.

That Saharan dust sure gets around the world. We were on a cruise ship once off the west coast of Africa when the Sahara dust started blowing. It was odd to go out on deck and see it accumulating.

This is unreal. Hurricane Beryl continues to defy all known logic, this devastating storm has now become the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin by a whole two weeks. I can't even stress enough just how completely absurd that storm is.

Unprecedented is an understatement.

You should try living in Morocco just a couple hundred miles west of the Sahara. Lived there three years and we’d get huge dust and actually sand storms that would block out the sun. They were called Sahrocco storms. It got into and on everything. On top of that a really warm country to live in as it was it would get downright hot. I was a young teen back then and kids would joke we had a lot of beach but not much surf.

Starting out it is already 86 .... going up to 108 or 111 depending on what forecaster you watch, LOL.

Skies are blue and clear with a tiny breeze.

Temps have finally dropped down to the 80's, currently 84. And after enduring some evil stares from my cats all day I have opened the balcony door, turned off the AC, so they can lay on the concrete, LOL.

Temps are back up ... currently 98 headed for 108. Clear blue skies with a bit of a breeze.

Some fools were setting off fireworks at 2am last night. Off to check on the fires.

Excessive heat warnings are in effect for much of California and southern Nevada and parts of Arizona, Washington and Oregon.
