Sugar, have you checked out youtube how to videos? I recently took up painting (on canvas) and was looking for directions on a technique when I thought to check out youtube. I was thrilled to find a bunch of painters who do how-to videos. I wonder if you could find some on doing the type of cake you want that have better directions?

Wargod, yes I did watch a couple how to video's. They both showed the way to do the technique but not the recipe. I did finally find a recipe and I think it might be a bit more work than I care to do today. If I could jut use a cake mix....

The German Chocolate cake was okay but not up to my mom's standards (of course she's dead now so thankfully she isn't around to pass judgment). I think I overbaked the layers (I'm still trying to get used to my gas stove). I will make it again next month (my dad's 91st birthday - and that's the whole reason I was trying to make the cake - although he didn't get to try it when I made the trial cake because his taste buds had been compromised by radiation treatment...but thankfully now he is back in the land of being able to taste stuff now) and tweak the recipe a little (not the recipe - the way I make it...LOL!) and he will be thrilled.
The batter was delicious!

What the heck, while I'm at it, I will add a couple of cakes I made for Easter a 5 or so years ago. I think of my mom when I see the yellow basket cake as she thought it was pretty. She died suddenly not quite 3 years ago and it is a nice memory.

Sugar, those are fabulous, you are a very good baker and cake decorator. That basket-weave is impressive and I love the shamrock and star inside the cake, so cool.
