My daughter bought a Samsung and it's got the best picture ever! It's making me want one badly.

I just reminded myself of something (imagine that). The first time I took my mother to BJ's Wholesale (it's like a Sam's Club), she said, "wow, look at the size of that jar of peanut butter!" and I said, "Mom, everything here is bigger." We'd walk a little further and she'd say "wow, that's a big jar of olives!" and I'd say "yes, everything here is bigger" and this went on and on through the whole store.

Sometimes we are just overwhelmed by big things.

TV all set up and running!

HD works but not at optimum until I get the upgraded DVR with HDMI cable. The Geek Squad guy managed to hook it up with the coaxial cables, and while there is a noticable difference from standard to HD, but not stunning. So better than I expected to have at this point seeing as I don't have the right equipment yet.

As for hanging on to this DVR until its empty and get a new one at the same time, I don't think they'll let me do that. I remember them saying I have to trade this one in. But no biggie. We don't have a whole lot left to watch on this one, so hopefully we'll clear it out and get the new one soon. I'm suspecting I won't have any trouble getting WhosMom out into the living room from her bedroom now. So we should get it caught up in no time! The crapper will be having to reset all my season passes, especially the shows that are not currently airing.

Its soooooo nice to watch and not have the picture blink out!

Who, who do you have your dvr from? If it's not a local cable company, you might have a little leeway. I know with DIRECTV they mail you the new receiver, and you have like 2 weeks to mail the old one back to them.

Yay Mamie! Tell us when you get yours. We can have an HDTV cyber party! LOL.

Serate, LOL on the Who who..... Our DVR is through Comcast. I did go into chat with them last week and they said I could have two DVRs on the same TV for a while until I clear off the old one, (and of course pay an extra fee for the added one). I think I'll give us till this weekend, and if we don't clear it off, I'll get the upgraded one and overlap them for about a couple of weeks until I get all the programming transferred over to the new one. Naturally one of the problems is we keep recording new shows each night, so we have the old ones to watch and clear off, along with the new ones too. LOL.

I mentioned in another thread that we just got a new TV to replace our relatively tiny TV. The difference is stunning. I am entranced by high definition. LOL - It makes almost anything look good. I can't wait for Survivor and the Amazing Race and the Olympics!

The good (or bad) thing about our situation is we already had high definition before we got the TV. Well we didn't see high definition but we had the capability.

Just a few days ago my husband won a big TV at work; it's a Samsung and it's pretty nice, has a very clear picture. We don't have HD with our cable (I don't want to pay for that), so I can't say anything about high def.

Wow! Congrats to Sia and DH!

I can't wait for Survivor in HD too Jimmer. I also have Lost set up for HD. And TAR just showed up on my DVR list, so its lined up for HD too! Yay!

So far, we love it! We have to get the HD DVR from the cable company today.

Got our new cable box (DVR) today. Picture is nice and crisp. But now the standard channels are all showing up with the sides chopped off/blackened. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be or what. It wasn't with the old one, but it could also be the picture was a bit stretched. The "tech" was a clueless useless waste of time. He wasn't able to answer any of my questions. I'd have done a better job installing than he did.

It's not, Who. But I think you need to change the setting on your TV, not your DVR....

It must be something with the newly installed HDMi cable. When viewing through the box only (which connects directly to the TV with the HDMi cable), it cuts off the sides. The box also feeds to the VCR, and when viewed through the VCR, I get the full picture. When viewed with straight cable (bypassing box and VCR), I get the full picture too.

Actually, I do think I'm getting the full picture in all cases, just that the HDMi viewing is compressed more (thus the blackened sides). I've looked at it so many times now, I can't tell if the more natural picture is the compressed one, or the stretched out one. I think I need another pair of eyes to look at the bloody thing. LOL. I can use WhosMom's one good eye when she gets up next. LOL. If anything, the Geek Squad is due to come out soon to "calibrate" the tv. I can address the issue then if I can't figure it out by then.

Who, I had to program the HD DVR to set the HD screen size and to tell it to go to 1080I (I generally like the HD channels at 16:9 widescreen best), and the other channels remained full screen. Check your paperwork for your HD DVR to see what they say. That said though, I can change either to whatever size I want by using one of the buttons on the TV remote. Sometimes I like to blow the picture up to double zoom to check out the wrinkles on the beautiful people, lol

Our TV has the black sides too when it's not on hi def or you can set it to stretch the image in various ways. It's simply the dimensions of the image. A regular TV image is a different dimension than a hi def image.

Yay! I think I figured it out! The picture size was set on 16:9, and I put it on "Wide Fit," which says, "stretches the picture both horizontally and vertically to display the optimal picture. You can view a 16:9 aspect ratio without any distortion or without black bars." So that sounded pretty good to me!

Of course, the Geek Squad may come by and say, "why the heck do you have it on that setting!"

That's good you got it sorted out, Who. I would expect your high definition picture to fill the screen. I do know a lot of people who seem to have trouble getting their picture to look that way.

We got our HD cable today and got our sizes all straightened out. It's amazing what it looks like. It's weird to watch the TV in our bedroom now.

Yay, Who! You did figure it out. If the Geek Squad says anything, just tell them you like it that way. It really is a personal preference. We made the plunge to the HD tv this summer. What a difference. I wish we had it with us in FL to watch the Olympics.

I was watching the movie Casino yesterday and the colors were so vivid! I told my son that you aren't supposed to love inanimate objects but I love our TV! LOL
