You're right, obviously enough people fall for the scam that they make enough money to keep it up. Never, ever, never let somebody take control of your computer remotely. Once these guys do then you have to pay them to give control back to you. They wrap it up like they're removing malware but truth is that they're the malware. And no, they imbed code so unplugging or turning off your computer doesn't give you control of your computer back.

Dogdoc, If your television is telling you who is calling, then you have Comcast telephone, which includes the voicemail and caller i.d. We don't have ours set up to do the on-screen teller i.d., but we have seen it at Bigdog's brother's house, and it was very cool.

To set up the voicemail, you hit *99 on your phone. Then after that, you can go to your Comcast account and log in, and go to the Voice tab, and set it up to send you e-mails with your voicemails transcribed.

One Note is a feature of Windows 10, I think, and it sounds like you might be using the new Windows 10 Edge browser. I have not used either of them to know for sure. But I bet you can just Google One Note and figure out how to use it. When I saw it briefly when I set up Windows 10 on a spare computer, my mind said to me, "Oh, this is like Google Drive" which I also don't much use. BUT, if that is correct, and if you saved something to One Drive, you will be pleased to know that YOU, Dogdoc, are now "cloud computing!!!" All it means is you saved something to online storage rather than in (or in addition to in) your own hard drive.

Juju, my on-screen caller id came on all by itself awhile ago,

Yes, I am on Windows 10 Edge. I would rather have Google Chrome. I was used to that.

Do you know how I can backtrack and recall my Favorites when I hit those lines next to the ? I feel like I am stuck in the cloud now. I didn't even know I was there.

If you didn't use iCloud or some other version of external storage on your old machine then your favorites can't be recalled to your new machine. That information is generated at the computer level so if not shared above the immediate computer level it's not available. In essence you have to start rebuilding your favorites list be site at a time. Luckily in our four upgrades to Widows 10 we had external storage, iCloud and files backup storage, and were able to download those. Have to say in all four machines we've defaulted back to Internet Explorer 11 rather than Edge.

Thank you Juju and Mack.

I had my favorites in my new computer. I just had to hit those lines and there they were!

Since I hit the one drive they are gone. Now 'reading list' comes up when I hit the lines.

I have Carbonite for my external storage.

Thank you Karuuna!!!! So that line thing is a 'hub'

When I hit it came up mail, but there was also a 'favorites' off to the side. I hit it and got the favorites back.

I feel so much better now. I thought I had done something really bad!

For those tired of the "scam/robo" phone calls, Consumer Reports is trying to stop them.. See: www.EndRobocalls.org

Thanks Kitkat. I wish them luck. Even they want a donation though.

Dogdoc, you can also have Chrome on Windows 10, although you might have to download it. Up in the address bar of Edge, just type in download chrome for windows 10, and it should bring up a Google link where you can download Chrome for free.

Internet Explorer is also already on your machine but hidden because they want you to use their new browser Edge. But if you go to the Start button, or whatever they are calling it, and type in internet explorer, you will find a link to it and can use Internet Explorer if you don't want to download Chrome or don't know how, or don't want to use Edge. I decided not to use Edge myself just yet.

Your library probably also has free classes or one on one tutoring on how to do things like download and install a program. And since you have a laptop, you can just take your laptop there for a class, and see how to do it on your very own machine.

I will do that when I build up some courage Juju.

Thank you. Edge seems to be fine.

Well, and here's some courage - you will NOT break your machine. You might mess up a setting and think you have broken your machine, but you will not have. Almost all things you might mess up are recoverable. And you actually can fix almost everything yourself by Googling to figure out what you did wrong and how to correct it. BUT, in order to be that brave, you almost need to have a second computer available so you can use it to Google what you did wrong on the other one. I have four working laptops in this room with me right now, LOL.

And, then, of course, you have to have the desire to spend the TIME on that pastime. And some people would rather spend their time elsewhere.

Every time I boot up my computer now, I'm pretty sure I have a background program that is opening and closing repeatedly. I can tell cause of my sound scheme. The "open program" sound goes off, followed almost immediately by the "close program" sound. And it's happening in the background, so I can't see what's going on. It goes on and all all day now, no matter how long I leave the computer on.

I tried looking at the Task Manager, to see what what coming and going, but there are too many background tasks going that I can't really pinpoint which one is doing it.

Is there a simple method to find out which program is doing this? I assume it's been corrupted somehow, and that's why it's opening/closing. I'd like to figure out which one it is, then research where it came from, if it's important or if it should be updated or just removed.

It's so annoying, cause now I have to turn my sound scheme off cause I don't want to listen to those sounds going off all day long!

I have Windows 7.

That's a tough one Whoami. Unfortunately I've switched all but one of our computers over to Windows 10. I'm not seeing anything strange on the one old laptop running Windows 7 that can't be upgraded to 10. That said every once in awhile I've had similar issues or problems like you're describing. I can't say I've always been able to figure out exactly what happened or is going on. I've suspected that sometimes it has been a bad update download and that it keeps trying to "fix" the problem. I really don't know and I don't know of an easy way to figure it out. Personally I'd probably check Windows Update and my virus update to make sure I had all the most recent updates. Even though those are supposedly automatic there are times that one or more get hung up and don't load.

Can you use the restore to a previous date to go back to a day when you know whatever program it is was NOT turning on and off? I've done that before and then ran my Malware Bytes and Antivirus.

This is only a suggestion, Whoami because I know very little about computers.

I had an issue a few weeks ago and decided to run the free Piriform CCleaner, which I'd previously downloaded for free.

It has an option to scan and fix corrupt registries and I used this to find and fix whatever it was that was causing the problem.

Highly second the CCleaner - it is fantastic even in its free form. :-) If you go under "Tools" you can see what is enabled at start up. I use it to turn off things like Itunes, etc. so my computer will start faster, but you might be able to see there what is starting that you don't know about and you can "disable" it so it doesn't automatically start when the computer starts.

Whoami, I had that happening for a while on my Windows 7 computer, maybe 2-3 years ago. I have no idea now how I figured it out, but I somehow figured out it was a phantom USB port, or maybe a faulty USB port. And I don't recall if I found that out by looking at each USB port in Device Manager and seeing there was one that looked different. Or maybe I disabled them one at a time, and when I turned one of them off, the noise quit. I do know I figured it out by poking around in Device Manager.

I also remember going into my sound scheme and listening to every sound I was using and then seeing which operation I had that sound associated with. Where I had two sounds using the same sound scheme, I changed one of them, so I could further pinpoint which operation it was. I finally concluded it was the sound associated with plugging in an external device, which I guess led me to the Device manager.

Good luck.

I have a new question. I am on my new Dell Inspiration windows 10. Today, all of a sudden the internet windlw'square' shrunk. Print size is the same. How do I enlarge the window to the world?

Thank you.

Now it is stuck on full screen. If I hit the line to reduce or the box to enlarge, the screen goes off.

I'm sorry Doc! The only thing I could find was to click on the thin blue line surrounding the window and drag it to the size you want. It sounds like you have to do this from the upper right hand corner...(assuming you are running Edge)

I am on Edge, but now there is no thin blue line. The whole screen is full.

At the bottom right hand corner there is something called 'internet access'. It is lines making 1/4 of a circle. It says 140. Would that have anything to do with the size?

Thank you!

I followed a trail to get off full screen by going into settings to turn full screen off, but it was already off.

I restarted the computer and I am still on full screen. I don't like it l
