I heard about it but do you know exactly what it is and how to determine if your computer is one of the ones that will be impacted?

Go here: http://www.dcwg.org/ . They have instructions on how to check your computer. I did and mine was clean.

I got green and this message...does it means I might be infected? Your computer appears to be looking up IP addresses correctly! Had your computer been infected with DNS changer malware you would have seen a red background. Please note, however, that if your ISP is redirecting DNS traffic for its customers you would have reached this site even though you are infected. For additional information regarding the DNS changer malware}

Perfectly safe. All the news reports I've seen point to just this one site. I used it myself and wouldn't have posted it if I had even the smallest doubt.

Thanks guys and Mack for posting link. That bolded part of the message about the IPS redirecting was a bit confusing.

I think the bolded message is a "cover your butt" kind of clause. If your ISP has been re-routed, checking the list manually might be the only way to catch it.

You're welcome Mameblanche Per Sanfranjoshfan's linked posted in another thread: http://news.yahoo.com/malware-may-knock-thousands-off-internet-monday-063924510--finance.html According to the FBI, the number of computers that probably are infected is more than 277,000 worldwide, down from about 360,000 in April. About 64,000 still-infected computers are probably in the United States. Looks like the numbers are fairly small, but always better to be safe than sorry

The numbers are VERY small. There is MUCH hullabaloo about almost nothing. If you've updated your AV defs in the past year, bought a new computer in the past year, are behind a firewall, yada yada yada... the odds are VERY low that you will lose your internet service. I think it's hilarious to hear and see all the "OHMYGAWD" stuff going around. I think last count there are only about 20,000 computers that *may* still be infected. 20,000? That's pretty much a needle in a 1000 haystacks. Just sayin'. I'd be surprised if ANYONE here is infected. (MG)

If you're one of the 20,000, it's gonna' be a big ol' pain in the patootie, though. I'd much rather have too much warning and be able to check than to be caught unaware. And many, many people in our county have computers that are 10 or more years old (our school included); not everyone can afford to be up to date.

Teach, you missed the most important point... IF YOU HAVE NOT UPDATED YOUR AV DEFS IN THE PAST YEAR. Along with that, if you haven't done that, if you've bought a new computer, you're protected. If you are behind a firewall, you're protected. People are freaking out about a lot of nothing. While it's not nearly the same as the "oh my gawd, what will happen when we flip over to the year 2000", the end result will be the same... a big giant fizzle. Nothing. Nada. Oh, and no, I didn't check.

How do I know if I've updated my AV Defs if I have no idea what the heck an AV Def is?

LOL. And neither vowel is in the word "bacon!" If you read all the bazillion articles that are out scaring the general public, they all say the same thing... if your antivirus definitions are up to date, you don't need to worry. And oh guess what? What's at the top of the news this morning? THIS sure isn't!

The thing is, Costa - our labs at school don't always stay up to date with Antivirus. We have the cheapest program available, and I can't tell you how many times the "automatic update" didn't work when my classroom was also a lab w/25 computers. You get what you pay for, and some of us poor schools may be dealing with this. However, we won't even know until the computers are turned back on sometime next month. I'm really not attempting to argue - I just wanted to point out that if any of us are among the 20,000, it will be a right big pain in the rear.

Do you have an internet service provider? If so, then it's up to your ISP to ensure your service stays up and running. The odds are so EXTREMELY low that you will not have internet service when you go back to school. I am not kidding when I said a needle in 1000's of haystacks. If you were at all updated once in the past year, you were protected. This is really a major case of crying wolf. I would be so surprised if you lost your service in the fall, that if you did, I would fly to Michigan and fix it for you.
