Lucky find, Hecka! Our library has to carefully allot funding, so if we have something on Libby, it's not repeated on Hoopla.

"Her Name is Rose" was good, with a few compelling storylines. My only complaint was that the ending was a bit abrupt. I'm reading "The Key to Deceit" by Ashley Weaver. It's the second in a series. I didn't know this before I started but it isn't a problem. There are enough explanations to follow along without needing to read the first book. I might read it later because I'm enjoying the main character who has some similarities to Nancy Drew, if Nancy had grown up to be a clever criminal who has been blackmailed into helping her government's war effort in 1930. lol

I finished "This Rough Magic" by Mary Stewart. It was okay.

I finished "Never, Never" by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher. It was good, except! they never explained why the teenagers were losing their memories every day. That part, non-part was very disappointing.

Just finished "Howl's Moving Castle" by Dianne Wynn Jones. It was okay. I saw the movie many years ago. None of it seemed familiar at all.

Teach, I LOVED How to Read a Book too! Monica Wood was scheduled to do a talk at our library this month but had to cancel due to an illness in the family. She did an author's talk for us after The One-in-a-Million Boy came out and was very nice. If you haven't read it, you should. You would love it too.

It's on my list! I'm currently listening to Outrun, but One-in-a-Million Boy is up after that.

Mamie - quite a few of those are new-to-me authors that I found on Libby through the free Queer Liberation Library. Highly recommend the free card as it doubled my library loans, and the ones I've read have been excellent! Mak - Listening to The One-in-a-Million Boy right now and it is just as good as How To Read a Novel! I'll be reading more Monica Wood in my future!

I was almost finished with "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. They took it back on Libby App before I was done. So annoying! They wouldn't let me renew my loan. Had to put another hold on it. Found out the other book I thought had come up to be borrowed is still on hold also. I only told them to hold it for another week so I could finish "Pillars". So ANNOYING! Now I don't have either book. GRRR!

It’s a good book as far as I remember (read it years ago). As much as I love Libby and the library system, it can be frustrating to have to try to plan your reading around availability. But it is an amazing free resource.

One of the huge advantages of having a library with both Libby and Hoopla is that Hoopla never has wait times, so if I'm waiting for a book on Libby, I can use one of my Hoopla loans.

It's now November and your delinquent Uncle Ricky is trying to comprehend how we're so close to the end of 2024 - amazing. Anyway, here's a rundown of the latest reads: Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne. I found the majority of this memoir fascinating - I just wish it had been a tad shorter because it seemed to go on forever. Wolf at the Table by Adam Rapp. This was a sweeping family saga that was compelling but it fell just short of me loving it. The creepy son of the family is one of the creepiest ever - so awful. I was entertained, though, all the way through. Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson. I remember how disappointing this one turned out to be -- I honestly can't recall what it's about -- his other works are much better. Witness 8 by Steve Cavanagh. I simply could not wait until the U.S. edition comes out (March 2025!), so I was forced to order the UK edition (released this past August) from Amazon UK and it was worth every penny. Absolutely delicious, as per usual - Cavanagh is a master storyteller. Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner. This is the long-awaited follow-up to Fleishman is in Trouble and I had to rate it much higher than FIIT, which itself was a great debut. This is another family saga and I lost count of the times I laughed out loud. Tall Oaks All The Wicked Girls We Begin at the End All the Colors of the Dark (ATCOTD) These are the four novels written by Chris Whitaker. After Mamie raved about ATCOTD, it made me do a little research on Whitaker's career and it sounded quite interesting. I don't usually do such a thing, but I pinned down copies of all four novels and read them one right after the other. Whitaker has a knack for writing about quirky, troubled young people (usually in the 12-to-18 year old range) who drive the plot of each novel or at least turn out to be the most memorable characters of each book. I really enjoyed all four, but the latter two are much better than the first two, mostly because he kept maturing as a writer. Without question ATCOTD is his masterpiece. I'll be shocked if he is able to top it. The final page will absolutely rip you to shreds - I was weeping!

Mak1 - I LOVED ONE-IN-A-MILLION BOY!! October was so incredibly busy that I did the audiobook, and that next-to-last chapter detailing what happened to the boy had me crying as a I drove to work. So beautifully written!! Thank you so much for the recommendaion!}

I knew you would love it, Teach!! When Monica Wood came to our library, I told her that I love "her boy"! She said "Oh, I do too!" Someone asked if there was a diagnosis for him. She replied that she wrote the book before there was as much known about people "on the spectrum". She surmised in today's world he would have been given some type of label. She was just writing a book about a quirky boy and said that she had been a quirky kid herself.

How awesome that you met her! I suspect she's right that he would have been given a label, but I also suspect he would have been loved by many a teacher - this one included!

I did get to finish The Pillars of the Earth. My sister bought the book for me. It was really good. Especially the next to last chapter. I just finished "All the Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr. It was really good too. Set in World War II.

That's odd. It's available online at Barnes & Noble, amazon, Thriftbooks and maybe others so libraries should have it.

Heckagirl - Can you put in a recommendation that your library purchase it? I've found books before under the author's name but not under the title of the book. Rare but it can happen.
