I was getting really nervous for her, because at the beginning it seemed like she was going to hear horrible things about her granddad, who it seems like she'd actually known throughout her childhood. Luckily it became clear later on that the grandmother was an extreme alcoholic and probably lied about the abuse. After the show she tweeted asking if anyone had any more information. I hope she can fill in some of the gaps.

I just finished watching on my dvr. That was so sad, with such a heartwarming, touching ending! I'm still wiping tears. MameB, it might replay next week before the next new episode, because that is what happened this week.

On my schedule it doesn't have a repeat of the Christina Applegate episode until just before the next episode (Chelsea Handler). So that's Tues Aug 6th at 5pm (I guess 8pm for you). Chelsea is at 6 or 9pm. It's now on TLC not NBC if that's what's stopping it taping for you.

Thanks Kitt! BTW, I can't stand C.H., but curious about her 'story' nonetheless.

Christina's story was one of the saddest yet. I watched it this morning and it made me cry. Her grandmother had a lot of sadness in her life. I do think the grandfather abused her and then when he tried to get her child from her she handled it by drinking, since she was losing him to the father's family. I wish Christina had asked her father if his father was at all abusive or controlling. How very odd Christina's Dad doesn't remember his mother at all. I'm glad he put a gravestone on her burial site and it seems to have brought him and Christina closer together. Her grandmother's sister must have died pretty young as well, right? Mameblanche, when you record it on your DVR, add a few minutes because mine stopped before the very end...maybe a minute short. I'm going to add minutes next week.

Good episode. I cried too. I got the feeling that the grandmother was a bit of a floozie and a drinker which made the grandfather angry and abusive. Christina's father did not have good parental role models that's for sure. Who is next weeks?

When Christina began telling her father the story, I could see the confused and hurt little boy inside. It broke my heart. I am so impressed with Christina for giving him that heartfelt affirmation and for "parenting" him in that moment. As Bombaycat said, kudos to her for sharing the story. It is good to show anyone interested in their ancestry that you don't know what you will find when you start poking around.

Thanks Angel. I also thought she was good when her dad said, "do you have any good news?" She said yes, that you broke the spell and raised great kids that went on to do great things.

Yes, it was very touching that she was able to turn it around into good news, and it was as her dad obviously had few role models bouncing from home to home. I'm not surprised he has no memory of his bio mom, he was 4 when his maternal grandma died, so if that's when he went to live with his paternal grandma -- kids really don't have many memories from those ages. I think we often think we do because of photos or stories we hear, but my DD has few vivid memories of her preschool or any of the kids and teachers she spent years with. It's hard to know who to believe in the court docs. It would seem that she was a heavy drinker, partier and maybe that's how they met, but then when you're married and have a kid on the way he wanted her to tone it down and got mean and angry about it. It makes sense that she won custody but then had to give the child up when she couldn't take care of him and support him. And how touching that the maternal grandma bought a cemetery plot for her grandson. Heartbreaking really.

Another interesting episode. I particularly loved the part where she spoke to the soldier in France. Also so interesting how well the pow's were treated -- so evident in the photo of her grandfather. How wonderful that she was able to clear up some of the mystery and so great that she had the journal from her grandmother. Too bad we all can't have something like that to read.

I don't think you'd like her style of humor OG, but she's a gifted comedian. Her books are LOL funny, biting.

I have watched Chelsea Lately forever. She can be ridiculously funny. She has a great round table every night and there is no filter. Love her show. I felt Christina's journey into the past was very touching. One of the best I've seen. Glad her dad got some answers about his childhood.

Loved all three of these episodes (just watched them online). Kelly Clarkson's amazement over everything they found (especially the look on her face when she first saw the photo of her ggg-grandfather) was wonderful to watch. It's kind of the reason we all do genealogy - that thrill of finding the unexpected and looking into an ancestor's face (or story) for the first time. I loved the WWII soldier that escorted Handler through the capture site. You know, if he was a loving grandfather to a bunch of Jewish grandchildren, he couldn't have been too close to the Nazi cause. Interesting about the U.S. internment camp as well. Applegate's father just wrecked me. Talk about heart on the sleeve. I just wanted to give him a big hug. He did good. The show seems to have a bit of a different format under new management. They pick one interesting relative and don't move past them. On the one hand, it's a great illustration of why people should care about the stories as opposed to the list of names. On the other hand, I want to know more about where these highlighted people came from. Clearly Rose (Kelly Clarkson's relative) should have had much more information available if he was here and active in the Civil War. How did he become so energized with the abolitionist side of the war at such a young age? Who were the people who raised him and where did they come from? I'm guessing he had a pretty American history that well predated his entry into the Civil War (although German immigrants were known to be actively and avidly anti-slavery and didn't hesitate to sign up - I don't know if he was German). So glad the show is back!!

I love Jim Parsons a bit more after watching tonight's episode. The love he has for his father is so sweet. He seems to hold himself with such grace and kindness.

I got caught up on Tricia and Parson eps last night. I so enjoy this show and the glimpse into history it provides. So sad that the season is over! Has anyone every watched the UK version? I wonder if it's worth seeking out.

You can, or used to be able to, find a few of them on youtube. They're usually pretty good. The season airing is season 9, this is Patrick Stewart's one if you wanted a taster: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZRMGQ-Au4A

I too love the Jim Parson's episode. Funny though, I couldn't see any trace of Sheldon. Shows just what a good actor he is.
