Did anyone catch the Rob Lowe episode? It wasn't broadcast here, I just watched it online. Really interesting history of the Hessian regiments that served for the British in the Revolutionary War.

I watched it Goddess..the British brought men from Russia and other countries to fight the Americans in the Revolutionary War. It was a bit of history my DH and I did not know. I found it very interesting myself.

There is another site called Mocavo.com which is almost like Ancestry.

I wasn't familiar with that aspect of the war either, Jag. Was glad to learn something new.

Surely you remember Washington crossing the Delaware and the Battle of Trenton?

I know the battle, Gidget - I wasn't familiar with the extent to which foreign soldiers were hired by the British and were present for that battle.

I was kind of surprised you'd said that GAL because I remember even grade school history the stress of the Hessian part of that story. If you'd said you'd forgotten about it that wouldn't surprise me because let's face it we all begin to forget as time goes on. But the fact that you didn't know it was what surprised me. I thought my comment might jog your memory.

yes i watched the Rob Lowe episode. Loved how he was all excited about being SURE that there was a revolutionary war hero in his past......and the shocked unhappy look he had when he realized his ancestor was on the Other Side ROTFLMAO

i thought most of the conjecture was silly. Deciding to allow lowe to be part of that group because his prisoner of war Ancestor paid taxes is RIDICULOUS.

EVErYone paid taxes therefore i guess EVERYONE is considered a Son of confederacy or whatever that 'title' was. i truly believe he was added only because Lowe is a celebrity.

I liked that they travelled to germany to get some Hessian history. You know, things were Soooo different then. the first born son would get the family business OR the farm. the daughters got married off asap if possible and the younger sons would be expected to make their OWN way.

there was no coddling like today.... grown men living with their mommy and daddy instead of travelling or leaving country to get work.

i swear people travelled more in the old days to get work then now.

its one of the reasons immigrants flooded into canada and USA. JOBs and land and the LACK of a class system like in europe.

That class system exists still. My aunt's fav hair dresser was 'let go' from the salon in Vienna because her 'peasant accent' was insulting to the customers.

Here in canada, that is against human rights laws.

Actually it was worse than today for the oldest son. He lived with and worked for daddy until daddy died and he took over. It was only the younger sons who had to make their own way. Of course all daughters had to either marry or live as servants for their oldest brother's family forever.

I just heard on the radio that NBC is cancelling this program. What a shame!!! I really liked this show. I guess ratings haven't been that great.

This morning a critic from HollywoodChicago said the show may not be totally cancelled. Quite possible NBC could use it as a filler show when it has open time in the schedule. Few shows will air at a time. Critic said it would be aired on a schedule similar to mini series.

foreign soldiers were hired by the British

it was political tho. like Allies fighting in iran or afganistan.

i think it was a bit more then the UK just hiring some soldiers.

I'm watching History Channel DVD "Desperate Crossing: The Untold Story of the Mayflower". A lot more detail about William Brewster's life is given than in WDYTYA / Ashley Judd program. Wonder how story / facts compare.

If it matters -- it's U.S. Census records.

I knew there was a word between "US" and "records" in the advert, but by the time I'd got into tvch and found the page to post I couldn't remember what it was! Thanks Color!

Does anyone else here do genealogical research? I just started a year ago and am fascinated! Who knew all this info was out there? Over the past couple days, I think I have checked out all the US Census records at ancestry. IMO, they should always be free.

If there is any interest, I think a genealogy thread at TVCH would be interesting and fun.

I found pictures of my great grandparents on Ancestry and have been on it for about 2 years. Somebody has followed my maternal side of the family back to 1742. It's a fascinating experience.

Have been researching off and on for several years now. It's a project that can take up an unbelievable amount of time. I have been able to find info going back to an 8x great grandfather who was a Jesuit missionary in New France (Quebec) who was somewhat famous!

I've found I had several ancestors on the Mayflower. I agree, it is fascinating and time consuming! I've gone almost as far as I can without buying an ancestry membership. I will do that when I have hit some more brick walls. There is a massively researched Canadian site I need to dig into first.

I go on Ancestry and before I know it 3 or 4 hours have passed. Time flies when you start with the census's.
