I didn't know these pools existed.

Does the water taste a little salty?

My sister has a salt water pool. If water splashes near/in the mouth it tastes salty. As far as being in the salt water pool, it is heavenly, my body loved it.

I never really noticed the salty taste myself. But, agreed, they are pretty heavenly.

I wonder why I have never heard of salt water pools.

Is there anybody else like me?

Salt water pools work better in warmer, sunnier climates because it’s the sun that converts the salt into chlorine. The equipment is more expensive upfront but the maintenance costs in terms of chemicals is lower. Even in sunny climates they don’t always work. My late father had one in Orlando, Florida that got too much shade and never worked right. He eventually had to convert it to a regular non-salt system. Even here in San Antonio it’s a mixed bag, some love “salt water” pools, others not so much. We have a regular chemical maintained pool and so do all my neighbors. Pools are very popular here and I’d say out of the 300 homes in our community 250+ have pools.

My stepson had one for the few years he lived in Houma. The only problem he had was maintaining an acceptable PH level. There is something about the salt to chlorine conversion that raises the PH.

Pittsburgh doesn't get a lot of sun.

We have a lot of cold days.

No back yard pools in my neighborhood.

Lots of barbecue pits though.

The ones I know of are resorts in Tucson. Lots of sun, no shade.

I first learned about salt water pools when visiting friends in Dallas TX many years after we had left Texas and moved to the west coast. The water did indeed feel much better on the skin, but then I forgot about them. Guessing this is a hot weather climate thing?

When we moved to Corona del Mar my dad said we could have a pool but my brother and I would have to maintain it. Wisely we both passes on that. In the end we each had friends up the street with pools, so that worked out.

No saltwater though. The ocean was a mile away.

Now the Great Salt Lake was an experience!

They switched over our condo pool a couple of years ago to saltwater.
