John Ritter was abdominal aorta rupture.

I lost a friend to that a very long time ago, back when I still went to the WTA tennis tournament at Manhattan Beach CA.

OK. Looks like it was 2001.

I had gone for years and met other women's tennis fans there over the years. One woman had been a long-time fan, especially of Martina Navratilova, and she attended Wimbledon every year too.

So we had decided we would go to another tournament in LA.. and she was buying the tickets and I would pay her at Manhattan Beach where we both had longtime season tickets.

I had left her a message and no response.. The first day, I didn't expect her for the daytime session, as the heat had gotten to her the previous year and she was older. I spoke to a woman in that seat during the day. She had bough that ticket from Jean but hadn't heard from her that week.

Then she didn't show at night.

I left another message and heard from her daughter and Jean had eaten some fast food and then suffered from indigestion, so bad that she called the restaurant to warn them. But she refused to go to the ER, though her daughter urged her.

And it turned out to be a rupture of the abdominal aorta.

My mom had put off going to the ER for what she thought were super bad gas pains.. She blamed having eaten popcorn.. My dad finally got her to go and her intestine or colon had ruptures. Diverticulosis. And she came close to dying. Had emergency surgery, had to wear a colostomy bag for 6 months, hated it. They were able to put her back together at 6 months.

Both of those events put me on alert..

John Ritter's sudden death certainly affected many people emotionally and I am sure the family being open about it saved some lives.

Whichever section of aorta was involved in Lindsay Graham's death, it should nudge some people.

So sad :-( I am very curious if they can figure out her illness from an autopsy. Even when she was in that fight some time back, she didn't look well.

Sydney Towle

Sydney was a social media influencer. I guess that would be the best way to describe her though those seem almost like dirty words these days. She had a large number of followers on TikTok.

Back when TikTok started, both my daughters encouraged me to sign up for TikTok because they thought it was fun and they wanted to send me a few funny things that people post.

I have no idea exactly how the TikTok algorithm works, but basically like most social media you tend to see more of the things that you like. So I tend to see a lot of videos about cats and dogs doing funny things, people cooking and baking and a few things about people who like cars and computer tech. Kind of what you might expect.

Anyway, I’m not sure how or why, but one day one of Sydney‘s videos showed up in my feed. She was a young woman who enjoyed life and did a lot of fun things and she also had a rare type of cancer. Her videos were a mix of happy with some sad (as one might expect), but basically just someone trying to live their life as best they can and make the most of it.

Honestly, at one point, I must confess I started to have doubts about her. I don’t know if anyone recalls, but a bunch of us were badly fooled by someone at TVCH a number of years ago who claimed to be very sick but in fact, was not sick at all and was fooling everyone about it. Sydney just seemed too happy and too full of life to be sick and, unfortunately, I wasn’t the only one who questioned it. Some people were awful about it. It got to the point where a New York Times reporter, actually did an investigative piece on her, and determined that she was in fact, telling the truth, that she was very ill, but doing her best.

Her family announced that she died a couple of days ago, and I cried when I heard that news. In a way it seems odd to cry over someone that you didn’t actually know or meet and who you just “knew” through social media. I guess, in a way, that shows the power of social media and how it can influence you. It’s just that she reminds me so much of my own daughters (they are around her age) and some of the things that they have faced in their lives. It happens all too often, but it’s hard to imagine that someone who is so young and who loves life so much and is so full of life can pass away like that.

Although Sydney shared her life and thoughts with everyone very successfully through social media and people who got to hear and see her are probably better for it, I also think it is important that we realize that not everyone is comfortable sharing things and that just because something isn’t shared it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Anyway, here is a link to a New York Times article about Sydney. She was an amazing person and worth a look if you have a moment.
