Jonathon Livingston Seagull. It gave me hope in the midst of an awful upbringing.

When I was young, a babysitter gave me her copy of A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Girl_of_the_Limberlost_(novel)

This was a very old book, even when I read it, having been published in 1909.. Even my parents were born after that year!

But it was fascinating and far more complex than the Nancy Drew mysteries!

My mom also kept me supplied with biographies of strong women and I liked those.

Later came Diary of Anne Frank (but I also read Rise and Fall of the Third Reich).

In my 20s I got into the thick books set in the UK by R.F. Delderfield .. Sagas and got work friends, husband and my mom into them too.

All the Anne McCaffrey books!

And more..

In recent years, I fell in love with the Blessings series by Beverly Jenkins. I have learned a lot of black history from these novels. I have read all and have the next one on pre-order.

I’m enjoying everyone’s posts. Oddly, I can’t think of one myself.

The one book that turned me to clinical psychology was The Little Prince by Antonio de Saint-Exupery. It spoke and still speaks to my heart, my mind, and my view of life in this world. It is in large who I am or want to be.

Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott. It resonated with, and comforted, a very lonely young misfit. I read it every few years. The original copy is in tatters, the cover came off, and it's full of notes, like trying to keep track of all the characters ages. I keep it by my bedside, and intend to be cremated with it. My bookshelf has the same edition, in better shape, plus the sequel Rose In Bloom.

Is There Life After High School? Nonfiction by Ralph Keyes
(It was also, briefly, a musical on Broadway.)
The premise being that while many popular kids 'peaked' in High School, the misfits like Bette Middler used their pain as engine fuel, and created spectacular lives for themselves.
(I was thrilled to interview the author for one of my columns. I thanked him and explained how dear and inspirational this book is to me.)

I found a spinner of paperbacks in the middle of a seating area on the library. It was labeled "classics" EVERY book on there was good. No more hunt for the right one. That spinner made me think, feel, enjoy.

Christy, have you read Dorian Gray? I saw an interview with the actress starring in the new Broadway play of it. I wish I could go see it. So instead, my brother just finished the book and gave it to me to read. He says it's really good.

New Question!

If you could participate in the Olympics, in which event would you compete? Why?

Bobsleigh! I really like Luge as well, but it's much more dangerous than Bobsleigh.

I'm with Dogdoc, the equestrian events. never had much athletic ability on my own, but loved competing in hunter/jumper competitions in my younger days!

I'd want to do cross country skiing. But only if you get to ski through a long trail out in open nature.

If they do it now where the trail is basically a large circle that you have to keep traversing (because of security reasons, or there's no more real snow because of climate change) then I'll have to pick a different sport. I want to be out there taking in the scenery as I ski.

I took cross country skiing for my gym class in college and I really enjoyed it.

I took an archery class in college and was pretty good at it until we moved further away from the target.

I took synchronized swimming in college, and marvel now at the things we did. I couldn't begin to do it now. I also played lacrosse in college, but not in competition, as girls did not play sports in those days. We were much too delicate.

NEW QUESTION!

If you could participate in any reality TV show, what would it be and why?

I have actually had many dreams I was on reality shows! A bunch of times I have dreamed I was American Idol and Big Brother. A couple times I dreamed I was on Survivor. I won Big Brother and went on All Stars. I came in 7th on American Idol.

But if I had to choose, Big Brother first, and then American Idol.

Why? It just looks like so much fun!

When I was MUCH younger I thought it would be fun to be on BB. I figured I'd probably be 1st one voted out, but didn't care, cuz I'd still have bragging rights about having been on the show. Lol

Traitors. I love the setting, the challenges, the host and the puzzle solving.

If I were younger and more physically fit, I would have loved to be on the Amazing Race to travel and learn customs from around the world.

Oh, traitors is a good one! Though, I'd probably drive myself crazy with paronia. I think I'm more of a House Wives type.

Definitely the Amazing Race is my favorite. At one time, a good friend of mine and I were going to apply, but then she had some stuff happen in her personal life so we had to drop it. Darn it!
