Which photography software do you use? As a photographer, I’m curious.

I primarily use Photoshop Elements(smaller version of Photoshop), but also have Lightroom and the full blown Photoshop. Adobe offered a portfolio as part of the Photoshop package, so bought the subscription to the whole she bang. It was cheaper than the portfolio product I was previously using by about $100 a year. I know there are other, probably better option, but I’m so entrenched in Photoshop now that the move to a different one would be horrible.

All of those are available for the Mac. That's what I use.

Yes, but the conversion of all my processing over to a Mac is not some I want to do. Getting everything lined up with just a new Windows computer is not much fun in itself.

In case you’re interested, here is my online portfolio. I don’t sell, this is just for the enjoyment of others and myself. I have thousands of images more than these to manage on my computer. https://colleenhoyt.myportfolio.com/welcome-screen

Understood, Kooklie.. That's why I am about 4 systems behind on my Mac. Upgrading the system software leaves a mess.

Wow that’s very nice! When I first got into the business I was surprised by the number of pro photographers using Windows vs. Mac.

Thank Jimmer. If I remember correctly, Mac had their own processing software, so Adobe was a bit behind there. It was also pre Apple phones and tablets. But, I could be wrong. For me, I worked on Windows from the beginning of the computer at my company. So, it was natural to have Windows at home.

Those are lovely photos, Kooklie. I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements and am currently stymied by trying to get Adobe to let me transfer over a license for Elements 14 that was on a laptop that got fried in a Windows update in Texas last year, so I no longer have the laptop to just go and deactivate that license. And it used to be fairly simple to do if I recall, but Adobe now seems to be primarily in the business of selling annual licenses to use their software and has adapted their website to be as unfriendly as possible, so the older users will despair and opt for the easier lease agreement. I spent about half a day on it and almost despaired, but then I slapped myself and decided to despair in the future.

Adobe is so frustrating! They were outstanding years ago and have been coasting badly ever since. Just terrible.

That’s a good deal. Not a Costco member though. I’ve decided to wait a bit before getting a new one. The one I was looking at with the add ons I needed wasn’t on sale.

That’s a big SSD. I’ve never had much use for touchscreens on laptops though. I find it awkward.

Kooklie, I thought twice about posting the Costco deal, in case you are not a member, but then I thought well, it might just be a good enough deal that it would justify the joining fee. And, yes, Jimmer, I was really surprised at the size of the SSD. And I would also not find the touch screen to be an advantage, although, or because, I have never had one.

SSD’s are awesome. They really drop the weight on a laptop from the old style. You can have so much more than the lid stake of memory. Plus, the company I retired from manufactures the silicon wafers that the basis for the SSD technology. I don’t like touchscreens on laptops either. The one I have now came with it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve inadvertently messed something up by touching the screen.

Yes the touchscreen one I have is so awkward to reach the screen and (unlike iPhones and iPads) the screen smudges so easily. I avoid touching it.

Oh, duh, on SSD's and weight of a laptop!! I had never made the correlation (mostly because my fleet of Dell Laitudes never go bad, so I don't research new ones). Okay, so, Kooklie, and anybody else, I am going on two longish international cruises next spring and summer, and am thinking about getting a lightweight, inexpensive, NOT Chromebook, which seems to be all cloud-based, laptop, that I, as an elderly but strong, woman can carry in a carry-on that already weighs 12-15 pounds. Does anybody have any recommendations? Again, where is JMM when I need her? She is in heaven, laughing at me, I know, I know. I DO have a 2.2 pound Sony Vaio TN sitting in a drawer somewhere in my house. It was the most perfect travel laptop ever, and I even replaced the screen by myself after I dropped it on a tile floor in Australia in about 2007. It was unable to be upgraded from Windows 7, but I bet it still runs, have not looked at it since 2016. Is there any chance it might still serve the purpose of just surfing the web on a cruise ship? So, there are two questions here. If anybody has any input on either one, I would welcome it. Feel free to ask children and grandchildren. Alas, I have neither.

Juju…. I have a Microsoft Windows laptop that I use at home for most things. However, when I travel, I have an Apple iPad that I take with me. I used to bring a small laptop, but found I was using my phone much more than the laptop. For convenience, I found the iPad to be lightweight, easy to use and did everything I wanted a laptop to do while on vacation. I just slide it into my bag, easy peasy. I’ve never regretted this decision. It was also much cheaper to go the iPad route, than a small laptop.

I like that idea. I love my iPad and it’s very easy to carry around. Great for looking at emails, websites (like TVCH) and social media. I don’t use my iPad much for “serious” stuff like big spreadsheets or detailed photo editing but you’re probably not doing that on a cruise anyway.

I do have an iPad, which I love, but I never use it at home, so when I travel with it, I have to relearn how to use it all over again, and that gets frustrating.

Just a general FYI for anyone using Windows 10. Microsoft had said they were stopping their support for Windows 10 this October. People whose PC's were too old to upgrade to Windows 11 (that's a lot of people) would have to pay for extended support for Windows 10 if they wanted it. Well now it appears that Microsoft has extended free support for Windows 10 until October 2026. All you have to do is go into Settings and then Update and Security. At the right side of the screen it will ask you if you want to enroll for extended support. Just click to go through the process. There is no cost. According to Microsoft you need to complete this process by October 13th (but who knows if they'll extend that as well).

OMG, thanks, Jimmer. I just got (probably got it before, but was too busy) the notice the other day that Windows 10 will no longer be updated in the near future and had decided it would be a good time, considering my advanced age, to get rid of ALL (okay, almost all) of the old perfectly FINE Dell laptops I have accumulated over the past 20 years and go to Windows 11, which I do already have on some of my accumulated laptops. Yay!! I can procrastinate for another whole year!!! <does a triple backflip>

If you use Turbo Tax, I received an email from them that the 2025 software download would require Windows 11. It will not work on Windows 10 anymore.

I thought so. Their alternative was an online option…. No thank you. This is the email. We’re reaching out to provide an update on TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025. After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 operating system. Because security is a top priority for us, TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025 onwards will not be compatible with Windows 10 operating system. To use TurboTax Desktop software for tax year 2025, your computer will need to run on Microsoft Windows 11 operating system. You can also consider switching to TurboTax Online, which will work on any supported browser (available December 2025).}

Actually it makes sense that Turbo Tax isn’t going to be support. If Windows 10 is no longer maintained by Microsoft that would leave Windows 10 open to malware, etc. Turbo Tax can’t make changes to Windows 10 so if they supported a Windows 10 of Turbo Tax it would be installed on machines that could be compromised. I don’t want to expose my financial data so I appreciate Turbo Tax telling me in essence not to use Windows 10. If course I guess that’s easy for me to say since our three computers all run Windows 11.

Except that Microsoft is now apparently maintaining Windows 10 (at no additional cost) for people who are continuing to use it.

LOL yes a brief respite. But better than nothing. I understand Microsoft can’t support old versions forever but they also have a large customer base they don’t want to offend and create overall problems for everyone by leaving them unprotected. It’s a challenge for sure. Anyway, I’ll have to upgrade for sure over the next few months.
