This is dumb so I will ask it here. Has anybody else noticed the toilets in the Women's rooms being lower. While out shopping, some are so low, it is difficult to stand up without a grab bar. The older I get, the more I notice these things.

Dogdoc, I think the older we get the more we notice how low some toilets actually are, even in the ha handicap or accessible stalls. I started noticing when I had the tibial plateau fracture in 2021. I added a booster to one seat at home. And in the rebuild in 2025 after an intake valve failed to one toilet, I had all 3 toilets replaced with taller ones. The perfect height varies by person but most toilets out in public are too short.

Naja, I agree with others, take items like those and donate them. If you can find a local nonprofit or shelter that has a specific need,do that, I have donated new in box items to Savers, to the Rotary Club for young couples arriving to a base for housing, and for raffles we had for the animal shelter where I volunteered. Basically, move them out before they settle in for another decade.

Having not been in a ladies restroom for awhile……well when I was young I guess my mother took into the ladies….i can’t say I’ve noticed. 😬 As for our house we have 3 1/2 bathrooms. The master bathroom and the powder room all have the taller toilets done during renovations. The two upstairs still have the lower toilets. It’s not like the ones upstairs get used all that much. If we were to remodel upstairs we’d go with the taller ones.

As a tall person, I've noticed my whole life! And my bf's house has low toilets and they're round, not oblong. And the top of the tank is not straight. It's some odd shape so you can't put anything on them without worrying it will fall off. It's so stupid. My favorite thing in the new master bathroom and I so adore it, is the bathroom vanity. I found an extra tall one. It comes up to almost my hips. I don't need to bend way over when brushing my teeth or washing my hands, etc. I now notice at other people's houses how low their vanities are. And when the builder was putting in the new sink and counter in the new laundry room, I made him build something to put it on so it would be higher and more comfortable for me. I grew up and lived in a house that was over 100 years old. People were really short back then. It killed my back washing dishes or cooking at the counter. No wonder I have lousy posture. I love my laundry room sink. It's relaxing. Especially compared to the kitchen sink. It's at the regular height of most houses, I can live with that, but it has an extra deep sink so I have to once again bend way down to wash dishes. OK, enough of a rant and back to putting my pantry back in order.

In the condo we are renting, the bathroom countertop is so low I sit down on it to use the mirror to check the back of my hair. The countertop is about 8" below my crotch. When I stand up in front of the mirror, the top of the mirror over the vanity is about even with my chin. Like Grooch, I am quite tall, and all of my height is in my legs. Not to get too graphic, but when I have to use a really low toilet, my knees are about level with my chin. Try getting up from that position, especially in a small stall! It ain't pretty when one is over 75 with two artificial knees (which do work very well, thank goodness).

My new toilets are all tall and oblong. As those who have me me know, I am definitely short, though I am short waisted so my BBlegs ate longer. I had a four inch riser on one of NY old toilets which was a bit tall, but the same riser in my rental bathroom was ok since the toilets there were way too low. I measured toilets everywhere I went and only one toilet at a senior center where I attended a conference was perfect. My friend Lorna is tall with long legs and hers was a bit too tall. Anyway the ideal height might not have been in our budget but what I got is working out. If you go look at toilets for sale you can't sit on one, which is probably wise on their part. But it really makes a difference. She my tibia was still fractured, I was lucky that my downstairs powder room which is not large has the toilet facing the sink and I could use upper body strength to use the sink to help get up. I will have to look at counters. Mine are all ok for me but some things on walls were hung too high for me, like a cabinet I bought when I moved here in 1997. My friend Daphne hung that and it was perfect. The contractors re hung it too high, making the top shelf useless. I had my handyman re-hang it. I know a couple of men who are 6 ft 7 inches... Think of them!

We changed all the toilets in our house to tall toilets. I wish all or certainly most public toilet stalls had tall seats and grab bars on either side.

Late to the conversation, but when a toilet is too tall, and your feet do not touch the ground, it can be a problem. Also, public toilets need to be usable by kids.

Yes that is obvious, if a toilet is too tall you add a step stool for the feet.. Children that small usually have a parent helping in public toilets or at home. And toilets are often too short in handicap stalls and senior centers and nursing homes and that makes it really difficult for many seniors. It is a legitimate problem. I am short and we have large numbers of shorter seniors in our large Asian and Latino populations here and many with arthritis and or joint replacements. Fall prevention is crucial in seniors as a fall is all too often the beginning of the end for people. I noticed more in 2021 when I had the tibial plateau fracture that took months to mend. I was mostly at home that year and modified one toilet, but then heard from my older friends how they were affected. My three new toilets at home are a great height,

My understanding is the reason toilets are low is that position is better for bowel movements. If you have a higher toilet and/or shorter legs, you may want to consider using a foot rest.

Jimmer, we older women have trouble standing up from sitting on the toilet seat if our knees are angled higher than our upper legs. Legs weaken as we age, I have one of those foot stools to put my feet on.at home

Foot stool is good while sitting but not so much for getting up. I had trouble while dealing with the broken leg for months. Riser made it a bit too high, used books as a stool but for standing up better to have the ability to, as dogdoc said, to have the knees lower.

My knees have been higher than my upper legs all my adult life, so I have always had to have good leg muscles apparently, but never thought anything about it. (my legs are 36" long) At my last annual Medicare wellness visit, the doctor asked if I could get up out of a chair with no hands, and I said sure, then demonstrated, and ack!!! I did it, but it was difficult. And then I started contemplating levers and fulcrums and realized the backs of my knees are several inches above the seat of most regular chairs, but I most often sit in an adjustable office chair with the chair raised to maximum height. So I (even at my advanced age) bounce up and down out of that thing, no hands, all day long. So I am now practicing getting up and down out of regular height chairs to be ready for my next wellness visit.* Pro tip for you 60-ish kids. Start practicing chairs now. Especially you long-legged ones. Old age ain't for sissies. *also contemplating taking a 3" deep chair cushion to the visit to demonstrate some physics. (I am not going out quietly)

Yes, if a taller chair helps, so does a taller toilet ( but toilets are more expensive) In my balance and mobility class we do sit and stands.. For a reason.
