In the UK, it comes after Season 3, and I guess they'll show it some time in December. Yes, I'd watch it whenever they'd show it.

I saw season 3, and if you've remained spoiler-free you have to trust me, you do NOT want to watch the Christmas special out of order, it would reveal something you really won't want to know.

If you haven't remained spoiler-free, I think the special is meant to be a kind of stand-alone episode, so it wouldn't matter.

I read a blurb in People magazine saying to not go to sites and read spoilers for season 3. So after an hour of internal struggle while puttering around... I went and looked! Shame on me!! BE STRONG those that are spoiler free!
I am weak.

Kitt, I'm jealous. I want to watch it now!! I'm like a little kid peeking at Christmas gifts.

Last weekend I had a marathon of season 2 from iTunes. Couldn't wait, literally, for Season 3 to air on PBS so I made a donation during the "Downton Abby revisited" program and will receive my DVD of Season 3 in Jan. - Happy Birthday (Dec) & Merry Christmas to me!!!! Patience has never been my strong suit.

If you are watching Season 2, I recommend not watching that Christmas episode (#8) out of order. Too much of it relies on prior episodes and it would be a spoiler.

IIRC, they showed the last special after season 2. (It was the episode when Lady Mary got engaged). I would expect the US would do something similar this time but we shall see.

The Sundance channel is running the following miniseries, starring Michelle Dockery of DA...

Restless -- Part 1 of 2. In 1976, a daughter learns that her mother was a World War II British spy who's been on the run for more than 30 years and is ready to come in out of the cold.

Check your local times. Part one airs tonight at 9pm PST. I'm sure they will air it multiple times.

Just a little personal warning about that spoiler.
I've been watching Season 3 online (using TunnelBear) and read that spoiler (not from Mame's link -- on an entertainment web site) just before watching the Christmas show. It nearly ruined the show for me. I wish that I hadn't read it.
