I like to think of myself that way,but I guess I'm approaching the age where there are lots of more trusting people who do get scammed.. but I don't count myself among them so far.

I am very curious which act makes Howard upset next week. The advert makes it seem heart wrenching.

I'm a day late to this conversation, but I have to say, Piers was a DOG when it came to the pretty girls too!

One thing that made me like Piers was that he liked the chubby women :-) He was so sweet to the big girls.

Well, this is disappointing. The group I was looking forward to, The Edge (a group with roots in drum corps) didn't do too well. They in fact got set up to fail by the producers before they even got to perform live in NYC.

According to this Facebook post:

"In an attempt to launch our mission of bringing drum corps to the masses, we approached America’s Got Talent (AGT) and auditioned with great reviews from the producers in Charlotte. We were then scheduled to move onto New York City for a live recording in front of the celebrity judges.

We practiced a lot of hours, brought some of the best drum corps talent on the planet together and went to NYC to bring it to America!

Well they didn't give us a chance at all. It felt like the Jerry Springer show really. We were set up to be the bad act they love to humiliate for ratings. The producers of the show actually prepped the audience on how to “boo” just prior to the Edge taking the stage. In addition, the “boos” were piped through the sound systems facing the audience to initiate them to slam the group.

That is all we can say at this time but I wanted you all to know in case you see it on television. Stern and his fans in the audience didn't like us at all. Sterns negativity toward bands, drum corps, and the marching arts in general was certainly present."

That really pisses me off. Like someone mentioned on Drum Corps Planet (a drum corps message board I visit), it's one thing if an act fails, but when they're set up to fail by the producers before they even get a chance to perform, that's a whole 'nother story. Just cause they may not have been your cup of tea doesn't mean they didn't work and rehearse long hours to do their best.

Who, that just stinks! Sorry your beloved drum corps got treated so shabbily. :-(

Thanks Mame. Though they're not exactly my beloved drum corps, just a group I'd heard about that had roots in drum corps. I likely don't know anybody in the group.

It just makes me mad cause there are some obvious acts out there that are bad for the sake of being bad, just to get on TV. But this is not one of those groups. They really worked hard for it. Now, I haven't seen them perform, so it could be they might have been not exactly stellar. I'll have to see for myself if/when they get on the air.

Kinda makes me wonder now if the other acts that are obviously bad for the sake of being bad to get on the air were really trying to be bad too.

It just really, really stinks that they were set up to fail by the producers. I mean, priming the audience on how to boo before the took the stage? And piping in booing sounds so as to get them to boo more? That is just so beyond wrong.

And I'm really sick of seeing all these advertisements that are all about Stern. What is this, the Howard Stern Show?

My DVR isn't conflicting this week (for the first time). Not sure I'm gonna even watch at all. It might get automatically deleted. I'm not even intrigued by any possible acts at this point. Just too bad a taste in my mouth.

I hate to admit it, but I'm really liking Howard Stern on this show. I am watching it this year!

I understand that there is a lot of unreality (LOL) involved in reality shows but coaching the audience to boo before they have even seen an act and then piping in fake booing to encourage negativity is over the line to me. I'd say this show is like a circus but that would be insulting to circuses.

I wonder if they also did that in previous years, or if that's new this year.

Oddly enough, I don't recall the audience booing in previous years unless the act was *truly* super awful. It doesn't sound like that could be remotely true of this marching band.

It doesn't really matter, since Stern was added, ratings have dropped substantially, in spite of all their hyped up promotion of him. It was a bad choice.

When I went to the finale of Big Brother the year Maggie and Ivette were final two, they were pretty aggressive in telling us not to boo, no matter what the outcome and that you could be removed from the audience.

People just cheered louder for most of the rest of that cast as they came out. They also had pre-made signs and had to work to get people to hold a pro-Maggie sign..

At other tapings I've attended, the audience is told when and how (fast) to clap.

Still, this sounds worse. I DID get the idea that certain acts were targetted with negative treatment, which is really too bad.

It's reprehensible. The more I think about it the angrier I get, and not just because it was directed towards a group I would support. As Jimmer says, it's over the line. Nobody, but nobody deserves that kind of treatment.

I'll likely watch the NYC stuff (fast forwarded) to see if The Edge even makes it to the air. Then I can see for myself if they were any good, or really that bad. Like Karuuna said, it's likely not true they were truly super awful.

After that, I am done for the season. I'm glad the ratings have dropped with Stern on it. Serves them, and him, right.

THIS article didn't pull any punches.

quote:

About 10.48 million people tuned in to watch Howard Stern’s debut on NBC’s competition series “America’s Got Talent" Monday night.

Last year, when the show debuted later in May, on a Tuesday, it had clocked 15.3 million viewers.

That’s about a 32 percent plunge.

<snip>

The moral of this story? Howard Stern is not, as NBC said at the start of the “Talent" episode, the King of All Media, and NBC made the mistake of buying into its own hype, making a serious misstep when it scheduled Stern’s “Talent" debut on Monday night.

Regarding the Drum Corp and the FB post....I'm going to withhold judgement until it's shown on TV. This is just their point of view. Doesn't sound right - that they would coach the audience to boo before a potentially good group comes on stage. If this is true, why didn't we see this information on previous years? Many groups & individuals going on AGT had FB pages before their episode aired.

I have no reason to believe that they would lie about the audience being coached to boo. I do reserve one last judgement on whether they are any good or not until I see for myself (as I've said). Maybe the producers did think they were truly bad. But if so, why let them go through to NYC just to humiliate them? That's still beyond wrong IMHO.

Oh, and FWIW, it's "corps" not corp. Just a pet peeve of mine. LOL. The worst is when I see fans/members post on Drum Corps Planet (a drum corps message board) and say corp. Erg! You'd think if they were fans (and especially members), they'd know the correct spelling. I'll give you a pass here, cause you don't follow the activity.

ETA: Kar, I wouldn't be surprised it was orchestrated by Stern. I could just see him reading who was up, and deciding he was going to really give the business to the "band geeks." On that FB page, one person said that on his radio show he often bashes singers like Frank Sinatra, Tony Benette, Barbarba Streiestand and Liza Mennellie. I guess if it isn't heavy metal, it isn't music to him.

They have absolutely put acts through for ridicule in the past but often they are somewhat deluded people, or older people, perhaps not as likely to belong to large online communities and perhaps not on facebook.. or maybe so embarrassed they said nothing later?

I had to rewind and watch that dog act a couple more times tonight. I loved it. But what was even better was watching how Sharon reacts during a dog act....LOL

Well, we caught a glimps of The Edge in the waiting area. Still a chance they'll be on tomorrow night. In the meantime, getting kicked in the nuts is considered a Great American Talent.

Getting kicked in the nuts is one of the throwaway acts - they are rewarded with a Vegas trip for entertaining the audience. We have these types every year. And those who make it to the audience voting are always gone the first round. They do this every year.

I thought the point of bringing on Howard was that there would be no "throwaway" acts, that only real talent would be allowed through?
