I'm not watching because of Steven Tyler. I am surprised some young and I mean young lady's father has not convinced him to have a change of attitude. I watched the first hour of the first show and that was it. Maybe I will change my mind, you never know.

I'm with you Lazylu. I can't stand Steven Tyler. I do not like his looks, which he does nothing to enhance. Nor do I like his "dirty old man" attitude towards some of the females on this show. He's just slimey and swarmy, in my book. Yuck!

We don't take his comments seriously. It's more important to me that he is not mean and nasty or belittling in other ways. It has always interested me how so many women are attracted to guys like Stephen Tyler and Mick Jagger. I can see the attraction but at the same time they certainly don't have classic good looks.

What, you don't think this is classic good looks, Jimmer? ;)

This is a little off subject but I just listened to Steve Tyler sing the national anthem at the New England/Ravens football game. He was totally AWEFUL and embarrassing. I really question his ability to judge other singers when he is soooooo BAD! Scary, scary, scary. I felt sorry for him making such a fool of himself.

I said the same thing to my husband. That was just terrible. To think he is judging people.

Is Simon Cowell a good singer?

I've never heard Simon Cowell sing so I can't answer that. However, he has a very good understanding of the whole industry and what works and what doesn't.

I think Steven Tyler sounded like Steven Tyler. No real surprises in this performance. I think he does okay belting out that stuff at his age. Did you see him with Joe Perry and Randy Jackson sing Chip Away the Stone on Leno this week? I haven't watched Idol for the last couple of seasons. I decided to give it a go this year and I am pleasantly surprised. I love the new judges because have been out there on the front lines and on the top of their games. I see a new positivety and respect for the contestants. It's not just about the voice. The contestants are usually already stage veterans no matter what their ages. That is just the way it is. If you want to be a singer you have to do the clubs and the county fairs and hone your craft. The days of having a nice voice are gone. That is what they mean when they say the whole package. The artist has developed to the point where the right guidance can take them to the top. They are not starting from square one. I've loved Aerosmith for years. And I like Jennifer Lopez... talk about the whole package... what doesn't that girl do? I previously admired Simon because he knew the industry and how to develop a talent and he was brutally honest. But the format got old with the really lousy delusional acts. And Paula still trying to be that cheerleader... they like me, they really like me. Anyway, I'm enjoying for now. Don't know if I will make it a whole season though.

If you want to see just how talented Steven Tyler is check out you tube. I am not sure how to post link here but if you type in Steven tyler Kennedy Center Honors Paul Mc Cartney once you get to you tube. Steven gives one of the best performances I have ever seen.

I've never missed an episode of American Idol, even when I was disappointed in the winner. Sometimes, I think my hubby and I got the winner voted in, lol. Love Steven! The judging shakeup was probably a good thing. Btw, extra eppy tonight after the football game.

Punkinsmom... You are correct about that Kennedy Center Honor performance. And I saw nothing wrong with the anthem either.

I haven't watched the audition episodes yet. Hopefully I will know when it is Hollywood week and will get invested during those rounds. Let me know who we want to get through!

I haven't watched Idol in 3 or 4 seasons. I thought I would watch last night. The chemistry between the three judges is good. If anything Ryan asking the girl in the bikini to walk up and down the stairs was more slobbery than anything I noticed Steven do (although I did ff thru a bit). From what I saw/heard Jane Carrey only got through because of who her dad is.

I thought Jane Carrey sounded good, especially compared to some others they let thru. The bikini girl was just dumb.

I didn't take this off my season pass because the next episode is going to be in Galveston. I will watch it for the scenery if nothing else!

Haven't seen tonight's episode yet, but before tonight I thought they haven't been as bad. On an interview this week J.Lo said they don't hear the sob stories before they sing, but I find it a little hard to believe there isn't some note on the resume thing they have on them. J.Lo particularly often asks questions that are too spot on to be just coincidence.

I haven't watched this in years, but am watching tonight because they are in Portland. What I find interesting is that they are showing the auditions from two different places. Looks like they must have screened them at the Rose Garden/Convention Center, but they sang in front of Randy, JLo and Steven at another place in another part of town. Interesting. Is that how they usually do it? The kid they just had on that they did the bit about him having a baby face. When they first showed him he was at the Convention Center dancing around, but the panel is at the Red Lion (I think) on the Columbia River. It is actually Vancouver, WA in the background.

Jewels - I was seeing exactly the same thing. They were singing at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion about 5 miles from downtown. It was weird because they would be wearing exactly the same clothes no matter what location they were at!

Glad I saw that right, Kooklie! I did notice that some people had changed...the last girl, whose boyfriend had the stroke, had changed outfits. And she was originally at the RG, but some were at the Conv. Ctr. I know they were here multiple days...maybe the Jantzen Beach one was a different day. I was also surprised with how many people were not even from this area at all. NY? Philly? I do have a friend whose cousin made it to Hollywood, she lives local here, but they didn't even show her at all tonight. It was kind of like when Amazaing Race was here and they showed everything out of order. Editing is amazing.

Jewels, last year AI auditioned in New Orleans and a friend of mine auditioned. He said the original try-out was at the Superdome, but then the audition in front of the judges was at a hotel about one mile away from the Dome.

Just an FYI: These Hollywood weeks and Vegas week are still considered the audition eps. We are out of the audition eps when we get to the first voting week. I hope this doesn't sound heartless, but I was so relieved they didn't let the "fainting girl" through tonight. I really wasn't looking forward to more eps focused on her being ill.

Also as an FYI, the original auditions and the auditions in front of the judges are also not even the same week. I think San Diego's auditions were in July and the second round was in October. And, if I remember correctly, the first round of auditions was at Petco Park but the second round was on the USS Midway. As to the contestants wearing the same clothes, I'm pretty sure if they get the call backs they are asked to wear the same clothes. Odds are high a photo is taken of them after they get put thru to the second round.
