I completely skipped AGT, Sing-off, X factor, and all of The Voice except the blind auditions, just so I wouldn't be burnt out by the time AI got here. So I'm rearing to go.

We still watch more of American Idol than any of the other talent shows and AFAIK American Idol is the only American singing show to produce artists that have gone onto long-term success in the business.

I just hope that the judging panel is better this season. I think it will be better for a few reasons. They have much better personalities, they are more compatible and there are only three judges this year (I think four is too many and never worked).

3 is better than 4, absolutely.

Not a JLo fan but like Keith and hope this year he's allowed to just worry about his own mouth.. and I like Harry.

Randy in the place of Jimmy is NOT a good thing, IMO.

I still watch but with lots of fast forwarding because the shows are so bloated with other than singing by the contestants and judging.

It seems like (from the trailers) they are pushing the "harmony" factor with the judges, and if that's true it will be a welcome relief from more recent seasons. They seemed to forget the show is about the contestants, not the judges.

I wonder why AI contestants are the only ones who make it big in the real world. Contestants on other shows have definitely been as talented (often more).

Well there have been many more years of AI seasons and contestants.. many of whom are long forgotten.. And early on, it was the only game in town.

This is the first year I haven't payed any attention to pre-show hype until this late, so I think I am in for a surprise.

I didn't look at the actual names, but for sure the list of the top 31 is already out there!

16 boys, 15 girls. Check MJs if you want to know the names. I'm not going to looks at the names so I can have fun during the audition eps.

Frig, I decided I have to look at the names on the spoiler list because someone I know in my RL says they know one of the top 31, so I have to look.

Even though I quit watching the show several years ago, I thought y'all would like to see this. No one even comes close to earning what Carrie Underwood has made.

You're welcome Lazylu. Even though it went without saying that Carrie Underwood was the most successful Idol, where some of the others ranked in earnings kind of surprised me.

That's an interesting list. I'm not very surprised about Carrie but some of the others are quite amazing. Taylor Hicks in particular is doing much better than I thought he was. I'm not unhappy to see that of course as I always liked Taylor.

From that list:

Carrie Underwood $31M
Kelly Clarkson $7M
Phillip Phillips $3M
Adam Lambert $5M
Chris Daughtry $4M
Scotty McCreery $3M
Taylor Hicks $2.5M
Fantasia Barrino $1.5M
Kellie Pickler $1.5M
Katharine McPhee $1.5M
Jennifer Hudson $1M

I thought Jennifer Hudson would be doing better considering the movies she's been in. I was shocked at Phillip Phillips, I think I've only heard the one single, and although it did well I wouldn't have thought it would have brought him up to half of Kelly Clarkson levels. Is the list just for income in the year 2013 or for their combined earnings for all years?

I read a bit of it and it seems that it was just for the past year. For instance the second caption under Carrie Underwood says she has earned $83 million career-wide.

Glad to see that so many of my favorites (Adam Lambert, Phillip Phillips (last season I watched), Scotty and Taylor are doing well.

From the Forbes website...
Methodology

http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eeel45ehlfd/methodology-94/

We calculate our earnings estimates with the help of data from Pollstar Pro, the RIAA, Nielsen SoundScan as wells industry veterans, the musicians’ handlers and some of the artists themselves. These numbers reflect pretax earnings from June 2012 through June 2013.

Yeah, I was a little surprised about Taylor Hicks. Evidently, he is doing very well in Vegas. Who knew?

I'm thrilled for Kellie Pickler. She and her husband does so much for the USO and the troops.

I think Taylor Hicks is kind of a throwback to the Rat Pack days. Vegas seems tailor-made for him!

(Oh, I just read what I had typed and I honestly did not mean that pun!)

Roxip, I agree that is why his shows are doing so well in Vegas. I had no clue he was performing there (but I haven't been to Vegas in years). I didn't know if he had much a recording career, but evidently he doesn't need one.

Taylor played at an Indian casino not too far from me last weekend.

Yep, Clay is not on the list because he did not work much this year, he apparently is running for congress from North Carolina. Busy studying I think ha ha , I did see him in his "vacation job at summer theater, they are not paid much.

Forbes does also not follow overseas work or regional theater, Diana DiGarmo has been touring with her husband, Ace. And LaToya is appearing on Broadway this year but has been touring regularly,
Taylor has negotiated himself quite a nice contract in Las Vegas. Kathrine's money is probably mostly from her TV show which has been cancelled now.
The thing about most people not being a success from Idol is misleading, now it was easier in the early years without competition because every magazine and show had them set up for appearances, this does not seem to be true with other shows and Idol had RCA behind them, I don't think Interscope has done as much for the newer idols.

To me, I find that the idols have decent careers even if they lose, with a few exceptions, even that guy from season 3 Matt, has worked himself into a sports job after years of men's hair club ads, slo Idol has helped him support himself and his family., The problem with the voice and X factor others is there is little after show promotion or albums without label involvement, although I hear some of the voice coaches have taken some people from the show on tour with them as opening acts which is good.

If you go back to the first year, Guarini and Gray appear in regional theater and broadway, one guy who's name escapes me manages the group on a large cruise ship and another is some kind of gay icon.
The next year you have Charles and Demato - going back to life with money, but Vanessa is making music in Canada, Kim Caldwell gets TV reality hosting gigs, Trenyce is coming back to the US after starring in the West End for the last few years, Josh is a middle level success in country music, Kim Locke has regular gigs, still trying to break through to the top level though, but does pretty good, Clay was doing OK, but wants to be in Politics and Ruben is coming out with a new album with David Foster and new promotion. All living good in entertainment.
Season 3 the top 2 have been covered, then Jasmine is a star in the Philippines and in some other Pacific/Asian countries, Jennifer Hudson does Ok, I read about someone else just signing a contract with a major label, I can't remember her name.
and so and so on.

But the people who won Nashville star some started well, but no one has maintained fame,. - Now realizing how many people are on song wonders n the music business, you can't expect everyone to top the charts, but getting to the level when you don't have to scramble, but can continue to make money in entertainment, is a good thing.

I just don't see that with the other shows, I think it is because of the way the contestants are show, they are not on for more than 10 weeks in a row, they are on then off then on again, and after the show, they don't have the media follow them, they follow the stars.

I think the way Idol managed it was by having the same people on week after week after week, so you could expect them being on and anticipate what they would sing.
wow, that was way too much opinion.

I think that's a good analysis. The inability of the other shows (The Voice, X Factor, etc.) to produce any ongoing successful stars has always puzzled me.

I am enjoying the show again. They are showing more good singers than the ones that can't sing and were comical in the past.

Though I don't care for her and technically she didn't win her season of Nashville Star, Miranda Lambert has done pretty well for herself . She's the only big success story I can think of that didn't come from Idol though.

I just looked at the spoiler list and I'm not seeing the name of one of the contestants who I thought was a shoe-in for the show...anybody else noting the omission?
