You know, there's plenty of Students trying to learn Spanish out there. While we've mingled the China Rush adventure here in our Australia Race thread, China Rush for this season is soon to be over. This Latino Race is just now beginning.
So I'm making a thread devoted to the Latino Race, hoping nobody objects, so I can keep plugging each weeks update to keep it together. Kids next year may find still it useful in building their language skills - the Race can never get outdated.

I am having trouble with the gals from Venezuela and one of the guys - Pablo? - as far as speedy speech goes! Hopefully I will get my ears tuned in quickley!!

My Mexican students said Venezuelans always talked fast and dropped endings - similar to Puerto Rican Spanish. I'm missing stuff all over the place, but it's still fun to watch.

How funny! For me it has always been the Cubanos who "eat their words," dropping endings and such. I can generally get most of what Ricons say!
Teach - would it be safe to assume that your Mexican students are in your English classes, not your Spanish ones?

Nope - they're in my Spanish 2 and Spanish 3 classes. Many of them speak it and understand it, but they don't read or write it very well. We work on grammar w/them while the other kids are doing both grammar and vocabulary. It's actually rare that one of my Spanish students is the "top" student in a Spanish class - just like most of my English speaking kids don't get A's in English class.

Actually - it's not unusual for me to BEG our bilingual kids to take those classes since they help ME w/my vocabulary, too!

Now that you recall it to my mind, a friend and I had a Mexican guide around the port at Brownsville, TX, who said that he could neither read nor write Spanish as he attended an all-English school.
My OWN very first time to read and/or write Spanish took place when I attended language school in Mexico several years ago. I could, of course, read signs in the barrios and menus, etc. but never a paragraph!

Back to say that I so admire your commitment to knowledge, Teach. Because I worked with exchange students for almost a decade, I know that HS language teachers here BAN native speakers from their foreign language classes apparently feeling threatened by the students knowing more than they do!
I sincerely applaud your desire to learn as well as to teach!

Thanks, so much. And I know exactly what you mean about teachers banning native speakers. My first 14 years of teaching I only taught a Spanish 1 class here and there, and the main Spanish teacher hated having bilingual kids in class. I guess I don't embarrass that easily, and while I worry about sounding stupid once in awhile, I figure I'll sound dumb less often by learning from the ones who REALLY know how to speak! LOL
