CNTM PreviewThursday, May 21 at 9:00 AM ET Sheri Block, CTV.ca Jay Manuel says the first episode of Canada's Next Top Model is jam packed with twists and turns that will spark plenty of drama amongst the 11 finalists, all while showcasing the country from coast to coast. "We highlight Canada in a very interesting way and I don't think any other show has done something like this. There's an interesting divide," hints CNTM's host and executive producer, over the phone from Los Angeles. Highlighting the diversity of Canada was very important to Manuel, who was born in Illinois but immigrated to Toronto when he was three-years-old. "I sat down with CTV, and I said since we are here in Canada, we really need to explore some Canadian issues and really show and highlight Canada in a way that really puts us on the map especially because this show doesn't just air in Canada, it airs in other countries." Now living in New York City, Manuel says he enjoyed coming back to Toronto to film the show. "My parents still live there so coming home is great … I've always been all over the world, I've traveled everywhere, I've had such amazing experiences and done all these crazy things and my parents aren't usually there so when I'm working on this show it's great because my mom comes down and she sits on set and it's fun." But the show doesn't just stay in Toronto. For the first time in CNTM's history, the finalists will be traveling internationally. "I feel that it was important for the girls to get a real taste of what it's like to be a part of the real modeling industry, especially since these girls have such incredible potential and they can all really be a part of this international scene," says Manuel. It's also a first for an international format of the franchise. "When people think of a lot of these Canadian franchises of American shows they think, 'Well this is actually going to be the boring sister to the American original' but that is not what I wanted this cycle of Canada's Next Top Model to be at all and it isn't." Manuel says viewers are also going to be impressed at the Canadian experts working in the industry who will be featured on the show. This includes CNTM's newest judge Mike Ruiz. Manuel has known the Montreal-born celebrity photographer for 11 years and the two actually live a block away from each other in Manhattan. Manuel says he called Ruiz up to go for coffee and told him how much he wanted him to be a judge on the show. "He's so extremely passionate about what he does and in that he's also extremely very articulate in kind of distilling down exactly what a model needs to hear to really help them move forward and elevate themselves and I knew Mike would be the perfect addition to this panel," says Manuel. Ruiz will be joining returning judges and fellow Canadians, supermodel Yasmin Warsame and "FashionTelevision's" Jeanne Beker. Manuel says the drama in the first episode is just the beginning. "These girls, we cast them so well that we even had a storyline this season that we've never even really fully explored and encountered on the American show so that gave us an opportunity to bring something new to the table there. It really is a strong season, fast paced, a lot going on, top to bottom. I think it's going to do really well."

I enjoyed the show tonight. I don't understand that one woman leaving. It is such a good opportunity and to just decide to throw it away seems a shame.

Hi Miz! yeah, Jill is from Vancouver, Maryam is from N. Van and the one that quit is from Penticton. Thought it was a good show. The 3 girls upstairs in their own room will be interesting. Braces??? wow, bad timing on that. And nice fall during elimination...how embarrassing I love Jay (way more than Tyra)

Hi Cinnamongirl! Thanks and I didn't know someone quit already!!! I missed that too! I'm re-taping it on one of the many repeat days. I enjoyed the critiquing better with Jay and his judges as it had more substance and he lets them talk more, including Nigel.

After the first week Tiffany did seem the one to go, this week was so much harder they were all so good. I love that this panel is so constructive and seems to be having a good time without going to the anitcs that ANTM seems to go to. (they should have gotten rid of Miss J over Paulina) Last week I was surprised to hear of Nigel's other career with documentaries as well as the Humane Society, I had not idea from watching ANTM that he did anything else other than fashion photog, but he seemed very impassioned re animals. All in all, two eps in I am impressed with these girls and what they have done, and I love Nole as the art director again this year. I wonder if Stacey will be back for runway?

I loved when Jay said he hated the word Fierce!! had to LOL at that one I really liked Linsays makeover the best..and Nikitas the worst.. Uuugh!! I hated her bangs...but it worked for her. She had the best photo. I like the show, the girls and the judges.. and of course, Jay. Should be a great season. And if you miss it on Tuesdays I think its repeated several times thru the week. Oh and yay, they go warm and tropical!!

I am really enjoying this series, it seems to be all about the models and helping them. I do wish that Nikita goes next, based on her attitude. Hope she shapes up. The two blonds, Meghan and Heather really had great pics. Miriam too. I love how supportive this photographer seem to along with Nole. I don't know what the whole deal was with the passport, I wonder if she is a citizen or perhaps was having some difficulty getting a passport if she is Iranian, not really sure how that works with citizenship and immigration status.

Yeah, seemed weird about the passport but I bet there was something we didn't get filled in on. I was happy to see her still get a photoshoot even though I probably wouldn't have been too thrilled if I were one of the other girls. Nikita sure has a bad attitude and a potty mouth to go with it...LOL I hope she can change that cuz she definately has the look. Nice to hear they are changing the one girls braces.. I knew Ebonie was going from her edit.. Sometimes they just give away too much. I Jay & the judges..

I'm a little late posting about it (as usual) but it was another good show this week. There doesn't seem to be the same level of controversy in the Canadian show as in America's Next Top Model. The judging panel seems so reasonable and Jay is solid. Maybe that's why we don't talk about it as much.

I am really enjoying this show! I totally agree with all the comments above. Jay and the judges are great and they seem to want to bring out the best in the models.

I too am really enjoying CNTM. Last episode Nikita was sure edited in a 'dark' manner. I was really not liking her at all, but she seemed to redeem herself a little near the end of the episode. Rebeccah sure lost it last episode. She needs some anxiety medication big time!! I don't really have a favourite to yet but I know I DON'T want Nikita to win. She can be final 2 but her attitude sucks to be CNTM.

It's a pity that Heather and Meaghan are so similar, because I don't think they could both go to the final, since they may want to see two different types of models. Nikita has a good chance although I think her nose is too large, maybe it's her haircut... which was the real bonus to her new look... I am still amazed at the perfection of some photos of the girls, when without all that makeup could be quite ordinary... Tara was doomed even before the photoshoot and they made sure she was gone with the lousiest makeup for the photoshoot... the girl from Edmonton will be next.. I mean, I live here and I see many more beautiful girls than Tara but she was the lucky one to have been chosen... Her eyes are too small and her nose too long and don't see why she wouldn't be the next to go...

If you have any fashion channels, I'm sure they'll air the Canadian version of the show (I saw USA, Britain and Australian versions on Canadian tv). Digital channels only, I guess. So surprised to see Meaghan as not the best in the cover girl photoshoot and her walk needs some work. I expected her to be in the finals but I'm not sure now. Also surprised to see the Edmonton girl, Linsay doing so well on the cover girl shoot, however, her face without all the makeup is too ordinary. Nikita's hairdo for the photoshoot was not good, but she has that extra-something that the others don't have. I'd like to see Meaghan and Nikita on the final runway but can't decide who should win.

Still watching last weeks episode with Ms. J and I'm surprised how much they're picking on Maryam. Really bugs me. I hope Lindsay wins this.

Me too Miz. I'm hoping for a Linsay win. I felt really bad for Maryam. I know shes different than the other girls because of her background but didn't deserve the slams the other girls gave her. She seemed to be the first to hug or grab a hand for comfort. Seemed genuinely nice.. I expected Nikita to be that way but was surprised to see Meaghan joining it. I hope they watch now and cringe and feel badly for what they said behind her back. I feel bad Maryam is watching and seeing it. Has to hurt. Was sorry to see her go, she really had an awesome picture this week, they all did. It will be a tough choice between the 3 remaining.

I haven't been watching regularly, I just tend to see it when I channel surf. BUT I am curious... what is Maryam's story? Why is she 'different'? What the deal with her 'background'.

Hi Mame!! Shes only been in Canada for 2 years, from Iran. I think thats part of her passport problems too. She isn't as polished on her English (although shes pretty damn good!!) and in Iran women are always covered, so I think its hard for her to walk around in skimpy sexy clothes.. She just wasn't as comfortable with all the highschool girl stuff going on. Seemed a little lost... But she rocked a lot of pictures. I think she;ll get jobs in some way in the modeling world

Hi Mame-B, Maryam's first language isn't English, not sure what language she speaks or what country she came from but she did mention last episode that in her country the women are all covered up, so I'm assuming a country with a lot of Muslim's? Anyone who knows, please jump in. The other girls started getting catty with her because the judges let her stay in the competition not once but twice when they had an out of country (Canada) photo shoot and she couldn't go because she didn't have a passport. However, the first one they set up a photo shoot in Canada so she would have a picture for the judges to critique and the second time they told her they couldn't give her that so she found an old photographer friend to take some pictures of her, she wanted this badly. Anyway, the other girls were jealous of her (The judges, well 2 at least really were routing for her.)and therefore insecure themselves and picking on her for nearly the past 3 episodes. Cinnamongirl, feel free to add anything I may have overlooked. lol

I knew as soon as they eliminated Nikita that Meaghan was the one to win. Actually I was surprised they kept Linsay instead of Nikita for the final 2. Who knows.. maybe it was necessary to eliminate Nikita if they wanted Meaghan to win, in the final review Nikita may have scored higher than Meaghan and so needed to be eliminated. I heard Nikita had lots of modeling before the show... so, she'll be doing some more in the future. In the end they went with the most obvious girl, blonde and cute... nothing original in that... oh well, she may have been the only option left.. "for the international" fashion arena... as the judges were saying.. I did enjoy they whole season, without the big hype of the American version... and Jay was pleasant enough as the host.

I too enjoyed the whole season. I found the judges actually gave them more tips/advice. They all looked tired of Nikita at the end when she was crying. THe one judge even said she was manipulating them. The music they would play when the girls would come in, it reminded me of the movie "Halloween". lol
