Goudie signs record deal
By Michael Rigler

REX GOUDIE

BURLINGTON – Rex Goudie has signed a record deal with Sony Music Canada.
Just two days after his celebrated homecoming, the 19-year-old Canadian Idol runner-up confirmed that rumours of the deal, which had been circulating for the past week, were indeed true.

"I'm so excited to get a chance to work with the people at Sony BMG," Goudie told The Western Star from his home in Burlington. "I want this album to show everyone what I can do — I’m going to do the best I can for my fans."

Goudie has also been booked for at least two live performances before his departure for Ontario late next week.

"Mile One Stadium asked me to sing Ode to Newfoundland before the Fog Devils' first game," Goudie said. "I’m so excited to be a part of that — hopefully they’ll let me hang around to watch the game."

Goudie's first live appearance — apart from the impromptu performance he gave standing in the back of his father’s pickup truck at the Deer Lake airport Tuesday —is scheduled for this weekend.

Goudie will also take to the stage at the Trinity-Conception Fall Fair in Harbour Grace. Before the concert, Goudie will be at the S.W. Moores Arena to sign some autographs.

According to the press release from the record company, Sony’s talent scouts realized Goudie’s potential immediately.

Sony BMG Canada president Lisa Zbitnew said the nonchalant attitude of the performer turned heads from his first performance on the T.V. talent show. The fact he narrowly lost to Calgary native Melissa O’Reilly didn’t concern the Sony executives at all.

"As soon as Rex hit the stage, it was clear he was a star," Zbitnew said "We are very excited to work with such a talented and charismatic vocalist on his debut album."

According to Zbitnew the "soul and emotion" in Goudie’s performances, along with his unassuming charm, created a huge, nation-wide fan base for the small-town singer across Canada.

He was hoping to have a little time to relax at home, but Rex will be leaving for Toronto next week to start work on his debut album.

The company is planning to release the record by mid-December, leaving the young singer just a few days before embarking on the next phase of his journey. Goudie wants to pen his own songs, and admits there’s a lot of hard work ahead.

However, he's no stranger to hard work and said he's focused on creating an album that is true to him and his musical influences.

He said he’s "thrilled" to have an opportunity to produce a record for his growing legion of fans.

"I know it’s going to be tough because I only have four weeks to get the songs down," Goudie said. "But I met so many great musicians and people in Toronto and I’m really looking forward to it. My influences are bands like Blue Rodeo and other classic rockers.

“I also want to get some of the Metallica sounds in there because they’re another big influence on me. Whatever I record, it’s going to be true to me and who I am."

Fans may be curious to know what does a 19-year-old from Baie Verte does with the money from his first record contract. Goudie said he’s looking around for a pickup truck to drive to Toronto and for carrying his snowmobile around this winter.

One thing’s for sure, Goudie will never stray too far from home.

"It’s so great to be back home for a bit," Goudie said. "Even feeling the fresh air when I got off the plane in Deer Lake felt fantastic.

"It was raining cats and dogs when I woke up this morning, but even the smell of the rain on the gravel road outside and the muddy water running down across the driveway made me feel good — there’s nothing like home."
