Actually War...that never occurred to me. Maybe Juju is rooting for old people in general, not just Teri and Ian. That makes much more sense.

I have not liked them from the beginning. The way Ian treats his wife and especially the locals he is trying to get help from is disgraceful. IMO he is the "ugliest American" he have seen in three seasons of TAR. The way he constantly shouted "you numbah one" to the Vietnamese locals was so condescending. He is a very unpleasant person. Teri is no prize either. I would prefer anyone, even Flo, to win instead of them.

I suspect the reason that we saw a less agitated Ian in this ep is because of his familiarity with Saigon city, and further, that this familiarity was exclusive among the racers.

I'd also like to point out that the American war against Vietnam was the result of the US having put the Communist government in place and then coming to the "rescue" of the country when the Communist government wouldn't do as the Americans said. It was a terrorist war that should never have happened and as such, I am sure most people but those directly impacted by its horror would be loathe to talk about and likely know little about it.

I also didn't see anyone walking through Western Europe commenting on the American troop's presence there 60 years ago.

I think what I react to is the papable ANGER and tension that seems to envelop Teri and Ian like a miasma at all times. It is a big turn off for me.

I've seen other posters talking about knowing couples who snipe at each other like T&I do. I don't think I'd be comfortable being around that all the time, but I can accept that that sort of relationship works for some people. But it's not just what T&I say, it's the way they say it. I find it inconceivable that they are anything but miserable people, at least in times when the going gets remotely tough.

If they didn't get on my nerves so much, I would feel sorry for them.

Another thought - and for those who are more patient and diligent than me- mea culpa - - but I did take a cursory look at postings going back to November - could't recall who but I do recall a post made after the teams were able to make a call home - and it struck me that the post was pretty unflattering about Terri and Ian's kids or at least their reaction to the call - it struck me as odd at the time - but as not being one of their fans at the time - I just sort of let it pass . But my impression was the exact opposite - my impression was that these kids seemed to be really nice, and genuinely concerned about their parents - And believe me - I'm 54 years old with alot of life experience - it is very unusual these days to get a feel for parents by their kids, but when you do see decent kids these days - it does say something about their upbringing and good results are more often than not a balance between discipline and genuine love

Echoing the "Yay Old People!" :)

I'd like to see Teri and Ian make at least second, as long as "Oh Brother" is first. Flo does not deserve a win!!

I think Ian is a Saint compared to the ugliest american of all...Wil!

He was horrible!
While Ian may say "come on come on Fast Fast!" to cabbies, Wil and Tara were just plain RUDE!

Teri and Ian's attempt to cast themselves as the "Old People" underdogs is not a reason for me to root for them. That's just spin, pure and simple.

Ken and Gerard are no spring chickens, either, and their family has kids that aren't too much younger than Teri and Ian's. I'm rooting for those Old Folks instead.

I don't think Teri and Ian cast themselves as old as much as the younger teams talk about them that way. I wanted to slap Flo for her comment when she discovered T/I were actually ahead of her that she got beat out by people "old enough to be her grandparents."

Excuse me?? I don't THINK so! T/I are about the ages of my husband and I, and our son is 16, about the age of one of their children. There has seemed to be a bias against the old folks from many of the young people from the beginning. Ken and Gerard were also on the receiving end of this ostracization--and they teamed up with another ostracized team, the twins (presumably ostracized because they're so good looking.)

The shallowness of the young teams turned me off more than Ian and Teri sniping at each other.

It's true that the other teams don't seem to like them. But I don't think there's a bias against them because they are old. I think there's a bias against them because of their wonderful personalities.

Teri and Ian have gone out of their way to remind viewers over and over again that they are the "old folks". Frankly, they're really not that old. But they sure look much older than they really are (I would have put them near 60) and they certainly act every bit like the crotchedy grandparents.

I kinda think Teri and Ian, at their age (and I'm older) might have learned to BE more mature than the younger teams.. some couples just go in for public bickering and I mostly avoid those couples. Teri and Ian chose to go REALLY public and have bickered there way round the world..

Sad. And yes, they've mentioned age way more than the others.

Palm City couple moves into first place on Amazing Race'
TELEVISION

By Bob Betcher Media Columnist
December 13, 2002

After a series of colorful races and contests in Vietnam on Wednesday night's "Amazing Race 3," Palm City couple Ian and Teri Pollack wound up in first place on the CBS reality series.

The Vietnam setting likely played to Ian Pollack's favor since he was stationed in that country decades ago during the Vietnam War.

Derek and Drew, who are twins and models, were eliminated after they missed a key part of the race and had to backtrack.

Three teams remain; the finale is set to air in two-hour form at 9 p.m. Wednesday. The winning couple will take home $1 million.

The Pollacks aren't talking yet. They must remain mum per their deal with CBS.

Guinevere, thanks for teaching me a new word. Miasma. Have never heard it before. I looked it up. For anyone who wants to know: 1. a poisonous atmosphere once believed to rise from swamps and putrid matter and cause disease 2., 3. a harmful influence or atmosphere.

By the way, I was born in San Francisco and moved (late in life to Kansas). My heart is still in San Francisco. I was there last month and didn't feel one of those east bay earthquakes. Phooey.

Hey Cynthia and Tabby, I was born and raised in the Eastbay of SF until 4 years ago. I'm not real fond of the Earthquakes there, lol. In the midwest now, just have to look out for a tornado watch once in awhile.

I liked your post, Wiseoldowl. We're the same age and I too thought Teri & Ian's children seemed nice and well brought up. However, Ian didn't seem real loving on the phone. Maybe that's his public persona, I don't know. Their constant bickering gets on my nerves too. I do feel they are doing well for 'older than 20' folks, but they don't need to keep mentioning they are older. I've missed their exact age. I'll have to check their bios.

I agree they are not disliked by the other teams because of their age, but rather their attitudes.

Everything bad about Ian and Terry seems to have already been said, so I am going to add a few more positives to this thread about them with this post. But, believe me, I do see the faults.

1. I first started respecting them, when I saw how their children loved them. Any parent whose children look upon them with love in their eyes is definitely doing something right.

2. Tonight's show was to me one of the most healing episodes for US and Veit Nam relations in tv history since the tragic Veitnam war. Ian and Terry's brief words of peace and forgiveness and recognition of the beauty of the people and the land was the stuff that heals wounds.

There's still 40 minutes to go the final, and it's not looking good for them, but things can change in a New York minute.

I hate to point out that children often love their parents even when they are horribly abusive.. but not saying that is the case here..

Props to them for running a good race. They are the only racers that were not in last place in any leg of this race. Flo/Zach was last in Vietnam and Switzerland but it was non-elimination. KennyG was last to arrive at the finish line. Congrats Terian! It would have been better if they won.

Ian was a ••••••• due to the editing during the first episodes of the show. Teri was no peach either. But they have become humans in my eyes, and pretty good ones in the last few episodes. Teri and Ian relate to each other in a different way than most couples. They're confrontational and obnoxious, but that works for them. I actually felt good feelings for the old couple in the 2 hour season finale. I'm glad an older couple made it as far as they did. And I'm sorry a whiney ass like Flo gets $500,000...although Zach earned every penny of his half and more...

Palm City couple places second in 'Amazing Race'
By Bob Betcher staff writer
December 18, 2002

Following a series of frantic foot races and cab rides within eye shot of the Space Needle in downtown Seattle, Palm City residents Ian and Teri Pollack Wednesday night clinched second place on the CBS reality series "Amazing Race 3."

"We went the distance and were pound of that, Ian Pollack said at the conclusion of the broadcast. Although I was pretty tough on Teri from time to time, weve accepted each other for what we are and nothing will ever change that."

First place was snapped up by friends "Flo and Zach", who walked away with shows prize of $1 million, while third place went to brothers "Ken and Gerard."

The global journey took the Pollacks on a 41,000-mile trip around the world all the while trying to stay ahead of the other contestants as they battled wits and the elements and participated in stunts such as pedaling a bicycle overloaded with baskets, plunging into a waterfall, and utilizing planes, trains and automobiles to advance to the next city.

The Pollacks flew to New York City Wednesday to participate in a series of media events, including a scheduled appearance this morning on the CBS "Early Show," which airs from 7 to 9 a.m. on WPEC Channel 12.

They are scheduled to return to Florida tonight.

The Pollacks watched the show Wednesday night at a festive network party in a Manhattan restaurant, according to Beth Feldman, a CBS press representative said.

During numerous occasions in the series, Ian snapped at his wife, often while she was following behind huffing and puffing during competition.

On Wednesday nights show, Ian admitted he can be difficult. Im a little overbearing at times, he said, but he affirmed his affection for his wife.

"Shes my buddy, shes my best friend, my lover, shes everything in the world Ive ever wanted. Shes the love of my life."

Said Teri: "I love my husband. Sharing this experience with him has been great."

In last weeks episode, the Pollacks placed first during endurance races in Vietnam. The locale played to Ians favor because he was stationed in that country during the Vietnam war.

The couple was not available for comment; all contestants have been prohibited from talking with the press until today per their pact with CBS.

Ratings for "Amazing Race 3" have been so-so. Last weeks episode placed 57th out 135 primetime network shows. About 5.7 million viewers tuned in nationally, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The Pollacks were among 12 couples from across the country who were selected earlier this year to appear as contestants on the third edition of the CBS reality series.

Ian Pollack, 50, is a retired police commander and private investigator, and his wife Teri is a 49-year-old homemaker. They were the oldest couple in the third edition of the series.

As for competing with all younger players, Ian said they "totally underestimated us."

The series began weekly airings on Oct. 2, but was taped months in advance.

The Pollacks, who have been married for more than 22 years, returned to Palm City several weeks ago and kept a low profile in the community before they traveled to New York this week.

The series dispatched the dozen teams each comprised of two people who have a pre-existing relationship with one another on a trek around the world for 30 days.

The series began in the Everglades near Miami and wrapped up Wednesday night in Seattle.

Stops in between included Mexico City, Cancun, North Africa, Switzerland, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan, and Hawaii.

Only after their tasks were completed did they learn their next destination. Couples who were farthest behind were eventually eliminated.

The Pollacks have two sons, ages 10 and 16. Ian has an additional son, 24.

On Monday, they are scheduled to participate in a live chat from noon to 1 p.m. Monday on TC.Palm.com, which will originate from The Stuart News newsroom.

Calling their second-place finish Wednesday night in CBS' The Amazing Race "a plus for middle-aged America," Palm City residents Ian and Teri Pollack were enjoying their brief celebrity in New York City the next morning, where they made the rounds of TV and radio shows.

"It's been a ball," said Ian Pollack, a 50-year-old private investigator. "Everywhere we go, we're recognized. We're enjoying that."

Pollack and his wife, 49, were the oldest to compete against 11 other teams of two for a $1 million prize in a race that spanned 28 days and covered 41,000 miles and four continents, including North America, Africa, Europe and Asia.

They won two cruises, digital cameras and an undisclosed amount of money.

"Our contract prohibits us from talking about the amount," said Teri.

The race began in Miami with contestants walking, biking, hopping planes, trains and cabs and toting 30-pound backpacks to each destination. In the 12th and final episode, the Pollacks went from Vietnam to Hawaii -- where they jumped 160 feet into water -- to the finish line in Seattle.

The Pollacks said every leg was tough, but the first, to Mexico City, was hardest.

"There was the stress of not wanting to be eliminated in the first round," Ian said.

The couple took a lot of ribbing from younger contestants, including the 23-year-old winners, Zach and his partner, Flo, who was so tired and frustrated she threatened to quit several times during the last leg.

"I think our age was actually an advantage because some of the teams discounted us," said Ian. "They thought we would be out early."

Ian also got flak for being bossy and brusque with his wife of more than 20 years.

"We challenge each other all the time," he said. "I don't think that's dysfunctional. I think that's one reason our marriage has lasted."

Now that they can talk about the reality show, the Pollacks said they will celebrate quietly with family and friends.

Besides putting gas in a diesel truck in one episode, the Pollacks say their only regret is not coming in No. 1. But they had fun anyway.

"We thought it would be a hoot and a blast," Teri said, "and it was."

Local 'Race' pair describe experiences
By Bob Betcher staff writer

December 20, 2002
Ian and Teri Pollack, fresh from placing second in the "The Amazing Race 3" reality show, said Thursday they look forward to returning to their Palm City home and expect their "15 minutes of fame" to fade quickly.

"Maybe it'll be 16 minutes, but I expect it won't go on much longer," Ian Pollack said from CBS headquarters in New York.

The couple were in Manhattan on a media blitz that included appearances on the "Early Show" on CBS, "The Caroline Rhea Show" at NBC Studios, and phone interviews to newspapers and radio stations in Florida.

On Wednesday night's "The Amazing Race" two-hour season finale on CBS, the Pollacks and two other teams completed a grueling 41,000-mile trip around the world that included scores of stunts and mental challenges.

They used a variety of transportation methods to advance to the next city. Their travels took them to the Everglades, Mexico, northern Africa, Europe, Asia, Hawaii and finally to Seattle.

The hardest part of the endurance race, the Pollacks agreed, was riding bicycles in Vietnam that were overloaded with shrimp baskets.

"We just couldn't keep them steady," said Ian Pollack. The couple eventually paid locals to help steady them while they pedaled.

The scene was one of the funniest in the series, with the Vietnamese laughing and helping the couple stay balanced.

Although the winning couple received $1 million, Ian Pollack said he and his wife also received a check something that wasn't announced on the air. "We did get a cash award for coming in second, but we can't say how much."

During earlier legs of the trek, they won two seven-day cruises one to Alaska, the other to Europe and two digital cameras.

The Pollacks missed winning Wednesday night by less than 10 minutes. The final phase of the race involved racing by foot and taxi through downtown Seattle.

Getting recognized

Weekly installments of "The Amazing Race 3" aired from Oct. 2 to Dec. 18, but the race itself was taped in August and early September.

After initially returning to Palm City, the Pollacks said it was "fun" to keep mum about the outcome something CBS demanded. But the duo was recognized around town as "Race" episodes played out on the air.

"I was sitting in the Sakura restaurant on U.S. 1 near Monterey Road and a lady came up, grabbed me, and gave me a kiss on the cheek," Ian Pollack said.

Added Teri: "And I was at Kay-Bee Toys at The Gardens mall and somebody came up to me and said, 'You're the lady from "The Amazing Race" show.' I was also recognized at Burdines at Treasure Coast Square."

What's next?

The couple, who have lived in Martin County for three years, appeared Thursday on the "Early Show," where Pollack admitted to anchor Harry Smith that he sometimes treated his wife harshly during the competition.

"I apologize from the bottom of my heart," he said.

Pollack said he hopes to parley his new-found fame by offering to volunteer with a local high school robotics team and to offer assistance to his temple.

"We never, ever thought of throwing in the towel," he said. "That's the message we have to the youth in America stay the course."

The Pollacks Ian is 50 and Teri is 49 were the oldest couple in the race.

As for the popularity of the season finale, the first hour of the show, which was carried by WPEC Channel 12, came in third place locally.

It was behind the first-place "The West Wing" on WPTV Channel 5 and second-place "Barbara Walters Special" on WPBF Channel 25, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Viewership picked up during the second hour after Walters went off the air, and the show moved into second place. First place went to "Law & Order" on Channel 5, while an "Extreme Makeover" special on Channel 25 placed third

Great chat. Sounds like they had a great time.

I find I dislike Ian and Teri a lot less now that I have Flo to despise 100%.

ok, so i'm a day late and a dollar short, but didn't see the original but am watching it on game show network for the 2nd time. i am just curious if terri and ian are still together after this aired and they saw themselves. i'd have divorced him as soon as i got home from the race, lol.
