I just heard on the view that David Cook's tears were because his brother was there. I was in the other room so didn't hear it all but it was something like his brother has brain cancer and it cost $8000 to fly him out to be in the audience? Anyone hear anything about this?

I was just googling it and found this article. It sure had me in tears when I just watched David perform again and saw his brother. How heartbreaking. Each brothers lives taking such different turns. My thoughts go out to the family.

OMG! Just saw the cost of the flight was $80,000 not $8,000!

The thing that I like about David C. is that no matter if the song is not the greatest, at least, you always get a performance from him. To me, he is the most interesting to watch perform.

Apparently, DC has AC on his guitar for his brother.

I respect the fact that he hasn't turned his brother's illness into a circus sideshow. They briefly showed his brother (I'm assuming it was his brother because it was a man cheering madly who looked like he had undergone chemotherapy. They stayed on him long enough to make a point but didn't identify him as far as I could see.

I'm sure having great success with his performance in front of his brother was the highlight of the whole competition for him.

I agree, Roxip. At least they didn't seem to capitalize on his brother's illness.

However, $80,000, sure hits me hard...especially when they just had a Idol fund raiser to help so many around the world who have so little. Very disproportionate amount for one family to get so much when the Idol contestants have worked so hard to help so many who have nothing.

It's not $80,000 cash though. A large part of that was probably the deemed value of the use of someone's learjet, which would probably have been sitting in a garage (or whatever they call plane garages) all day otherwise.

if it had been paid in cash, it would have cost $80K but most of it was raised via donations and in-kind donations.
this was all done by his hometown, not by AI.

The medical staff who accompanied him donated their services as well, I am sure the price quoted was what the cost would have been to have a medical jet, completely staffed fly someone from point A to point B. In any event, nothing wrong with being able to donate money to the poor and hungry as well as to donate a gift to a dying person, they do that all the time for children - granting them a wish.

I dont have a problem with it.

I don't have a problem with it either. There is no way to create some sort of competitive measure or value for good deeds or suffering. Anything that can be done is a good thing.

I don't have a problem with it either. I think it was a wonderful thing to do. And like someone said, it was probably the projected cost but people donated time and services etc. I'm really happy his brother got to go.

Yes, there are charitable groups that contract with private airplane owners to use their airplanes -- which otherwise are often sitting in a hanger -- for medical purposes (usually transporting sick people from one medical facility to home or back). The owner of the plane gets a significant tax break and the person being tranported gets a more comfortable ride than possible in a commercial plane (and sometimes it is impossible). It is a win-win for both parties. I am amazed still that there wasn't a fuss made of it on the show but I think I like David Cook better because it is obvious that he asked that nothing be said about it because, as we all know, American Idol would have NO problem with splashing it all over the place and making a big deal. (What info that did get out was probably thru a leak in their publicity department.)
