I first heard that version in Finding Forrester with Sean Connery. I also have it downloaded to my mp3 player. When Katherine McPhee made such a splash singing that song, I was one of the lone voices saying that I liked this arrangement so much better.

If I recall correctly, last year they didn't eliminate anyone on the Idol Gives Back show even though they opened up the voting lines the previous night. Do you really think someone's going to be kicked off tonight? I think it's a freebee for everyone.

I didn't think Syesha sang that song anywhere NEAR as well as Fantasia. Fantasia made me cry...it was such a powerful performance. Syesha, not so much. It was okay, but...just didn't do anything for me. And I just don't get why she doesn't play by the unspoken AI rules. You don't do Whitney, and you don't try and sing songs other Idols have had a "moment" with. I think she will go on Thursday because of it.

My favorite of the night was Jason Castro. I wanted to love David C. - he is my favorite - but I just...didn't.

I didn't like David A. as much as the judges did, and liked Brooke more. I agree with Simon that Carly was scary rather than inspiring. Not scary looking, but the singing was so angry somehow.

I'm over Kristi Lee Cook...I just don't care what she sings at this point, although I will begrudgingly agree that this was probably her best week.

Michael Johns was good, but not great, but still HOT!

I was not really impressed with any of them last night. This is not a show I will save on my DVR that is for sure. And I was really disappointed because inspirations songs night is a chance to sing some really powerful songs and none of them took a chance.

Think "The Impossible Dream"
or "You Lift Me Up,"
think the songs from the Walt Disney animated films of the last few years,
or some of the songs from the Olympics.
Or religious songs. It is the perfect night for them.

I just don't get how these people make their selections. Maybe they are just too young to remember all those great songs and don't have time to do the research. But there were months between the time they made their first audition and the time they got to Hollywood. What were they doing all that time?

As for as last night's show went, my favorites all let me down. They were in as Randy is so fond of saying, just OK, or as Simon says, pleasant, but you won't remember them in a few days.

I liked Syesha. What puzzles me is how they can't do something someone great did. Huh? All songs were sung by someone. but if they choose a great one sung by a great artist, they are compared to that artist.

If they choose a lessor known song, they are critized for singing something no one knows. And we all know it is harder to connect with an audience if they have never heard the song.

I also liked Christy. She just keeps getting better every week. I was sure she would have been gone by now, but she has had three great weeks in a row. I know there is no chance for her to win, but I hope she lasts long enough to ensure she will have a career. I think she could be a star. She has the voice, the looks, and if she ever gets comfortable enough to relax on stage she could be great.

David was good. It continues to surprise me how someone as young as he is, without years of formal training can be so in control of his voice.

These three were the only ones who did not bore me. I had to force myself to finish listening to everyone else's songs without fast forwarding.

Brook is really beginning to annoy me. I agree about her comments to the judges. And her puzzled look every time one of them makes a less than complementary comment reminds me of basketball players when they get called for a foul. The "what" look. And her performances are as Simon says, pleasant but forgettable.

Not one of Idol's shining moments and I have absolutely no idea who is going home. It is going to depend on who has the biggest fan base and who has built enough "credit" to overcome a so so performance.

Allietex, the entire title of last night's theme was "Inspirational-songs-that-we've-paid-for-the-rights-to-perform-on-TV-and-are-not-using-already-in-our-medley".

I didn't listen closely enough to Jason Castro and I thought I didn't like it much but you guys have convinced me to "resurrect" it on my Tivo and give it another listen. Especially since someone pointed out it was the song playing when Dr. Greene died. Aww. I agree that Jason is "indie cool," but I wish he seemed more alert.

I love Carly, in so many ways, but what is she wearing?! Are high-waisted pants coming back in style? Because they are not flattering. Why doesn't she dress "cooler," like I would imagine someone with tattoos would dress? Rockerish? She's driving me crazy with the clothes. But I love her.

I thought Syesha DID talk back a little. I don't get sincerity from her, I get sarcasm. She has a great voice but she is determined to sing these big songs...basically I agree with the judges on her so no need to repeat.

I did NOT like David Cook's song. It sounded all gospelly and I couldn't follow it. He is my favorite so I was "bitterly disappointed," as Len would say. I have never heard of Our Lady Peace and I am suspicious that they are one of those Jars of Clay type Christian rock bands.

Is David Archuletta an Anglophile? Has he only sung british and australian songs so far? I keep not recognizing them. Sounded good, though.

Is Kristy Lee Cook the only person who can pull off a glitter tank top like that? She looked terrific. I hate country music so I am not one to judge the song but I am so jealous of how she looks in a tank top and jeans!!

I don't think Fantasia has the talent, and I never thought she should have won AI. That is just my opinion, though. To me, she's gravely like Macy Gray, and I don't like her voice either.

That said, no one else made me go wow last night. I like Jason singing Iz's version. Almsot brought tears to my eyes, but I think it was more about the song and not the singing.

Here is the youtube of Iz's version, get a tissue: Somewhere Over The Rainbow

My bottom three were Syesha--I just don't like her for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, David C--actually thought he was the worst of the night, and Carly--who was one of my favorites from the beginning and now I just can't understand her song choices at all.

Top three would have been Kristy--I was not expecting to like her but she did a fantasic job, David A--he did sound nasal like and isn't in my top but I really liked him last night, and Jason was my favorite of the night!

I keep flip-flopping with this bunch, who I like and who I don't. I like Brooke but Simon is right, she has just been boring lately.

This year's "talent" just doesn't wow me like previous years.

I think a cool season would be to bring back all the top two idol contestants over the past seasons and have them compete for the Ultimate Idol.

Escapee, finally another person who was unimpressed with fantasia. I never understood the fantasia love. Although, when she sang Summertime, I thought that was one of the best perfromances of that song I had seen.

I do think this season has several good contestants, more so than in earlier seasons.

Lexie, remember his daughter jumping out of the limo and releasing the balloons into the air? OMG! ER hasn't been the same since. Heck I don't think I've watched in the last 4 years +.

Our Lady Peace is a rock band from Toronto. Not Christian rock at all.

I wasn't impressed with David Cook's performance either.

I started out as a David A fan, and, back about 3 or 4 weeks, changed and became a David C fan. That's where I am now.

I LOVE Fantasia (and also love Macy Gray), so I guess it's a matter of taste. But I like Syesha and I thought she did really well with it, despite what the judges said. I would not put her in the bottom 3, unless the public responds to what the judges said in this case.

I am not a fan of Jason's. Don't get it at all. His voice is rather puny, IMO. So, is it that everyone just thinks he's cute, or what?

I thought David Cook tried something a little daring. I found it rather fascinating, even if I couldn't say it was my favorite from him. That fits in with his whole persona. I think he's learned to keep his mouth shut but still thinks his choices are smarter than those perhaps recommended to him by judges' comments. For the most part, he's been right.

David A is good, just so young. Wonder if he had gotten the same 'eh' reaction from many if he, and all these contestants for that matter, were shielded from view--so only their voices would be judged.

Kristi has surprised me the most. I did not even think she could carry a tune at first. The last couple of performances have been really good, even if you're not a fan of country.

Carly, I think had no place to go but down. She started at such a high level that we notice every little falter. We're being very tough on a talented young woman. (Admittedly, she has lost her place for me, too.) Something about her is cold, IMO, and that affects me as a listener.

Brooke is uneven. Good days and very bad days. I disliked last night's performance intensely.

I missed Michael Johns, darn it. But the clip I heard sounded very strong. Wouldn't pick him as the winner of this whole thing, but probably #2.

Thanks Jhonise. I will have to check out the original version and see if it's better than it turned out on the show. I really hope he turns it around next week and ROCKS us.

Hobbs, after Mark Greene died on ER, I was done... D-U-N-N-N. But every time I hear Iz's version of that song, I associate it with ER.

Darrellh, there may be something to what you said, but it can't be all that because these contestants keep coming up with songs no one seems to have heard of. Have they been put on a pre-approved list or do the producers obtain the rights after they are picked. I have often wondered about how that works.

I suspect that many writers and performers and record labels just give a blanket approval for the use of any of their songs. Why wouldn't they? Great exposure. Couldn't buy that kind of publicity.
